Schalke 04 have got a 40m euro bail out from the lander government

    https://www.t-online.de/sport/fussball/bundesliga/id_88301862/fc-schalke-04-erhaelt-jetzt-buergschaft-vom-staat-wegen-hoher-schulden-.html

The S04 applied for this guarantee in the expectation that the decision would not be treated differently from commercial companies from other areas," said S04. The traditional club is aware of the responsibility associated with such a guarantee.

Presumably they sought a bank loan of some description first, if they weren't deemed a viable client then this has to be considered questionable.

Weren't Schalke €200m in debt before the virus struck? No way they're getting a commercial loan under current conditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭MD1990

Schalke will sell players probably Kabak & McKennie to some team in the PL.

    They'll be relegation contenders.

They aren't being bailed out by the NRW state government. The state is acting as a guarantor so they can receive the bank loan. Many other German sides are in the same boat as them.

Stuttgart and Werder have applied for loans as well as several clubs in lower divisions.

If you can't get promoted fairly then you'll eventually turn to cheating.

just fresh off the presses, therell be no spectators at Bundesliga games till the end of October at the earliest and there'll be no regional exceptions either.

This will hit clubs badly, for example FC Köln reckon they take in 1.7 million per home game, but on the positive side I suppose theres now a certainty to work plans around for the next couple of months rather than hanging on an ever decreasing hope.

It was mentioned too at the press conference (Angie and Söder and some other guy, I think from Hamburg) that allowing spectators at football games would be a signal that would be pounced upon by any and every other grouping looking for lockdown easing during this time of rising numbers, so it does look like the numbers will need to be good so that football, along with other spectator events, can be allowed to go ahead

We were embarrassingly bad in the Pokal tonight against Dresden, but the evening was saved when Toni Leistner climbed into the stand to attack a Dresden gimp talking s*it about Leistner's pregnant wife while he was being interviewed beside the stand. I wish he knocked him out. :D

Well his pregnant wife will have plenty of help with night feeds because that looks like a 9 month holiday for her husband.

For reacting to a fan saying he hopes his wife has a miscarriage? Nah. He'll probably get fined and maybe banned for a few games.

Dresden already apologised to him and have said they will be banning the fan.

The video from in the stand is better. The guy sh*ts himself when he sees Leistner coming and tries to hide.

Fans think they can say whatever they want and players just have to take it. I wish more did what Leistner done.

God Bayern are a joy to watch, 7-0 with time left. The one touch passing around the box has been exceptional in this game, very early days but who can stop them in any competition this year? Thiago is a great player but not sure they will suffer too much if Pavard is fit allowing Kimmich to slot into the midfield, not like for like but probably a better player than Thiago?

    Thiago who?

Best team in Europe starting where they left off

Sane has improved them....already looks a very clever signging.
We will see if they can keep it up all season, on all fronts after such as short off season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

Bayern are fantastic but 8-0 is a bit of a depressing outlook for the rest of the Bundesliga season.
Schalke ended the second half of last season in dreadful form and begin it in much of the same way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭Irishmale0399

Will Wagner see the 4 game of the season is the big question. Huub Stevens to come of the Supervisory Board to take over and stabilise things I would expect.

Schalke are a huge team but it just hasn’t come together for them in a long time, need to rethink the direction they want to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Sane was back to his best and has taken them up a gear. They don't look like they will be stopped in the Bundesliga and it will be tough to stop them retaining the CL too. This was like a firing shot to the rest of the continent.

Hasn't come together? That's an understatement. They're one of the worst run clubs in the BL. Have a read of this https://www.dw.com/en/the-schalke-slaughterhouse-furious-fans-demand-change-after-season-of-scandal/a-53967463

Tonnies has at least gone since that article was written.

Schalkes biggest problem is they had a dream in the form of their new stadium. In a city which has one of the biggest unemployment levels in Germany, the club and city went on a wild bender to find money to build the Veltins Arena. That has resulted in the club being up to their eyeballs in debt, the real level of which is unknown as the debt is hidden in private loans from daughter companies of the city.
Add to that Tonnies (Germanys Larry Goodman)...who loaned the club as much money as they needed when they were regulary on the bring and made them financially dependant on him. If certain groups kicked he told them he would call in the loans.....this is how he has kept power. He has since left the board, however he is very much still involved in the day to day running of the club. He was in the stand at last nights game....sitting with the Schalke management, something which didnt go down well with the Ultras.
All in all Schalke is a basket case......

