Restless dog

My dog is a 12 years old terrier cross. He has always been an excitable dog but he has calmed considerably in the last few years.

Lately however he's gotten unsufferable. He is constantly running around the place, rarely sits still and when he is still he is constantly whinning.

We thought that it was just that he wasn't getting enough excercise (though, he is in better shape than he has been in a long time). But we've started walking him more, so much so that he'll go to bed for an hour or two when we get back from walks but when he wakes he's restless again.

We thought he was bored of his old toys so we got him some new ones. No good.
He's not lonely, he doesn't look sick and hasn't lost his appetite.

We can't take it anymore! He's whinning and whinning, somebody has to be able to help! please?!

Might be something wrong with him - visit to vet?

I really don't think so, it's not that kind of whinning. He's been sick before and he was the complete oppisite, we barely noticed that we had a dog!

It's more like there is a bítch in heat down the road..only there isn't because he got out without his leash on the other day and didn't run off.

Could be diet-related... What are you feeding him?

What about senile demensia? Dogs get it too, and symptoms can be restlessness, barking/whinging for no apparent reason, general forgetfullness like constantly wanting to go outside but then seem not to know why they wanted to go out in the first place. Might be worth a trip to your vet

Would also suggest you investigate senile dementia as a possible cause of your dog's restlessness, esp. given his age. Our old labrador suffered with this & displayed very similar behaviour.
