Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've never really thought that Ivan ever understood the social impact of having betting shops in your town... He seems to think it's an honourable trade...

I also dont understand why he bought over those two bookies when he says himself that the move was to online..

I honestly don't think that poor Ivan is all that bright. :(

Wasn't Paddy Power already in existence when Ivan bought those properties?
Looks like IY was too much of a dinosaur to accept how the future was shaping up
for bookies, i.e. online was the way to go.

I didn't mean YOU had an agenda :D

Marian is always being accused of having an agenda - "dumbing it down" or "being thick" in this case (maybe "agenda" is the wrong word, when I put it like that). Maybe she's just framing questions in an open way to invite expansive answers?

It was a very lively, honest, entertaining interview. You might be annoyed at
a lot if what Ivan had to say, but no one could fault him on the honesty front!

I always liked him, even when he was in politics - which is some feat on his part

I wish someone would get the Blackpool hotel on the like to see what on earth they were thinking - talk about a stunt blowing up in their faces!

You were happy enough with the system at the time Ivan... You did nothing about it when you were in there... His anecdote about the >400 jobs that he took to his constituency showed that .... I like Ivan, but it's a bit much asking for the current politicians to "cut out that racket" when he was doing the same things himself..

Interesting in light of the news re Michael Ring's local soccer club receiving
€200,000 for the second year in a row!

Yates is almost brazen in his honesty. Definitely not holding back on the reality
of how 'pork barrel' politics operates.

The Government is meant to be afraid of the people?

    What a very strange sentiment.

    Usual rabble rabble rabble here.

If this happened to Ruth Coppinger, would she call it democracy... Of course she lives with a permanent cloud over her dour head anyway, so she is probably always expecting a downpour..

I still can't believe all the fuss about a water balloon. In 2002, Michael Noonan was hit by a custard pie - which I would argue is worse than a balloon full of water. The media (and Michael Noonan himself) made light of it. It hardly represents the potential collapse of democracy.

There's a great story in Dancing At The Crossroads by John Waters about a chef who wiped his ballsack with a steak before frying it up for CJH.

Not for their physical safety. We have elections and everyone has a vote which politicians can be afraid of.

That's essentially what I meant - I in no way meant to imply that Government personnel should be cowering under their desks in case of flying pigs' bladders filled with unspeakably foul potions, though the thought has some appeal.

Bizarre ... I doubt there are many unemployed people in the country, or parents whose sons & daughters had to emigrate to find work, who would agree creating employment isn't THE most important issue in the country.

Or the state paying Bertie aherns pensions!

No. its true. After decades of supporting the use of violence for political ends, SF are condemning the violence used by a small section of the water protesters.

I didn't say that ... I was pointing out that the shortage of social housing now is an obvious direct consequence of selling off the stock of social housing cheaply. They should have been sold a market value and the money used to provide replacement stock.

But they were sold at market value for the areas they were in!

Surely the whole point of social housing is that the lower paid can afford a house as well. Is it not the councils fault for not selling the houses with a 5 % mark up and re investing the money in more housing.

Instead of building massive new council offices in every small town like they did in my area.

I don't think it was people buying council houses that bankrupt the country, more like the Fianna fail voter that had to have the triple glazed PVC overlooking the patio and BMW.

They were sold at marked down prices to the renter - they were not put on the open market & sold for the highest price.
I totally agree with the vanity projects so many councils engaged in - unnecessary and totally wasteful.
I most certainly am not blaming council tenants for bankrupting the country - that's just plain silly

They were sold at large discounts to the existing tenants.

So you would have prefered them to have beenbput on the open market, to be sold to the same 'developers' that bought up all the other property's to flip them?

Thus making the property's even more unaffordable to the people that really needed them!
