It's an enormous undertaking to photograph the entire world and make it available on Google Maps.

Aside from some of the world's major cities, I doubt they update imagery any more often than every few years. I'd say Galway is fairly far down on that list.

It costs money to put satellites in orbit. They have a limited lifetime (durability, propellant for motors etc.)
It takes time for them to make passes and take imagery.
Cloudcover can make a balls of this.
Google have to buy rights to use the satellite imagery.
    Google maps is free.

True, but It's kinda funny if nothing else. I'd almost forgotten what a mess that place was for so long.

I'd be more concerned with what the person who tagged that map has directly south of Karma Nightclub...

In my opinion google maps is a bit crappy really half the country still not properly covered, perhaps this will change when street view is implemented I think the osi map is a lot better

Oh my god quick! Call the internet police. Get them to sort it now!

This is a photo of Eyre Square from Google Maps. I could be wrong, but it looks as though they haven't updated this in a good few years now.

    Fail much?
As civis_liberalis says, Galway is probably very low down on the list of places to update on Google Maps. To give you an idea of just how out of date it is, my parents built an extension at the back of their house back in 2003 which isn't visible on Google Maps yet.

Aerial photos on bing are more up to date and better detailed too.

    http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=swc456g7c9sw&scene=24074896&lvl=2&sty=b

Although they still have the oil tanks down in the docks so they are over a year old at least.

Yeah but bing does not show you where the brass are

The aerial views are much newer in some areas than others:

The end of the M6 in Doughiska is current as at a few months before the last bit of building: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=118430277906869425347.00046243465feb6f400d2&ll=53.27434,-9.048969&spn=0.001796,0.004447&t=h&z=18

OTOH, if you look at Knocknacarra, the entire complex that B&Q is in isn't shown: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=118430277906869425347.00046243465feb6f400d2&ll=53.27434,-9.048969&spn=0.001796,0.004447&t=h&z=18

... yes, I've spent a bit of time looking at the aerial maps!

Hard to say which of Google, Bing and Yahoo maps is better: they each have better coverage in some areas and worse in others.

And yes, I noticed the yellow man just this week. Decided it's possibly a bug though ... can't find any views yet.

I noticed a while back that the river Corrib vanished.

After just looking at the map there they have Monroes Tavern on Eglinton Street, Debenhams where Supermacs/Ulster Bank etc are...

They are Kodak moments posted by users rather than the google van.

The yellow man being active is positive though.

The Corrib hasn't been on Google maps since June 09, maybe earlier (maybe forever). It's on my list of things to moan to them about.

I'm very sceptical about many of the locations which are included: too many folks aren't nearly picky enough about where they put labels. It's not as bad as it was, but when I'm doing a map I always put my own place markers in and never rely on other peoples.

I paid many visits to the M6 site while it was under construction and those satellite images were definitely taken in late Spring or early Summer in 2008!

The new satellite images of East Galway only went live on Google maps in late summer of last year (2009) so the images were actually over a year old by the time anyone could see them.

I reported the missing Corrib and Lough Atalia detail in the map view a few months back (finding out the right way to do so was a bloody 'mare), the map data has now been updated and should propagate out to the Google Maps service and everywhere else that uses data from mapinsight, got this a few weeks ago:
Thank you for contacting Tele Atlas. Based on a review of your report, we can now confirm that the change you suggested has been made. It will go out in the next release of our map database. This report is now closed.

    http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/ReportStatus/01a9e75d-6304-102d-866a-9d5bf0a156cc/en

Now how many other people can say that they put the Corrib on the map? :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,966 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

    stunt_penguin, that's brilliant, thank you!

I wonder, will the city council release new bus route maps that are so good that I abandon mine ... or will Google maps get the Corrib before that happens, so that I have to go through mine and remove the hand-drawn river "impersonation" that I did!

I'll be keeping an extra sharp eye out, but would appreciate hearing from anyone else who notices when the Corrib appears on Google.

Hah actually the whole stupid bus maps thing was one thing I wanted to tackle when I came back from Japan 2 years ago....... I could grok the multimodal transportation system of an entire foreign mini-metropolis in about 2 minutes - I have been in Galway for 5 years and still haven't a frackin' CLUE where half the buses go.

I would really like to produce and release into the wild a proper bus map for Galway to promote my own design business and to intentionally embarrass Bus Eireann into some kind of action. That'd show the dolts in charge how it's done.

just noticed that since I posted the link to OSI mapviewer they seem to be in the process of upgrading it. Sometimes when you click on the link you get a new version which has 3 different satelite views from 1995,2000 and 2005 (click on the ortho links bottom right) very interesting to toggle between the 3 views and see the building that went on during the 10 years. http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,625944,724238,5

Its amazing the changes that can be noticed....Specially around doughiska...toogle between 1995 and 2005 by pressing numbers 2 and 4 :D

That option has been there for as long as I can remember. I started using those maps for a project of mine last year, so it's nothing new

<<BIG GRIN>> www.GalwayTransport.info was born out of pretty similar sentiments (except that design/graphics is probably my biggest weakness!)

I've spend a lot of time investigating the business end (biggest issue with hard copy = licence fees for the maps). There's also the issue that having BE do it would just further enhance their position as a near-monopoly provider 'Tis a fascinating business.

The city council have a bus marketing strategy, with a website going live next month, and apparently re-designed maps and signs etc coming with it. I'm looking forward to them.

I'll bet anyone a drink at the next Galway beers that the site will be a let-down.

JustMary, if after the BE site goes up and you still want to continue developing galwaytransport.info i'd be happy to lend a hand with graphics.

I'm no professional but I have been told I'm handy enough. :D

on the campaign to get the River Corrib on Google Maps basemap, submit a report to TeleAtlas... pretty easy to do.... just drop the pin on the town and use their "Point of Interest - Add a Point of Interest - Other' submit category and then add an Additional Remark to tell them what you think of their omission (I think they assume that they couldn't possibly miss a whole bloody river since they haven't included rivers as a category!).

    http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php

Anyways, maybe a few reports might convince them to add it in! :D
