Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That's very very vague. What kind of camera do you want? Compact, bridge, DSLR? How much do you want to spend? What kind of photos do you want to take?

Argos sell a whole diverse range of makes and models of cameras, you'll have to be more specific.

The only reason to buy from argos is convenience. I wouldn't recommend buying any kind of electronics from them. There are better cameras out there than what Argos stock, most of their models would have been updated. You're much better off going to a specialist camera store. While it might not always be the case, some of them have very knowledgeable staff that can recommend a camera to suit you, they will usually be cheaper, and the aftersales service (if you need it) will generally be better.

Argos are expensive in terms of photographic stuff. Convenient though...

Argos don't make cameras. They sell cameras made by Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.
Their prices have become much more competitive lately. I bought a DSLR in
Argos this year because they were actually cheaper than on-line sellers
like Dabs and Pixmania and not a lot more expensive than eBay when
shipping charges were taken into account. Any time I have checked, Argos
DSLR prices were much cheaper than the other local camera shops
namely: Harvey Norman, O'Learys, Spectra (now closed) and McSweeneys.
Sometimes by more than €100 for a single item! Argos Ireland have a very
limited range of cameras and lenses compared to Argos UK.

In fairness to smaller local camera shops, you should always go and
ask them for a price before you buy from the Mega-Lo-Mart. Sometimes
they will give a substantial discount if you do a bit of arm twisting.

Do you want one thats going to fit in your pocket? Or do you want something more advanced? Budget?

something around 500 mark. it does have too one that goes my pocket. i can use my mothers lumix dmc-tz3

Argos prices are reasonable enough for entry level dslrs. You can get a nikon D3000 w/kit lens for €420. Not bad at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

If you're willing to spend as much as that, you'd be better off going to a proper photography store, or even online. You're into the price bracket of cameras like the Powershot G11 if you specifically want a contact and are willing to spend as much as that.

Pretty sure he meant he didn't need it to fit in his pocket, as he can borrow his Mother's cam? Maybe he/she can verify before anymore recommendations?

For €500 you could have the D3000/kit lens and put the rest to a nice 50mm. Or a decent camera bag.

Nothing wrong with buying in Argos if you're sure what you want and the price is reasonable

    ya i meant i don't need a pocket camera. i wouldn't mindone with a lens

Ah, I misunderstood. I'd agree with Cagey then, that'd be a nice little kit to get going with.
It'd be worth checking Adverts too, there's some great bargains there.

I got my D3000 in Argos a few months ago. It was €420 at the time, the same kit in Harvey Norman and any specialist camera store in Limerick was €579

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Thecageyone

It's still up on their site for that price [€419] , with €60 off [was €479]

    €323.99 if you fancy a Sony A230.

That's the sort of price variation I see in Cork. I'm not complaining,
it would be much worse if all shops were the same price. However,
shops with very high prices will often catch out the unwary or the
enthusiastic newbie. Always check prices on the High Street and
on-line before you buy. Sometimes you might decide to pay a bit
extra for the convenience of buying locally, but it is always nice to
know the price of things in the real world before you buy.

    Just wondering -

Do Argos allow you to have a good feel of the camera in your hands before you decide to buy it?

cameras with lenses are quite a specialist niche.

I don't think so. It's locked away out the back somewhere. This is one
big reason for going to a proper camera shop. Argos sometimes have
cameras in a display case. I suppose you could ask if you could have
a look at one. The local Argos only has basic point-&-shoot cameras
on display. DSLRs are boxed and well hidden.

PC World have the cameras out where you can get at them, but they
usually leave the lenses off DSLRs. Currys will let you have a look
at the demo cameras on the shelf and take a few shots.

if you ask the customer service desk to see the item before you buy it they will usually bring it out and let you play with it. they have unboxed stuff for me before. but id only usually ask if I was fairly confident that id buy it. dont want to act like a total jerk.

I too have been browsing argos... looking for something cheap and cheerful yet relatively sound, which produces decent quality photos, just want to carry it around in pocket etc

Can sadly only afford for 70 - 100 euro.... the cheaper the better :(

Only need is a lith-ion battery, last camera chomped through AA's.

    Could anyone recommend one???

Just to answer the other question. The girls in Argos were very good when i was buying my camera. I asked could i have a look at it as i would be buying it unless it fell apart in my hands. They unboxed it, told me to play with it as much as i wanted.

Some of the Fujifilm and Panasonic point&shoot cameras have a
rechargeable battery pack. Have a look on argos.ie The Fujifilm J32
might be worth a look. They have a good offer on the Canon A480
at the moment, although it takes two AA cells.

Canon Ixus 95IS. It's £100 on Amazon at the moment so it might be a little over your budget. A mate has one and it produces really nice pics.

argos are selling this nikon D3000 for 420. don't think it has the lens kit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Thecageyone
