it must be fiber so, or are they putting in loads of different cabs?

what colour are the cables they are putting in? what part of grange rath are they working in?

so is Grange Rath getting FTTH?

Not seen the color of the wires. Not the type of person to walk up to the guys digging everything up and ask. :P

They seemed to put in those green boxes at both entrances though and one at the end of the Boulevard (I think), and they've dug up channels at the top of Park Close and the Boulavard, as well as starting to dig up the green in front of the houses at the main entrance. They seem to be digging lines up from the boxes to houses (and not doing a great job filling them back in either :P).

yes one of my lines with vodafone was down for a few hours yesterday, and is acting a bit unstable overall.

its a little strange that my line would would be stable on eircom for years and then with a move to vodafone, suddenly become unstable..

Is this what all the work is for around the town lately? Have noticed a lot of Eircom workers around, particularly this past week.

DROGHEDA will be one of the first towns in Ireland to benefit when the next generation of high-speed broadband comes on stream in early 2013, Minister Fergus O'Dowd has confirmed.

Minister O'Dowd has confirmed that work is on schedule to roll out broadband speeds of up to 40 megabytes per second (Mbps) to homes and businesses in Drogheda.

'Drogheda is one of 27 communities around the country that have been earmarked for an Eircom fibre connection network,' he said. 'For consumers, for example, these speeds would enable you to watch high-definition television online, at perfect speed, despite any other machines also using the signal in your house. Eircom have informed me that the structural work on this network in Drogheda is proceeding on schedule and will be finished by December 2012.'

'Structural work' (whatever that is) finishing by Dec 2012 does not necessarily mean faster connections straight away, just a warning to not to get your hopes up.

Still no sign of any cabs in Five Oaks. There is one in Stameen but would they be big enough to do 2 estates? From what I can see it looks like Five Oaks is the only estate on the Dublin Road that doesn't have a can yet. Getting worried now that we'll be left in the broadband dark ages!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,434 ✭✭✭positron

Sky has started ringing around offering their broadband package - it's DSL based on LLU or whatever is the technical term, so essentially if you have BT/Vodafone broadband etc, you can have Sky broadband. The offer is pretty darn good as well (thread in Bargain Alerts). Basically it's uncapped 6 mbps connection for approximately 28 euro a month, 12 month contract, free local, national and international (wowza!!) calls etc.

Now I am wondering when Eircom's FTTC goes online in early 2013, would I benefit from the line quality / speed etc, or would it be something that Eircom would keep as exclusive to eircom broadband connections..??

Don't worry.....Deepforde and Grange Rath will be left in the dark ages, latest schedule shows them getting Fibre in December 14 (Phase 5)

there was meant to be a cabinet installed at Roschoill, but it has not happened, and work has not even begun.

Eircom will not finish the new cabs in Drogheda for 2012, and it will push in to 2013.

what a joke of a company.

Resurrecting this thread with a bit of broadband news...!!

I rang Sky and signed up for Sky Unlimited Broadband. Sky Anytime calls (free calls to Irish landline, UK, Spain etc) and Sky Unlimited broadband was €17.50 per month. They are sending out free modem etc too. Twelve months contract.

If you fancy this deal, check out the big thread on Bargain Alerts. Basically you have to be Sky customer (out of contract is fine too I think), should have a land line and you need to ring 0818719895 before Friday. That number expires on Friday.

    HTH!

Any mention of speeds ? Wondering will they at least offer the same as what we've got currently.

Have they a 3 strikes and you're out policy?
Only reason I'm still with poxy vodafone is they don't have that policy.

Based on the feedback on the thread on BA, it's usually faster than what people were getting up until then. In my particular case I can't get faster than 3 mbps, but that's an infrastructure limitation with eircom. Unfortunately, my sky contract says 'up to 3 mbps' as they could only get that speed when they tested the line, but otherwise I've heard them offering 15, 24 mbps etc (on the BA thread).

I hadn't thought of that, but now after some googling
    Sky
    We say: very fair

Fair Use: Here's an easy one: Sky broadband unlimited doesn't have a fair use policy and doesn't manage traffic.

Since they bought this policy in, we've haven't seen a single substantiated complaint about it.

Yep! Check out the thread in Bargain Alerts that I linked to earlier. Ring 0818719895 and have your sky account number, landline number and UAN number (from eircom/vodafone bill) handy. That number expires today or tomorrow, and the offer is not open to Non-sky customers. Sky will offer it to general public in March I think, but might be more expensive then.

The Sky Talk Anytime package has anytime free calls to Irish landlines, 20 other countries including UK, Spain and Australia & Canada. That's €7.50 a month.

The Sky Unlimited broadband is unlimited cap, and speed limit is just what your line can handle as far as people in Dublin Road area of Drogheda is concerned, and it's €10 per month. I think there is a €20 option if you have a really fast line, but I am not sure. They will send out new modem etc too, for free!

Over all it's €17.50, including line rental and all that jazz. Considering it's €40 per month with Vodafone + at least €20 on call charges per month... savings are real.

Just signed up for the unlimited broadband and free telephone calls package (hardly ever use the landline)
E10 per month for 12 months!
Between downloads & xbox live we're currently giving vodafone 80 or 90 quid a month!
Thanks for the heads up positron! :)

Anyone else on Eircom in Grange Rath notice their speeds drop over the last few days? I used to be able to load Youtube videos close to instantaneously, and now my net is going at a third the speed it used to, requiring videos to need a tonne of pre-load time :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,434 ✭✭✭positron

I am up and running with Sky as of this morning. I am getting 3.6 mbps on speedtest.net compared to Vodafones' 2.5 mbps all these years, using the same phone line etc, which is a pleasant surprise to say the least. Fingers crossed it gets even better when FTTC goes live.

PS: Looks like one of the neighbors have gone live with Sky this morning as well. If you are here, Hello!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,120 ✭✭✭furiousox

I got my sky router on Monday and my 'go live' date is today.
My vodafone connection is still working, do I need to wait until vodafone packs in or should I go ahead and hook up the sky router?

    CPL 593H

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,434 ✭✭✭positron

Nope. Sky line and broadband went active for me on 28th, but because Sky messed up with hub delivery I was using Vodafone right up until this morning - it never stopped working. I would say connect your hub and work away - as far as I can tell switch over is in the background and is totally transparent to us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,120 ✭✭✭furiousox

    Strange.
Surely my vodafone username and password would be de-activated as I'm no longer a vodafone customer.
Maybe Sky are piggy-backing on the vodafone network?

    CPL 593H

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,434 ✭✭✭positron

May be Vodafone has a large pile of accounts to deactivate, but is too busy trying to get whoever is still with them to sign further 12 months contracts before Sky goes public with their offering. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,120 ✭✭✭furiousox

Just hooked up the sky router and I'm up and running. :)
Getting the exact same performance as vodafone, 4.5mb down & 0.5mb up.
Now have unlimited downloads and I'm saving about 70-80 euro pm.
Early days but very happy so far!

I'm in Bryanstown Manor and have noticed speeds dropping over the last couple of weeks. For the last year it was pretty steady at 6Mbps, but right now I'm lucky to get 2Mbps. Sometimes it pops back up to 6Mb throughput though, and my DSL still syncs at 6Mb when I can only d/l at 2Mb.

Also, I've just noticed that my first hop to the Internet is Mullingar (159.134.155.13)! WTF!? No routers in Drogheda for Eircom??? Pings are at 100ms to it.

    :(
