Heading out to Vegas next week...can anyone recommend a shooting range where you can rent guns?

    I found this place:
    http://www.lasvegasgunrange.net/

    ...and this one:
    http://www.americanshooters.com/

Anyone used either of these? Or know of any other similar places?

    Thanks!

Screw that, drive 4 hours west and I'll take you proper shooting.

The tourist ranges are damn expensive, but goos craic. One of the better ones is the (aptly named) Gun Store, just ask any cabbie to take you out to 2900 East Tropicana Av. 10 min drive. Nice selection of rental handguns, shotguns, full-auto, etc.

Was one out there years ago, dunno if it is still there.Desert Sands shooting range [nothing to do with the casino by that name].
It used to host the Soilder of Fortune convention full auto shoot and EOD display.Might be worth a lookup too.

Was in the gun store in vegas last year,, 3 of us got 3 handguns and they let us swap with each other, Then moved onto the automatics,

For the handguns we had to put our driver licence's down but for the machine guns its not required,

    would recommend it though

As I posted in a previous thread:

For what it's worth, the locals don't rate The Gun Store at all, regarding it as a tourist trap whose main aim is to relieve out-of-towners of whatever money the casinos haven't already.
Certainly, the one and only time I looked in, the punters appeared to be being queued up and shifted through as quickly as possible.

I can personally recommend Discount Firearms as a friendly and relaxed place, with a fine selection of goodies to play with.

Also well regarded by the locals, although I haven't been there myself, is the Las Vegas Gun Range & Firearms Center.

I've had AmericanShooters recommended to me. I'll likely be checking it out next week anyway, as I have a free 'ticket.'

What day are you down? I should be there Monday, I'll wager.

Cool, I'm arriving Monday at 12:40. Any idea what time you'll be at the range?

    You'll be a little jet-lagged, won't you?

  • Registered Users Posts: 856 ✭✭✭firefly08

I shouldn't be too jet lagged, I'm only coming from Bismarck ND on a non stop flight! (I live in Bismarck for the time being)

I'm only around for 3 days so I'm not gonna waste any time...

On Wednesday I'm doing this http://www.exoticsracing.com/Ferrari/ferrari-driving-experience_1.htm

so that leaves me Monday and Tuesday to visit the grand canyon and shoot as many different guns as I can lay my mitts on...

    Bismark!? God help you.

That said, ND's a fairly gun-friendly state, you should be able to do anything up there gun-related that you can do in Vegas.

No sadly there are no ranges near me that rent guns of any kind. Haven't been able to find anything like that in the whole state. It is very gun friendly - if you're a citizen or a permanent alien. But since I'm a non-immigrant alien (work visa) they make it very difficult to buy a gun - it's technically legal, but very difficult.

Go and get that "open all areas" piece of ID ..The US drivers liscense and social security number..;) Of which you are entitled to get, then try it.

Buy an antique, there are loads of Antique Fin M39s that have a new barrel etc

Well, he has now popped his handgun cherry. Proved surprisingly good with an XD45.

We have also introduced him to 'Cruising the Vegas Strip in a Convertible'

Haha just back in the door a few hours from my trip...thanks again man!

I have both...wouldn't even have bothered trying to buy without these. It's all about immigrant status; if you have a non-permanent visa (i.e. not a 'green card') then you are what they call a non-immigrant alien. In that case you are generally prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition (Gun control Act). There are a couple of conditions that exempt you from this: one is that you have a hunting license issues from a US state (any state) and the other is that to buy a firearm from a dealer, you have to have been resident in the state for 90 days.

Tourists have exactly the same immigrant status as me but they can't meet the 90 day requirement since tourist visas only last 90 days. Hence they can borrow/rent a gun (but they still must have a hunting license, a lot of people don't know this) but they can't buy from a dealer. I, on the other hand, have a 4 year visa, and am a resident of ND (have driver's license, pay state income tax etc.) but that does't show up any differently on the NICS database - I'm still a non-immigrant alien.

