Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What I like most is the assistants that do everything for you. I'm keeping an eye out on eBay and might invest.

I don't think Chase is going too crazy, if you're as big as him and working with huge clients you need that sort of backup.

I have about 8 1Tb drives for backing up my main computer and a few of them are for offsite. I plan to spend a few days going over all the files and revising the backups soon :)

he seems to have an assistant called (well, is referred to as in the video) d'argtanian. that's either quite cool or irritating beyond belief.

I back up about once a month, This is all data not just photos, I make a dedicated file on the C drive called "images" which everything photowise is saved too, LR catalog etc etc, this is then backed up to a 1TB disk and then if/when I need space I can remove the images file.

I got an external 1TB drive there recently for €70, so its definitely worth doing, even for other important 'stuff' aswell.
/Now I just need to find that fiber cable I left in the garage and run it to my holiday home in the canaries, just to be sure to be sure :D

On a side note as regards backing-up online, like dropbox or mozy etc, I...............just wouldn't trust it, maybe that opinion will change in time but for now I much prefer my 'personal' home storage.:o

A lot of them are totally secure and backed up( if that's your issue ) and in the event of a hard disk failing data will still be online.

I think the issue is Ireland broadband, I'm on a 1mb upload which is quite high and still I could not see myself uploading GB's of photos to dropbox, It'll probably work out more expensive that buying external hard drives due to the amount of time your PC would have to be turned on.

    totally secure
Thats the thing tho, are they ? For now I wouldn't use them, and yeah the upload speed would be a big turn-off.

That's just for photos. I have another 2tb of internal drives for music/movies backup.

Just read about the Amazon backup product called Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3)

PS stcstc, I used to use tape for large amounts of video and metadata backup, fine in theory but not quite so fine on restore when the machine just sat there and looked at you and said "sorry". Mind you that was in the early 00s so technology may have come on a long way since then.

The real answer is not to have all your eggs in the one basket.

That doesn't mean just having an external backup drive - but have more than one drive in different locations, and more than one type of media.

So, I burn original RAWS to DVD, have multiple copies on 1 and 2 TB hard drives and keep finished JPEGs and docs online. Like Chase, I also have a secret offsite storage location - my aunt's house.

I use Smugmug and Amazon S3 (via Jungle Disk) for online storage. I would probably make much more use of online storage if the upload and download speeds weren't so slow.

Damn you guys are harsh. I just watched it and after reading the posts in the thread I was preparing myself for a total gob****e. He actually seemed alright, I thought the video was very watchable and it wouldn't put me off watching another of his videos.

He's a bit ... "Wahey, over here ... BLING! look at the chit we got! - we're great, really ... OTT FTW!"

Yup, I find him slightly irritating. And OTT.

Unless you have images of the Queen taking a dump on Michael Jackson's grave, no need for the trouble they go to. Really.

    actually i have to disagree

any paying client, where there is specialised stuff involved in setting up shoot, models, makeup etc

then the time they take to have stuff in multiple places etc is a good thing. some of those shoots could cost a huge amount of cash, if you blow it on one of them, apart from paying for the shoot. word gets out you blew it and man soooooo many clients would leave you for dust in a hurry. and then you wouldnt have any work for you and all of ya mates in the office etc.

i remember reading an interview with bob carlos clarke where he got so wrapped up in one shoot on a beach that it was the model who spotted that the tide had come in and swamped his bag with all his gear and film. or another time where he walked into his darkroom, and switched on the light, forgetting about the dozens of rolls of unfixed film sitting out.

if the cost of one complete re-shoot is more than the cost of kitting yourself out to look like mission control, it's worth it, even without entering into the damage to your reputation, as stcstc mentioned.
