Servicing your own road bike

Hi Guys,

I have wheeled my bike out of the garrage after leaving it gather dust for a year (I went very lazy ) and just gave it a good oil etc. But I was wondering is there anywhere that teaches you how to self service your bike, the correct way to take it apart, what needs to be done etc. Because it's such an expensive piece of kit, I am apprehensive about messing around with it. I reckon this is something that everyone should know how to do. When I used to cycle it a lot I just brought it into my local bike shop for a service but would prefer to do it myself. Do people learn from books or are there courses?

I bought a book david zinn and the art of road bike maintainance.

Its full of stuff, I wouldnt be very proficient in bike maintainance so I do the basics clean chains regulary.

Clean rear hub and generally keep the bike clean and free from dirt.

I think the Wiki might have a lot of links to sites that have videos explainng most things.

The main thing is to have the right tools for each job without the right tools just dont bother starting really

Agreed, I got myself Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance and also an hour long service / tutorial from Mr. Skeffington and I'm pretty much set.
