There has been a lot of activity regarding the proposal for a second level school in Claregalway. To date 363 families have returned the endorsement form, which results in 559 children. This figure is updated regularly as forms are returned. Should you know anyone that has not received it or returned the form please look up the website: www.claregalwaynewschool.com.

There is a proposed meeting with the Minister for Education on the 7th of July and the more that have responded the greater our mandate in pushing the case forward.

There are more details as you would expect and should you wish to discuss further please ring me or Paddy Tobin who must be acknowledged for the work he has put into the proposal.

    Regards,
    Michael Hannon QFA NCEA

I think I'll send this to my sister - admittedly my niece is only 1 but it might be built by the time she is going to secondary school.

My class from Baunmore went in each direction.

Who will the Patron for this be?
Its badly needed, will send in an endorsement during the week.

Firstly thank you for your feedback,
The patron will be the VEC, we discussed it at a meeting on the 28th where we also discussed the role of the Church, Educate Together and the Dept. of Education.
Followng that meeting we had a face to face meeting with Joe Mc Donagh last Thursday who has given us a great insight as to the workings of the Dept. Of Education and of course the advantages of the VEC.
He is to meet us again as a group of parents on Tuesday the 6th of July and will also attend a proposed meeting on Wednesday the 7th with the Minister for Education in Lenister House.
We have put together a strong proposal with facts and figures supporting the need for a Second Level school, we have endorsements from parents which is our strongest mandate, and we have public rerpresentatives and will be getting local industry support also.
Please refer people to the website for endorsement forms which are similar to a pedition but with more detailed information. Should anyone be involved with a school, club, group requireing info please contact us.

Appologies for the length of the reply however, it is an issue where I believe we can have a positive result for the benifit of our children and indeed the wider community.

County or City VEC? About time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 ThinkPositive

The Patron would be the County VEC. We are meeting the CEO, Chairman & Educational Officer this evening.
The meeting with the Minisiter tommorow has been canceled due to a bereavement in her family.

Best of luck with it - I was at the meeting the last day and you are all doing great work - thanks.

Thanks for the support. The key is to keep as many people informed and to get back the endorsement forms, that is the mandate and as we where told, you should never under estimate "people power".
Direct as many people as you can to the website, www.claregalwaynewschool.com
    Thanks again.

CLAREGALWAY GROUP TO MEET EDUCATION MINISTER ABOUT SECONDARY SCHOOL

A campaign group, hoping to build a new secondary school in Claregalway, is holding talks with the Minister for Education this afternoon.(20/07)
County Galway VEC has offered to give patronage to the school, and it's understood around 65 students are already interested in starting first year.
The school would be located at the corporate park in Claregalway, and would take in students from built up areas such as Claregalway, Oranmore and Athenry.

The government will make noises about waiting for the official Census results (summer 2011) and then putting this into a "Schools PPP Bundle" which is supposed to tender in maybe 2013 or 2014 and to be constructed by maybe 2015 or 2016.

They effectively announced Doughiska Secondary in 2005 and still have not actually tendered it, maybe in 2011 or 2012 with a real live school open by 2013. Doughiska is much larger than Claregalway. See.

    http://www.ndfa.ie/TenderCompetitions/schools_ppp_programme3.htm

That will kick Claregalway out to touch until after the next election and that is all that the likes of Grealish and Fahey care about. They will get minimum two elections out of all they have done for Doughiska, 2007 and the next one.

The infamous Claregalway Bypass has been in the programme of government since summer 2007 and nothing has been done about it either, least of all in Claregalway :)

The one thing in favour of the Claregalway school is that it is not a capital project meaning that a new school does not necessarily have to be built. The campaign for the new school have, seemingly, identified a location for the facility which could involve the renting of a premises as opposed to building on a greenfield site, which certainly would not get the green light now.

The school is in the same position as a Gaelscoil anywhere in Ireland. It essentially has to run itself privately for a year or two and constantly fundraise to pay the teachers/principal. This then establishes that there is a demand for a school and the department then step in and pay the teachers, possibly in year two and more likely in year three.

There is some anomaly with duly recognised VEC schools where the department will pay for 7 or 8 full time teacher equivalents including a principal and deputy no MATTER how small the school is. This applies to island schools mountbellew cornamona and rosmuc as far as I know, no reason why Claregalway should not benefit.

Then the department lands in with portacabins. Finally after minimum 5 or 6 years the department gives in and builds a permanent school.

Tánaiste announces Department’s school building work programme for 2011 and plans to establish new post primary schools
    Looks positive :)
"Department is actively engaged in securing sites as a matter of urgency"
    Are they really?

    "New Post-Primary Schools
There is also a need to plan for the establishment of new schools to cater for the demographic growth in the school going population. Many new primary schools have been established in recent years and in addition to the new post-primary schools already announced for Gorey, Doughiska (Galway), Lucan (Clonburris) and Kingscourt, the Tánaiste today announced details of the new areas where new post-primary schools will be required between 2012 and 2016. These are:
    • Ashbourne
    • Dublin – West Blanchardstown
    • Dublin – Mulhuddart
    • Drogheda
    • Claregalway
    • Maynooth
    • Naas
    • Navan
    • North County Dublin / South County Louth
Planning is already under way for accommodation solutions for schools in these areas. In some cases, permanent sites are already available and secured while for the remainder the Department is actively engaged in securing sites as a matter of urgency."

There's a notice in the advertiser looking for a 10 to 12 acre site for a new school in Claregalway.

    From Galway News:
Interim accommodation for Claregalway's new secondary school is to be located in Claregalway Business Park.

County Galway VEC says the accommodation will be a permanent built structure with state-of-the-art facilities at a 30 thousand square foot area in Unit 13.

An application is to be lodged with Galway County Council next week.
    Ref: http://www.galwaynews.ie/28926-vec-unveils-site-interim-accommodation-claregalway-secondary-school

Hopefully it means they will build a decent footpath between the village and the business park, too.
