Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sub optimal locking strategies

    Hi,

What with the increase in reports of bike theft on here, I thought I would offer some thoughts on 'sub optimal' locking strategies.

For my commuting utility bike, I have a Kryptonite Evolution (orange, small D) and a Kryptonite cable. Where possible, I lock the frame to something solid with the D lock and use the cable (7') on the front wheel and the saddle.

Unfortunately, sometimes that's just not possible. I won't go so far as to say my bike is awkward ;) but sometimes there isn't a convenient solid 'lockable-to' thingy close at hand.

I'm not talking about leaving the bike there for extended periods of time and it's not worth the time/ effort to move somewhere more secure.

So, I use the cable lock to lock to a 'lockable-to' thingy and the D lock to 'disable' the bike. I do this by threading the cable lock through the front wheel and the saddle and then onto the D Lock which I put on the down tube and around one of the pedal cranks.

So, if you want to steal my bike, you can snip the cable lock. However, you can't cycle off on my bike, you'll have to walk off with the D lock banging off the chainset. Presumably not ideal.

Anyway, that's my tuppence worth for sub optimal locking, where you have the locks, but not the location.

    Any thoughts?

    DFD.

PS. I appreciate that the Krypto Evo is not infallible, I'm referring to more opportunistic theft.

    DFD.

I was thinking the same, someone started it [probably 1) being a regular poster and known well and 2) having an actual distinctive bike], someone else saw it when it happened to them and then BAM! - a new trend is born, report it on boards :pac:
