it's not that common, but it does happen that matures do premed in RCSI (why you would want to pay 15 grand to do premed when you can do biology and chemistry for the leaving as an external student for about 200 euro and save yourself that money is beyond me though!)

there were two who had done premed last year as matures that came into JC1 with the rest of us this year.

there was still 15 matures in our year though.

they just have 2 less places in Jc1 the following year to compensate if some do premed.

Thanks, do you know how many of the 15 already have degrees already?

Heres what I can remember off the top of my head.. everyone has a primary degree as far as I know.

    people with "medical related" degrees:
    1 nurse
    1 speech and language therapist
    3 radiographers
    3 physios
    1 Occupational therapist
2 science/pharmacology with masters degrees also

    people with non related degrees:
1 business degree (did gamsats/lc, skipped premed)
1 engineer (repeated lc sciences to skip premed)
    1 accountant (did premed)
1 other girl did a degree I can't remember and did premed.

gotta have a degree for mature entry. in the other colleges they tend to want masters/phd's on top of that..

If you don't have a degree I'd focus on getting in off the l.c.. even if it takes 2years you will save a ton of money. if i remember correctly you got a pretty good hpat last year right?

Ye got 193, I am doing the LC again and its going to plan :) Didnt realise you needed a degree altough I kind of thought they strongly favoured those that did. Is there anywhere official I can see that, there wont be any point in me applying if thats the case

  • Registered Users Posts: 486 ✭✭hollingr

i dont think that's official anywhere, it's just the norm. no harm in applying, sure you've already filled out the forms once you can reuse most of that stuff then just add in whatever else you did this year :)

Just a question for any of you that might have applied to UCD through mature entry.

With regards to the application how did you fill it out? There isn't that much room on the template for each section so do you think it would be ok to write 'see pages attached' and then attach your reply onto the application itself?

Also approximately how long was each of your sections?

For the CAO application? Yes I did that a few years back (I was called for interview, but had been offered a place already so rang them and declined). I entered my basic details in the beginning on the online form and then for the wordy bits i.e. work experience and personal statement, etc., I said something like see postal documents for more details, and then posted in properly formatted pages for those sections. IIRC there was a word limit online, but you can get around that by doing them separately. I think I judged the online space by eye, but no individual section was longer than an A4 page.
You do need to get all your postal documents in to the CAO within 7 days of the closing date.

To anyone that got into Medicine through mature entry, how are you finding being in with 18/19 years olds? Is there much of a divide between the different ages or does everyone get along and socialise together?

    Quick question.

If i only have an ordinary degree (BA) in a non science subject, would i have to undergo the pre med course in RCSI before being considered as mature student.

Do you need to have undergone GAMSAT for pre med in RCSI.

Basically im kind of hoping someone can tell me how I can apply for medicine as a mature student and what steps i have to take to be anywhere near being accepted.

    Many thanks

    Two possibilities Tekken...

    1. You have a 2.1 or better in your BA = your eligible for graduate entry. Sit the GAMSAT and you have an equal chance as compared to anyone with a science background. 4 years (mostly) and your fast tracked.

    2. You don't have a 2.1 in your BA = options are apply as a mature student (assuming your 23+) and/or apply as an undergrad if you have 480+ LC points. For both of these you need to sit the HPAT. (GAMSAT not relevant) For mature entry you can also expect interviews and a fair load of work going into your applications (CV, personal statement, references etc) 5 years plus possibly premed year too, at the discretion of the uni and totally down to supply/demand and who you happen to be competing with for places that year.

    Hope that helps

RCSI have been offering up to 15 Mature Applicants for the past few years for Undergraduate Medicine and they select those for interview based on the score of the HPAT.

As previously stated, these are fee-paying places so it will be quite a cost for the 5 years but if you qualify for Gradaute Medicine, it is 4 years fee -paying so it may be financially beneficial to do Graduate rather than Mature Undergraduate.

Best if luck in any case

If you have an ordinary degree - does that mean it is a Level 7?
Can't say much about whether it is accepted or not, but you would be in a great position re fees. Medicine is a Level 8 so you would be eligible for free fees, as it would be classed as progression.

Only for the final year of the level 8 course. You might not receive them for the preceding 3 years as you already hold a three year qualification.

Tuition fees will not be paid in respect of:
students pursuing a second undergraduate course.
students who already hold a postgraduate qualification
Notwithstanding this condition and subject to compliance with the other conditions of the Free Fees initiative, students who already hold a Level 6 qualification (Higher Certificate or National Certificate) or a Level 7 qualification (Ordinary Bachelor Degree or National Diploma) and are progressing to a Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree) course without necessarily having received an exemption from the normal duration of the course may be deemed eligible for free fees,

Mature Applicants apply for the Undergraduate Medicine course in RCSI each year and undertake the HPAT selection test.

They are then called for interview based on the HPAT score.

As to whether you go into pre-med and not is a matter for the institution.

The places are fee-paying and I believe they have 15 places.

Key word in bold. Its not a given that you would get them so its best to check into ones own fee status early on in the application process. Most colleges will tell you if you are free fee eligible.

Hi guys I've only found this thread now wish I had seen it before! Just did my RCSI interview today, not too sure what to expect but fingers crossed!

Have my interview for UCC tomorrow and NUIG in June so have some back ups I suppose. Haven't heard anything from Trinity or UCD yet does anyone know when they let people know and how many mature students they are taking this year? Really want to go to RCSI but I'll take anywhere if I don't get it!

RCSI normally take about 15 Mature Students each year but these are fee paying.

Other institution only take about 1 or 2.

Trinity held interviews yesterday but they may hold more interviews if they don't fill all their places during initial interviews. They have 8 places and about 28 people interviewing (estimate, I can't get an exact number on that one). They told me they would let me know next week how I got on.

UCD decide how many they will take based on applications, I haven't heard of them taking more than 2 and it could be early June before they contact anyone.

UCC were interviewing twenty people for four places. They said they will let us know next week aswell.

RCSI invite 30 to interview and have 15 places. They told me they will let people know next week as well via letter and email.
