Spare Time in Galway

This summer I have found myself with a lot of spare time during the week, causing some amount of boredom.

What hobbies/activities could I take up in the city that would be either free or relatively inexpensive?

My username has nothing to do with my question - perhaps people would learn to not be so smartarsed and actually answer properly.

Not really interested in fishing as such. Volunteer work, maybe - I'll look into that one. Any other suggestions? I'm sure a lot of people have found themselves with free time as well and would be looking for things too.

Start a new hobby, what type of work experiance do you have, try and contact a work palce that is something your intrested in and offer to work for free to gain experiance. I knowa fwe people who have done this and after a few weeks the company finds some extra cash for them.

Play some computer games, get into a mmo that will sure free up some of your time.

Go walking around galway join clubs or societies. Volunteer is already mentioned.

If all else fails try and fix your laptop?

brokenlaptop>>> If you can afford it, sign up for a summer course of some sort on a subject that is "out of your comfort zone" - it makes life a bit interesting.

    That or

Experiment with making bread / ice cream / other food

Plant a tree like a pear tree or something

Brokenlaptop relax, people are only trying to have a bit of craic!

Maybe try learn a few new skills.. ie circus skills, cookery, gardening, sense of humor :p

Find out if there is anyone local that sets up sport teams.. football.. softball etc! Check out the noticeboards at your local supermarket or gym!

Also as mentioned volunteering would be great way to spend some free time.

I was actually thinking about getting a bonsai tree - anyone know where I may be able to purchase one and around how much might they be?

Good thinking with the summer course - it's always great to gain new knowledge. I also have an interest in taking up a form of dancing - anyone have any info on dance classes? Would be a fantastic way to get fit.

Admit it, the Bonsai tree thing deep deep down comes from watching Karate Kid doesn't it? :-)

Another thing I tought of is Kayaking, that makes you fit if anything, or kite-surfing. Go down to the boatclub / harbour and check if there is any sail boat or something going out for a spin and see if you can tag along.

If you are cool with excercise on your own, take up running or start going to the gym if you don't already. Make a diary of your progress and it will be a project that takes not too much of your time and makes you really fit, you can make serious progress over the summer. Make sure you buy new proper gear before you start because then you "do" something to kick off.

Dancing - never done it (classes) but they have salsa classes on top of bar 903, I have watched them dance on Mondays to that band in Bar 903, looks proper fun.

Power kiting, stunt kiting, rc helicopters, rc cars, mountain biking, road biking, cinema, chilling out in Eyre square on a nice day.

Noway.. power kiting sounds like fun! Now what the hell is it exactly haha? I'm imagining some sort of a kite with a motor that makes you fly

Kudos to the RC stuff.. they're always fun.. does that magicy shop in eyre square shopping centre still do them?

No that's powered gliding your thinking off. Power kites are big kites that you fly in the air. There called powerkites because they are capable of generating lots of power to pull you around on a board with wheels or a buggy. You can also do jumps. Type powerkiting into you tube.

The RC stuff you would get in that magic shop or any toy shop would be rubbish. No great challenge in learning so you would get bored easily. Also if you crash them they are not modulated in design so you cannot replace parts when they break and they will break.

You need proper RC equipment - a good starter for RC heli's is a Trex 450 or a Blade 400 I think it's called - there cheaper. All parts are replacable and they are a serious challenge to learn how to fly. Thus they maintain your interest. There is an RC heli club in Galway which I am planning to join as I've only started the hobby myself.

All the above info applies to RC cars aswell. There is an RC car shop in Liosban in Galway. Your talking about 350 to buy a beginners one - they are fast and strong. The guy there sells Kyoshos which are very reliable in my experience. They meetup on Saturdays to race in a track out the Dublin road. I've been driving these cars for a while but I haven't joined the club yet - planning on though.

Back to your interest in powered gliding though - paragliding and hang gliding are activites that can be done around the West coast. I'm planning on doing a hang gliding course this month to get started!

Oooh that!! Yeah saw it on tv before.. looks like good craic alrite! We have the wind for it on the coast anyways.

You just killed a childhood dream.. I haven't been in there since I was a kid, now I'm living in Galway I was going to treat myself. :(
I bought this RC hawk before.. it was class! Lost it though!

Nice one, I've been trying to organise a parachute jump this summer but would love to try out all that sort of stuff aswell! Shame the kinda places that do these things are unaccessable to us that use our feet for transport!

    What else do you do?

I think there the main things. Powerkiting should be accessible to you - People do that down around the Claddagh in that park. A starter kite like a HQ beamer should be able to get for about 200 I think. http://www.powerkiteshop.com/kites/hqbeamerii.htm A 3 metre would be good for starting out. I need to start going out with mine in Galway - I've not got into it properly yet - I'm kind of only starting out in most of the stuff I've mentioned - trying to shape my life and all that. :) Waiting for my kite to come back from repair after being torn and might go out then.

Not sure about hang gliding or anything because it's really expensive to buy kit - couple of grand like. I get the impression you are in college or something in Galway is it?

While the RC model you bought in that magic shop might have unreal memories for you as a kid I'd imagine you'd get pretty bored of it quickly if your grown up. Look up Trex 450 there on you tube aswell.

Ah nice one will keep a look out for them and see what it's all about really. Yeah me too I guess, I've always had an interest in that kinda stuff just never bothered doing something about it, also moving down here kinda helps as there is feck all to do in the midlands.

I'm not in college, but I wouldn't exactly be able to afford something that is a couple of grand. :p

I'd love to try going on a surfboard with a kite, I'd say that would be some rush! Probably would be cheaper than trying to organise a buggy aswell!

