We had a substantial claim against our house insurance last year. The claim was the fault of a tradesman who worked in our house and left a cupling loose on a pipe. As a result we suffered a lot of damage to the house and garden. The insurance assessor advised us to go through our own insurance and then our insurance company would counter claim form the plumber. However, we got our renewal last week and it is now 3 times higher than last year. when we questioned them they said they never claimed off the plumber so thats why our policy is so high. Surely this is wrong? Where do I go with this?

It should never have gone through your insurance if it was not your fault.

Make a complaint directly to your insurance company and wait for their final response. If this response is not to your liking then bring it to the ombudsman.

did you ask your insurance company why they didn't pursue the plumber's insurance?

It is a right of your insurer, not an obligation, to claim back from the tradesman. Very sloppy that they didn't try but it's your problem at the end of the day. You made a claim, they paid out and there is now a claims experience loading.

I know it sounds harsh but the only way to have avoided this is for you to have claimed against the tradesmans public liability policy in the first instance
