Quick music question

Hey just wondering, if a minor melody comes up today, does the keys change? I know you don't have to modulate, but what I mean is, if there is 1 sharp, which in a normal melody would mean it is in the key of G, does it stay as the key of G in a minor melody, or does the melody being minor change what key it is?
    Thanks

As far as i know, i think you count back 3 from the root, and sharpen the 7th to get your new key :/ I'm confused with all the melody stuff!
