renault laguna 2001 timing belt broke

    hi all

    asking bout this for a friend

    the timing belt on the car broke ,what kind of damage does this do, i heard its expensive when it does ,and she has been told €1500 euro by someone

    It all depends on how nuch damage has been done - could be anything from no damage at all right up to broken valves bouncing off pistons and scoring cylinder bores. She'll really have to have the head off to be sure. Some people will recommend just replacing the belt and seeing whether the engine still has compression - this saves time if nothing's been bent but wastes time if it has.

    Ya its expensive alright! Usually the valves in the engine bend and damage pistons/rings etc so its like an engine rebuild to fix it.

    Another option you have is source an engine from a breakers and replace the engine with the new one. It works out cheaper and can be quicker to do too.

    A 9 year old Laguna is probably worth around €1700 tops if it was a minter so not worth repairing imo if the engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
