Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland has the 2nd lowest IQ of any developed nation (only Croatia is lower) but we've got soul.

If they tested me we would average the highest because I am just that smart. Cork must be bringing us down

That's a pretty unjustifiable generalisation. Many Americans are delusional morons, but so are many Irish. I have seen and spoken to many Americans who are caring, cultured and rational people, and who are the polar opposite of the stereotype. It's just a shame that they're in the minority, but I would also argue that the same applies here.

Yeah but I live in Ireland so hating Irish people would drive me crazier.
Most Irish people are morons we have the lowest IQ in the EU.
Our average IQ is quite a bit lower than the American average.
Which just proves that those tests are bull****.

This is no surprise. Americans are descended from the scum of the world. Those who wouldn't work to build up their own countries but preferred to run off halfway across the world to eat big macs, get aids, watch child porn and smoke meth.
Just telling it like it is.

    Pack in the trolling please.

See what I was saying about the people who went to America. This creature isn't even aware of what an honour it is to be Irish. It should be an Irish passport and only an Irish passport that it has.

You talk such **** , talking through your thoin. You dont know anything about me.
I didn't have to learn Irish in school but I did . I also probably have a better knowledge of Irish history than you.

IQ means jack ,people with average IQ can be the most successful men and women.

Youre probably one of these clowns that says Irish is a dead language.

No, Dublin. People get stabbed and shot around here fairly often.

One bad thing I will say about North America is that people there often romanticise Ireland to the point of absurdity. Ireland is in many ways a horrible and backwards place.

In an interview with Matt Stone following the film's release,[11] Anwar Brett of the BBC asked the following question. "For all the targets you choose to take pot-shots at," he asked, "George W. Bush isn't one of them. How come?" Matt Stone replied, "If you want to see Bush-bashing in America you only have to walk about 10 feet to find it. Trey and I are always attracted to what other people aren't doing. Frankly that wasn't the movie we wanted to make."
In another interview, Parker and Stone further clarified the end of the film which seems to justify the role of the United States as the "World Police".[12]
Because that's the thing that we realized when we were making the movie. It was always the hardest thing. We wanted to deal with this emotion of being hated as an American. That was the thing that was intriguing to us, and having Gary (the main character) deal with that emotion. And so, him becoming ashamed to be a part of Team America and being ashamed of himself, he comes to realize that, just as he got his brother killed by gorillas -- he didn't kill his brother; he was a dick, he wasn't an asshole -- so too does America have this role in the world as a dick. Cops are dicks, you ****ing hate cops, but you need 'em.

I really like americans they are friendly, outgoing and really positive people. But their total lck of knowledge of geography is just annoying like its hard to believe how little they know.. Not really a reason to hate them or anything but something that i have always noticed..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,039 ✭✭✭Seloth

All I'm going to say is this...Living in a tourist town I often hear yanks talking of how they are Irish themselves and how my friends((Luckily I wasnt there)) when they were down town in their uniforms were baraged by americans as they were Irish school boys...If that was over there we'd be sued!

Those who lazily brand those who lazily brand America as a nation of fat gun toting fools are the real fools.

There are three hundred million Americans. It is no surprise that there are some smart Americans but the Vast Vast majority are morons.

This is no surprise. Americans are descended from the scum of the world. Those who wouldn't work to build up their own countries but preferred to run off halfway across the world to eat big macs, get aids, watch child porn and smoke meth.

You're absolutely correct with your pithy observations and I need a breakfast roll right this instant. One with white pudding.

The anti-Americanism attitude here, is nothing to what it is in my own home country (England). I'm not excusing the Irish anti-American sentiments, but just throwing in a frame of reference. Its' all the more ridiculous, coming from Brits. They're criticising the US for everything we have done, except worse.
Personally, no. I don't like the archetypal "Republican" American and the way they get on. But in the media here, you only see the worst examples of it. I am sure that not all Americans (Republican, or Democrat) are as bad as what we see in the media.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones! We're far from perfect ourselves. Alcoholism accepted as a national pastime; paedophilia covered up; politicians 'who did a lot for the country' talking their way out of accepting bribes/exorbitant expenses; begrudging anyone who works hard and does well for themselves, putting them down 'ah sure but it's only a bit of slagging' etc.
There are a lot of positives to Ireland, but I can't see how we can run down another country when there's so much wrong with ours. And as for America being a dominating leader, well if they weren't the leader, another country would be the leader. What's stopping Ireland from being the leader apart from alcoholism and begrudgery?

I love how people bash americans for not knowing anything outside of their own country, be it politics of geography. These people fail to realise that the sheer size of America means that each state is practically its own country. Youd be hard rpessed to find someone in Ireland who knows the ins and outs of the politics of a tiny place like lichtenstein, and to most americans from a state thats hundreds of times the size of ireland like Texas, the politics of and culture of a tiny little island like us would be lost on most of them.
But i guess its easy to make fun of other nationalities for being stupid so hurr durr amerikunz r stoopid cuz dey dont know how to pronounce stuff in irish herp derp

I think most people roll their eyes at the "we are the best country in the world" attitude of America.

