I need a mobile for receiving calls only. It must be O2 or Vodafone and I'm looking for the cheapest way to get this. I have an old phone I can use if it would need to be a SIM only deal and I hope some one can point me in the right direction as I'm getting a bit confused with the offers out there.

    Nokia 1208, Tesco prepay, €14.99.

Cheapest you'll get unless you go billpay; plenty of free phones on billpay but on the flipside you'd be tied to a contract for 12 months.

I know you said it must be O2 or Vodafone (mind if I ask why?) but Tesco "piggy-back" on the O2 network so you'd have no issues with coverage at all!

The reason is that I'm on Vodafone and my GF is on O2 both with long contracts and we talk a lot.... We both have frees call to the same network so a second phone for one us seems to be a cheap option. We dont really need a new phone just a SIM maybe so I'm looking for the cheapest way to keep a phone connected to a network.

Get a prepay sim and stick it in your spare phone

Oh right, I get you now!

You can get free SIM's from O2 here https://sim1.o2online-media.ie/SimOrderDetail.aspx

And free SIM's from Vodafone here https://www.vodafone.ie/df/shop/review.jsp?handsetselected=22228&offerSelected=prepayporting&sim=true&action=buy

Not sure about Vodafone's terms but to keep the SIM active on O2 you have to top up every 6 months, even by just €5

Also, she might be able to get out of her long O2 contract if that's any help to you both!

Thats what i was thinking of, but do you not have to top up the credit to keep the phone live or will it work as long as there's credit on it.

If I top up today, the account will remain active for six months. O2 will suspend an account once six months pass from the last top up.

This might help; copied and pasted from O2.ie
Please note we are changing our prepay terms and conditions. If your prepay mobile is not topped up or a chargeable use has not been made in a 6 month period then, following notice from us, your prepay service will be suspended. Any credit will be removed from your account 2 months later. However, you still have 7 months from the time of suspension to reactivate your number and reinstate your credit.

Free SIM and top up by €5 every 6 months couldnt get better than that, sound like the way to go. Thanks..