    Gents,

Did the vegas thing a few times and the firing ranges are brillent fun.
I will say the following though:

Avoid The Gun Store like a plague. It is a confirmed tourist trap. Every cab driver will point you in this direction.

One cabbie told us to go to americian shooters, its a "local" place. We went there and they give you a short demonstration of how to load the gun as well as a pep talk on safety & sign a waver. From there your given the gun, a box of ammo and a magazine and left to your own devices*. I remember being absolutly scared out of my wits loading my first handgun bullet by bullet and the shock of shooting it made me really really respect the weapon. All of us, some of which hired full autos were allowed to leisurely load and shoot the guns. Between loading, aiming and shooting each gun( 3 of them) I spend about 130 bucks for a duration of 1.5 hours. In the event of a jam or any problem the rangemaster would help me out and I would be set right again. From the hands on experience I got there I came out seriously respecting firearms.***

A few days later, three of us decided we really really wanted to shoot an ak47(amercian shooters Ak was broken due to overuse...must have been used a lot). We got to the Gun Store and the armoury in fairness was top class**, M249 saws etc.

However in each case you are brought to the range and the instructer loads the gun, hands it to you and pretty much holds your arms when you pull the trigger and the second the weapon runs dry is pryed away. ten minutes 3 guns and you walk out 140 dollers poorer.

Havent tried discount firearms but hear that good too.

*While your not babysat its clear that any horseplay will get you shot, all instructers in these ranges are strapped and will shot anyone who get out of line.

**returned to amercian shooters a year later, under new management much better armoury( RPK machine gun full auto!) but got a bit more pricey, they still give you a lot of freedom with the guns though

***while they are a pure aldrenaline rush to use even if the laws allowed it here no way would I want one in the house.

Also, to answer my own original question for the benefit of anyone who's thinking of doing this:

We went to American Shooters, and I'd definitely recommend it. Then yesterday I went to The Gun Store - I would not really recommend that place to be honest. It's more closely supervised, but much more rushed and hectic, and the lanes on the range are extremely cramped. This seems to be the place where all the tourists go. All the staff are armed and dressed as 'mall ninjas' (I'm not joking!) - not that it would bother you, but you'd wonder why. They are very friendly and they do watch over everyone as they're shooting but I still felt uncomfortable there.

America Shooters is much more relaxed, you can take your time, the range has way more lanes and the staff are more down to earth.

While your not babysat its clear that any horseplay will get you shot, all instructers in these ranges are strapped and will shot anyone who get out of line.

Erm...you may be exaggerating a fair bit there, depending on your definition of 'horseplay'...

Let me assure anyone thinking of visiting one of these places, it is extremely unlikely that you will be shot or harmed in any way by the staff - in both places I visited, I honestly felt they are sufficiently on the ball that they'll disarm you and kick you out before it gets to that point, if you're posing a threat to others.

However if you ignore the safety instructions you will probably harm yourself or someone else, and if you do it's going to be very serious injury or death. Also remember that the other shooters could be idiots too.

So no horseplay of any definition, but don't be afraid to try out places like American Shooters - it's not the Wild West or anything!

I meant horsepplay hypothetically, none of us were messing nor was anyone else but the staff were armed and with good reason.

Staff were nice people and really helpful.

    Hi Guys,

My girlfriend and I went to american shooters in Las Vegas. Based on the reviews here. It was well worth the visit and not to pricey either. Between the two of us 200 rounds and a glock and a sig sauer. Very happy with the outcome of it. Then decided to go with the M16 and 40 rounds...Very good experience...

If you ever get the opportunity to go you should.

Planning on going to Vegas if not next year def 2012, (re-newing the marriage vows :)) whilst we are there I was planning on checking out the Gunstore for a shoot, based on the advice here I think I will be going elsewhere.

Great thread, thanks for all the info.