There is a better country in the world than the U.S.? Name it please.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭eightyfish

    Randon thoughts on this topic:

I don't think anyone hates Americans (or the English) in any real sense. They're more pantomime villains really, in certain circumstances.

Most people (including me) do hate American foreign policy. However, it's easy for any country that spends most of its time sitting on the fence (us) to criticise.

There are a lot of ignorant Americans. There are a lot of ignorant Irish. It's just that there are more Americans, and more cameras, and more YouTube accounts, so the stupidity is broadcast.

America is also huge. Really huge. So it's incredibly diverse. I loved New York, I didn't like Washington DC. Anyone who says "Americans are XXX" is generalising to a massive degree. It's equivalent in terms of population to saying "The Germans, Turkish, French, British and Italians are all XXX".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭DeepSleeper

Well Chairman Meow, Texas is only about ten times the size of the Republic of Ireland, but I take your point. It is fair enough to expect people from the USA to have a good gereral understanding of geography, but should we expect them all to know all the details? A few pages back, a poster mentioned an Irish guy who though Cleveland might be in Idaho - so what? Failing to get an 'A' in geography is not evidence of stupidity and yet Ireland probably has as many idiots per capita as any other country.... The real issues IMHO are (i - national scale) American foreign policy and (ii - personal scale) occasional bouts of cultural insensitivity.

Being Irish-American born in the US to Irish parents this is my point of view on the avid anti-American stance in Ireland.

I find it quite funny and hilariously sad the severe Anti-American stance in Ireland. Some people I meet in Ireland have some sort of hatred towards the States. For what reason, I can't comprehend. It makes no sense at all the fact that a lot of Irish people seem to think it's okay to hate America.

It makes no sense at all. Any Anti-American topic on here seems to go down well, but any topic regarding any any-British content seems to be a taboo subject for you guys.

I can't get my head around this fact that you hate us more than you hate the British. We have been the most accepting country of Irish immigrants, we are the country who love the Irish, yet we're hated.

We have never tried to colonize your country, obviously, yet the Anti-American bias holds stronger than the anti-British bias over here. That point is merely a comparison between ourselves and the British.

Can somebody shed some light on this for me? Why are Americans hated over here?

    Any great reasons?

I don't hate Americans. I do however have a massive issue with your foreign policy, Military spending and the kick in the balls bush gave the UN by going into Iraq despite the rest of the worlds objections. Also your policies arnt too peachy with me either (extraordinary rendition, Armenian and Saudi torture camps... ).

Sorry to ruin your day but its not just Ireland that has issues with this.

You may percieve it as as anti-American or hate or whatever you'd like. Its not a personal attack its criticism which we are perfictly entitled to do as a "free country".

As to your point on not "hateing" the British or rest of the allies. They followed Americas lead and are now paying the price as are you for destabising Iraq (Afganastan was already fooked). You are now in a long long drawn out war that will make northern ireland look like a picnic.

The British people arnt proud of being in Iraq, the acknowledge being lied to and manipulated but the recognise now they have to do what they can to stabilise the region get a government and a country up and running.

Christ. Can you not go and paint an entire nation with the same brush, please? Not all of us hate American. In fact, if I were to take my group of friends and my family as one small example of the Irish people, I cant think of one of them who 'hates' the US. I'm not saying they're all in love with America, but they certainly don't hate it.

If I were to say every single American was a war-mongering, ill-educated redneck, I'm certain you'd point out how stupid that statement is. Don't judge us all by a tiny precentage of idiots who live here.

If you are going to make a point about scale you may as well get it right. Texas is not hundreds of times the size of Ireland. It's not even ten times the size of Ireland.

    Ireland: 32,595 sq miles.
    Texas: 268,820 sq miles.

There isn't THAT much wrong with Ireland really - Irish people generally have it good in terms of standard of living and freedoms politically.
Begrudgery isn't just an Irish thing either - and sometimes what's presumed to be begrudgery isn't begrudgery at all, it's just justified dislike (e.g. Michael O'Leary). Scraping the bottom of the barrel if that's an example of a national outrage tbh.
Btw, whenever people list the awful things wrong with the people from their country, are they including themselves?
People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

I can't see how we can run down another country when there's so much wrong with ours.
People can criticise aspects of whatever country they like. Saying they can't because they come from a country where bad stuff happens (as if they're personally responsible) is absolutely ridiculous - and Ireland isn't even remotely comparable to the US, or anywhere really, in terms of atrocities.

Again though, anti Americanism is ****. Politically and militarily, its government has done some really, really fukd up stuff... so, let's all blame the Miller family from Delaware?

Rubbish. I was made welcome when I was in the US. (and Canada, India, Australia, France, Italy...) Any American and Canadian relations who've come as tourists have said they were made feel very welcome also.
