A letter from a senior official in the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, seen by The Irish Times, says the proposals by Forfás are “not credible” and “would ultimately detrimentally impact on enterprise, research, innovation and investment in Ireland”.

The letter seems to be a real beauty; packed full of cliches from the Civil Servant's Defensive Primer. All the usual stuff about insufficient demand, EU state aid rules etc. (it is strange that they would believe that Forfas would buy those arguments) and there's some nice, creepy mandarin stuff too; veiled threats of white elephants, state aid challenges, compensation for market distortion etc.
While some countries have plans and proposals for interventions,” the department “would highlight that none of them are proven. All have their critics.”
Suffice to say, it adds, the department “believes that market distortion would be found to exist which would in turn give rise to a robust State aid challenge”.

It would be nice to see what the Forfas plans actually are or were. We may never know whether the letter has done its job.

    Subtext,

"How dare you, a government body, come in to us, a government body, gratuitously highlighting our complete failure to devise and implement communications policy. We won't even think about this coz we don't want to and here is the EU Competition bogeyman for you and a NYaaaaaHH Boo as well.

Don't come back to us again or we will set Ryan on you to make a long speech about his usual smart green piffle that will bring the whole lot of ye out in a clammy sweat at the idiocy of it all."

The only way ireland ever gona have a NGN is if we have a open network and all the fixed line companies come together to build it .The trail eircom doing in wexford and sandyford FTTH magnet has said they would be interested taking part in it .

That a start now only if our government drop the fibre tax it probably wouldn't cost 2.5billion they want private sector to do so why in hell are they making it so hard for them to do it. It make jobs bring investment can't understand our government thinking are they brain dead.
