Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ex-UK person here.. now happily paying PRSI in Kerry!

Anyway, what are the rules on trikes like these in Ireland?

Would a trike based on, say, a 1979 Honda Cx500 still be classed as vintage here? What if it is newer - car or bke VRT? Is insurance hard to get?

    best.

Really impressed with the photo. I'm hoping to bring Rewaco in from UK and have made number enquiries. Perhaps what I've been told from the authorities might help you:

    2006 trike 1600 cc €975 VRT payable
2010 trike 1600 cc €1755 VRT payable plus VAT
To avoid VAT trike must be over 6 months and have done 60000 km.

When you bring trike into country go to VRT office within couple days with vehicle in case they want to inspect it and take UK log book and cheque for VRT (no cash). Also have PPS number with you.

Taxed as motorised tricycle €76 per annum

    Can drive on car licence

The only insurance company I could find willing to quote was Carole Nash 1800 298550.

If you manage to unearth more information can you post info on thread.

    Cheers

    It's 6,000km not 60,000km:D
You can also pay by laser but there's an upper limit on it, the Motors Forum has a huge VRT thread with the limit

Get written quotes on all of the above, in writing, from everyone involved, before you spent a single cent.

I met a guy at a meet lately on a trike, and VRT guys took 2500 off him for his, and he has to tax it at car rates as well. Huge problems all round.

And, if the trike is a Q-plate, aka kit car plate, you'll get comletely shafted as they could rate is 'new'. We don't have a Q equivalent here, see.....

OP, I've driven a genuine 1930's Morgan 3-wheeler, which that replicates, and it was a total hoot. The CX engine would be cool, though. Or even a Guzzi-engined one.

Just remember one thing about a 3-wheeler: no matter which path you take, you'll always hit the pothole..........!! :D

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I looked into this about 4 years ago. The best advice I got was to get something at least 30 years old with an age-related plate. The VRT crowd wont get too excited about it because of the flat rate of €50 VRT whether it's a car or bike.

With the change of rules for the NCT you are now looking at anything pre 1980 to avoid future hassle.

I didn't get as far as checking out insurance but I would agree that Carole Nash are probably the first to ask.

You should be able to get some up to date advice on all this from people have ongoing dealings with the VRT crowd by contacting BTW Ireland. Can't remember what the craic is with links here, so in case it gets automatically rerouted or something, it's btwireland dot com. You'll need to register to post a question but there are helpful people on there.