Hehe I had it broken in like a week, was always trying to make it go over ramps and down stairs.. so I only have good memories of it! :)

Jesus the noise of that thing, looks like it's impossible to control. I'd say that would be an expensive crash.. I wouldn't trust myself!
    So what RCs have you?

Okaaaay... scrap that, kite surfing is going to cost a bomb! But think i'll save up for it anyways, really think I'd enjoy it. Do you think the winds out in Salthill would be strong enough?

Lol I'm down in the midlands today. But I have no clue about this sport and how windy you would need it to be. :p

I've seen it done on what one would think were relatively "calm" conditions. I dont think you need a big amount of wind, in fact I would suggest that its easier to learn in less windy conditions. Its gusting around 30mph today and pretty breezy round Galway.

Kitesurfing would be better around Galway because there are no proper places to do buggying or landboarding - people do it (landboarding anyway I think) but you need to travel to get to some proper locations. Kitesurfing is done just a few miles out the Barna road. However kitesurfing kites are much more expensive! You would need lessons aswell before doing any surfing with them I'd say - you could get away without lessons on land but there still dangerous - they could pull you off your feet easily. Good to start of with a fairly non-aggressive one. I sound like an expert the way I'm going on and I haven't really got that much experience myself.

I've got a HQ Beamer III 3 meter land kite. I also bought a Flexifoil Blade 4.9 meter (http://www.powerkiteshop.com/flexifoil-blade-4-IV-kite.htm) because I wanted to start jumping. Posted the link up there because I lover the colours and design of it!!! This kite is nicknamed the Widow maker! Serious power and lift. I'm going to wait to start practicing with some more experienced people before I start using it I'd say. That's my opinion anyway after bringing it out once or twice already. Lets just say it wasn't much fun!

Regarding the RC you had when younger - False economics it would be if it broke too soon again and you had to buy another one. Best off investing in quality is usually my way of thinking.

Are you referring to the noise of the Trex 450? Yes they make noise  - they are cool machines but they do cost a nice bit to repair when you crash unfortunately. On the plus side when you improve they shouldn't crash as much. You need to build up a nice repertoire of spare parts really unless you want to wait for the postman everytime something small breaks. I don't think there is anywhere in Galway that sells heli spares.

Starting off though you can/should use an RC flight simulator such as Realflight. You get a controller that is very similar to one you would use when flying a real heli and the software mimics real flying as close as possible to the real thing. You can learn, test and practice all sorts of maneuvers and early learning basics with it before trying it out on the real thing. Should save some crash fees.

What RC's do I have? I've got a Kyosho inferno MP7.5 nitro buggy - this was a beginner buggy that I bought to start racing in the club in Galway. Havn't started doing that yet though but I regularly spin around at home with it.

I also have a Ofna X1-CRT nitro truggy. Weapon of a machine this - great fun. Brought it to a quarry near where my home home place is a few weekends ago and was doing jumps a couple of feet into the air with it - great rush. This truggy works great on grass and most areas - the buggy sits lower to the ground so is more suited to tarmac or the likes of the track they race on here in Galway. Both of these machines use Nitro fuel which is like petrol expect more explosive. Petrol does not work in really small engines like these RC vehicles use.

Regarding helicopters then - I have the Trex 450 obviously and a Trex 600 which is sitting for the time being while I get to grips with my flying skills better. The 600 is much more expensive to repair than the 450 you see. I can get a set of rotor blades (usually guaranteed to break if you crash) for the 450 for about 10 euro I think while the 600 blades cost 5 times that. That means a minimum repair cost of 50 euro on the 600.

I'm also in the process of building a plane - I can't wait to fly it but I dunno if I'm ever gonna get around to finishing it at this rate. Need to draw up a completion plan and just do it.

Actually I have one other RC car - much bigger than the others - a Baja 5B clone. Really big petrol yoke - parts are expensive but it's class to drive. http://www.modelflight.com.au/hpi_racing/hpi_images/hpi_baja_5b_b1.jpg

What are you up to in Galway yourself?

What are you up to in Galway yourself?

Yeah I would imagine so, it would suit me more anyways. Plus it looks like more fun in my opinion! I noticed the extra expense alright.. I was hoping to be able to do it with something like this....
    http://www.powerkiteshop.com/hq-symphony-beach-2-line-power-kite.htm

But as mentioned you need a C shape kite for surfing. I would give my left arm for this board though.....
    http://www.powerkiteshop.com/crazyfly-crazy-fly-mutant-kiteboard.htm
Looks awesome but my god is it pricey! Is there an Irish website selling similar stuff at all? I reckon delivery prices wouldn't be much fun either.

Yeah that kite looks pretty sweet alright! I'd say you're covered in bruises haha! At least though you could use in a range of different ways, well you'd want to be able to for that price hehe.

You mention the danger but don't they come with an emergency type cord, that would make it drop out of the sky? But obviously you would still need some sort of training for a more enjoyable safe experiance.

Hmm I don't have that much of an interest to part with 450 cash for an RC helicopter.. even though it is awesome. I think the kite surfing will just have to satisfy me for now hehe!

Haha that Ofna buggy looks badass! Holy cow.. do you rob banks for a living lol? The price of that hobby dude! I think I'll just stick to kite surfing and cliff jumping for now hehe!

So you reckon I could just bring my kite and board to Salthill and enjoy hours of fun? I'd be delighted with that like.

Only moved down last friday, so trying to get a good feel for the place and what I can do here. Definitely want to broaden my extreme spots horizans anyways! Taking a bit of a career break at the moment aswell, just for the summer. Just want to enjoy life a little for a while. :)

    What about yourself?
