It will probably be quite a while before another session comes up.

Arses; I just saw this now:(

Put me down for the next one whenever that may be. Apologies I didn't see this in time to make it; kicking myself now:(

    Hello,

I seem to have picked up somebody else's PAIN when I was leaving, so if I have your PAIN you can pick it up sooner rather than later.

This was so much fun, thank you so so much to g'em and jayroc for this, it was such a great experience. One thing I learned was just how bad my balance is, I'll certainly be working on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭Hermione*

It's not mine Silverfish, I can assure you! :D

This was so much fun, and not half as difficult as I'd thought it would be. I can tell I'll be sore tomorrow, but it'll be worth it (I hope!). It's definitely something I'd think of doing again. I learned so much today!
Thank you so much to JayRoc and G'em for giving up their time to do this!

Thanks so much G'em and JayRoc, especially for not making me feel bad for being such a weakling! It was really great, I learnt loads, had lots of fun and definitely won't be afraid of weights anymore.

Thanks a million Gem and JayRoc, today was fantastic, really really appreciate all your help.
Surprisingly I feel ok right now, but I'm sure once I move off the couch I'll be in bits!!!

Now I'm off to train my shoulders to stay back..:D

REALLY, REALLY enjoyed this today!! So much so that I can't wait to get into the gym tomorrow and give it a try!!!

I do 'machine weights' by myself regularly but I absolutely loved the freedom/motion of the lifts we did today. What's hilarously funny is that a gym instructor gave me a programme to do two weeks ago and in it I was squatting with 6kg dumbells...a teeny tiny bit different to the weight we used today :D:D:D

For anyone reading the thread who hasnt had the pleasure of going to the workshop yet, I'd definitely put my name down for the next one whenever it happens and make the effort to get to it, DEFINITELY worth it!

Thanks a million G'em and JayRoc!!!

Thanks a million G'em and JayRoc, it was only fabulous!
Although you know that part where you said we'd be cursing you tomorrow?? I'd like to start that early iif I may.... *shakes fist exceptionally weakly*..... :)
And ladies, it was fantastic to meet you all and put faces and names to usernames if that makes any sense???

Now to hit the gym tomorrow or Tuesday and commence my gym snobbery proper :p

oh and completely OT, but one of you lovely ladies was wearing a fantastic tee shirt with all these dinosaurs (i think) on it? If it's possible could you let me know where you got it?

Ahaha that was the only clean t-shirt I had!

I got it in New Look ages ago, I think they're all gone :(

    I loves my dinosaurs! :)

Thanks a mill to G'em and JayRoc for the awesome introduction training to weights. It was really beneficial to have the one on one training for posture, stances, form, etc.

Feeling the effects of it already. Body is weak and tired, has me lying in the bed early! Glad I do not have work tommorrow :)

Once again big congrats are in order, everyone did a smashing job and it was a pleasure for both myself and g'em to be there. The time flew by and some cracking lifts went up today.
    Well done all!

Go back to said gym instructor, and throw said 6kg dumbells at them. :D
I hope if nothing else, that you guys came away from today relieved of the annoying misconception that girls should stick to ridiculously light weights (okay, you should have come away with a good dose of gym snobbery too!).
I know a lot of women whose handbags probably weigh six kilos and they have no problem carting it around all day ;)

    Gym snobbery, excellent....

This is why I enjoy doing these sessions.
You wouldn't get the above question if it'd been a bunch of blokes out there today :D
They just would've bored me to tears banging on about the world cup...

Ah knew I meant to ask yis something else, I have a good lot of weights at home, so I was hoping to do mostly home workouts. Obviously I don't have a squat rack so I can't get under the bigger weights to squat them.
What would you suggest to do squat wise instead?

And the Dino -shirt was class....:D

You've a few options: get himself to show you Zercher Squats or old-school BB Hack Squats. Neither of them requires having the bar on your back and they don't need nearly as much weight to be challenging.
Or else you could just clean the bar up to your shoulders and front squat it with an Oly grip, but this means you'll be restricted to squatting just what you can clean. Plus it tends to really take it out of you, to be honest!

DB front squats might also be a good bet.

Morning gils, hope the arses aren't too sore today :D I'm SO delighted you all had such a good time, like JayRoc said it really was a pleasure for us. And once again we were blown away by the standard you guys all brought to the gym floor, it's another kick in hte balls to the old myth that girls aren't strong/ can't lift.

So well done everyone, and I hope this is just the start of many illustrious lifting journeys for you!!

So jealous girls ..... I'm first in line for the next one (if you still have the patience!!!)

Well, after feeling mega confident by the end of the workshop yesterday I decided to grab the bull by the horns and get to the gym this morning to try out the lifts before I started to get nervous about them.

YAY!! walked straight into the weights area, found my new found friend, the squat rack and just started practising the three lifts from yesterday :):)

Funny thing is, I thought I'd get some stares, but no one even batted an eyelid.

I think I've found my new hobby! Onwards and upwards from here!
So thanks again G'em and Jayroc

    Hi all,

Only getting on a computer now. Thanks a million g'em and JayRoc for yesterday. You both put everyone at ease in a place that can be quite scary. I feel confident to go into the gym tomorrow and get the bar bouncing off the rack. I'll hopefully make loads of noise too. I shall aim for 158kg..some day! You inspire me g'em. :)

Was great to meet all the girls too. High five gymfreak for getting stuck into it already.

Question about the weights - JayRoc, can you tell me what weights we lifted with you for each exercise?

Am I the only one who has trouble sitting down and standing up today?

I'm in fierce bad shape :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

I thought I was okay earlier. Just a bit of back and rib cage pain but I'm now feeling it in the hamstrings and calves. Surprisingly my quads are pain free. Must be those hip flexor stretches. :D

I was ok until I went to aerobics a lunch, even my arms were on fire afterwards, a good soak in the bath helped..:D

I'm not too bad except when I have to climb stairs. Stairs are evil :(

I'm pain free but shattered tired. Work was LOOOOOONG today and I was only in for 4 hours!! I did notice I was full of vim this morning, when I woke up though, was exceptionally peppy for the first hour in work, definitely a first :D Also eating myself out of house and home...:o

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to jayroc and g'em for running another highly successful session. And high fives all round to those of you who took part, it was great to see you all kicking a$$ in the power rack!

I hope you'll all take what you learnt and go forward to conquer barbells all over the country, and for those of you who couldn't make it but have read the threads I hope the feedback will inspire you to get involved in weightlifting yourself, you wont regret it :)

This is perfect evidence of the massive effect resistance training has on a person's metabolism, and one of the reasons this type of exercise is SO effective for fat loss.

Well, across the group, you were squatting anywhere between 17kg and 30kg, Push-pressing 17-20kg, and Deadlifting from 30kg to a whopping 50kg in one or two cases.

Kettlebell work was done using 12kg and 16kg 'bells.

    Hope this helps.

Well after a busy week and well, mainly putting it off I was back in the gym today and did deadlifts and squats.

To be honest, I nervous going into the weight area so I asked thee nicest instructor in the gym (she's fab!) just to show me how to do squats at the rack. I didn't want to look like an eeejit looking for the right bar and weights etc. So she gave me a hand. She also gave me some other exercises I could do with free weights.

I feel brilliant after it and proud of myself for doing it. I came home and stuffed my face too! Makes you soooo hungry. I ate well though. :pac:

So just for the other girls who were at the session on Sunday and might be a bit nervous doing it on their own, just ask for help and you'll be flying in no time!
