Well would you prefer you make a little money off these punters ( mixers or the odd round) or nothing at all? The simple fact is many people simply cannot afford to go out like they used to. And some feel they would rather go out cheaply, than not at all.

We're liable for any drink consumed on the premises that wasn't sold on the premises. There's a potential for fines that would far out weigh the cost of these punters not turning up.

I think I did. I want to go and enjoy the facilities such as big screen, comfy seats etc. Do I want to watch what's showing? Meh no, I'll just bring my own movie and watch that instead.

and there i was thinking people went to the cinema to see the films being played. well then i think you're on to something, ill let all the pirates know they need to film the comfy seats and the big screen, no need to worry about catching the movie itself.

Eh no.... my friends are actually understanding. If we are a little broke on a particular night, it isnt a big deal to say "no I'm staying on my own tonight".

would never spend any more than 10-15 euro a night on drink in any pub or club. For pubs stash a 6-pack around the back outside the pub, buy one pint and keep going out for refills, tis very handy.

And for clubs just go out absolutely scuttered, and when drunk you're usually compelled to steal drinks (I am anyway)

Another thing for me as a barman would be the fact that we are also liable for your drunkeness. Technically I'm not allowed serve a drunk person. If someone comes in and is consuming their own alcohol, I can't control it, I can't say when they've had enough. They walk out stinking drunk, falling all over the place, not only does it look bad for the premises for passers by, they could also seriously injure themselves, as you have been in our premises all evening, we could well find ourselves on the end of a lawsuit, and in this case the barman could be liable, not the business. (I am not suggesting that the OP or anyone in this thread would ever get that drunk.)

And surely its a question of escalation? If everyone does it and the pubs allow it and it just becomes the norm then how can businesses survive? Try to remember that these places are businesses. They are not there for your pleasure alone. If they are not making money then we will have no more pubs/clubs whatever.

Pretty scummy thing to do tbh. A pub exists to sell drink.

It's the same thing as with the smoking ban, the customer is the one smoking, but the pub will be fined. In essense we are responsible for policing the pub.

Now if I saw someone take a cheeky swig from a hip flask I wouldn't think much of it, but if I saw some idiot, useful or not, steal my drink I'd be a very pissed off and that wouldn't end well for them. Not saying in a violent way, but i'd certainly make sure everyone knew what a cunt they were and that they were escorted from the club.

Bleh? Do you get mortified if Daddy refuses to drop you to school in the Mercedes too?

OP, ignore the naysayers. You can only afford what you can afford. You'll be kicked out if you're caught, but it's a small price to pay for avoiding our laughable drink prices.

TBH, I think the bigger suckers are the ones paying full price.

The laws around licenced premises are quite strict, only drink sold on the premises can be consumed on the premises. We'd be fined for breach of that law.

I would aswell, just saying my drunken self doesn't really care. Most of these drinks would be forgotten and unattended leftovers aswell. I've had many a drink stolen from me just by keeping my eye off it for a second.

I don't do it, but i can understand why people do,specially with the price of drink in big cities.

I prefere to have a few drinks in the house before hand and head out late-it's the done thing to do where i live. .

Well my drunken self does many things but never so far from my own personality that i'd go stealing peoples stuff. I never leave a drink unattended and after the thread in here when so many people confessed to leaving drinks half full of urine to get their revenge on drink thiefs I certainly wouldn't wanna start.

I work in a pub and to be honest if I caught you in my place with your own drink the next time your feet would hit the ground would be on the day your getting discharged from the hospital...Its a F$%king nightmare trying to make any money in this industry at the moment just to cover costs and with w-ankers like you bringing in your own drink is just not on...IF you want somewhere warm to sit and have a drink then sit at home..It is people like you who are ruining the Irish Pub and industry..

If I can't afford it I just don't go out. If I can barely afford it I'll have a few before going out and if I can afford it I'll get bananas in the pub :)

afraid not, people tend to go to pubs for the atmosphere or to meet friends or perhaps a new love interest, dont think anyone goes with the sole purpose of the ability to give money to the bar man, thats just a by products of the socialisation. paying for the food and drink tends to be the one grevience people have withpubs, hence the quick reaction to this thread. i personally would never do it, i choose ro stay at home which my own drink and watch that dvd you mentioned earlier.

oh well, its a bad habit for me at this stage. And I'm fairly sure I have drank urine before accidentally. mmmmmmm.

Paying for food and drink is the grievance?? Drinking and eating are the by-products? I'm sorry but you are very much mistaken. I think you will find that a bar opens its doors to sell food and drink, and that the socialisation between patrons is the by-product. Take alcohol out of the equation and see how busy these bars would be.