Really the more surprising bit was that he was allowed start this season.

Bad management will do that. Everyone knew there was no way he was the right man yet they let him stay and have now f*cked up the start of what is one of the biggest seasons in their history.

Reminds me of 2011 when HSV sacked Armin Veh near the end of the season and promoted Michael Oenning to coach. He wasn't very good and should have been let go at the end of the season, but they gave him the job permanently the same summer we lost cornerstones of the squad like Frank Rost, Ze Roberto, Guy Demel, Ruud and Joris Mathijsen. He was unsurprisingly sacked 4 or 5 games into the new season and the whole affair almost got us relegated that year.

It was actually Thorsten Fink that we hired to replace Oenning that season and he managed to keep us up. Funnily enough, Fink left Vissel Kobe to return home last week so he's available if Schalke wanted him..

Hoffenheim 4-1 Bayern. Could have been more.

Hoffenheim destroyed that high line from Bayern.

He has started very slowly. Looking very average in the first 2 games, had the pleasure of seeing him live last Sunday against BMG and he was not chasing things down off the ball. Big difference to last season, we can only hope he is trying to get into his grove.

The lead up to the penalty is a thing of beauty, well maybe not for Bayern fans.

Watching the Supercup on ESPN+ and I really like the formation tracking graphic they are using to see how the players move around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,369 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

The Supercup has to be the most pointless match in football. Nobody asked for it or wants it. It has no history and is a chore to watch and for players to play in.

Funny how Sky were the ones who campaigned for it to be introduced and have now lost the rights to show it. It's right up there with 'Der Klassiker' as their stupidest contribution to German football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

That was some finish by Kimmich on the ground. :pac: 3-2 Bayern with 5 minutes left.

Bibiana Steinhaus is retiring from refereeing now. The Supercup was her last match.

Can't say I remember her having a bad game that I watched. Same can't be said for just about every other ref unfortunately.

Wasn’t it the league cup at one stage, played as a very quick preseason competition with a Limited number of teams

If they did that then it would be fairly good, they are all playing meaningless friendly games anyhow.

It’s a pity to have the stadium in munich empty yet again when newly all other clubs have some fans, but the infection numbers are dropping like a stone so there may be a last minute permission issued for the game against Herta on Sunday evening.

Anyhow, that’s title number 5 for Bayern, number 6 can be won at the world club championships in December!

Who would have thought it last November when Bayern were lucky to only loose 5-1 in Frankfurt!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Great to see the Bundesliga is now putting highlights of all the matches on Youtube during the weekend.

That was a nice story with Bielefeld's Edmundsson coming off the bench as the first player to play in the league from the Faroe Islands and then grabbing the winner.

Bit of a coup for us signing Ulreich from Bayern. He could easily start for most BL clubs but nobody has a starting spot available at the minute.

Another double so far for Haaland. Going to be so interesting to see how long he lasts at Dortmund. He is just a goal machine.

A hat trick for 17 year Gio Reyna. Maybe they both end up at their fathers ex club of Man City!! Unfortunately

Manuel Baum has some task on his hands turning things around for Schalke. At least he has the international break after this to implement some sort of system.

Yes it was. I think it was called the Ligapokal or the Liga Total Cup or something like that. It was better because people knew what it was: A preseason tournament. They brought it back as the 'Supercup' and have attempted to make it a real thing people should care about, like Sky and the 'Der Klassiker' stuff. That's why they couldn't just cancel it. It would lose the little credibility it has if they just forgot about it for a year.

Alphonso Davies taken off in tears in the opening minutes against Eintracht after twisting his ankle. Hopefully it won't turn out as bad as it appears.

Not impacting Bayern anyway as Lewandowski has them ahead.

Really don't get why the Stuttgart player was booked for wasting time then booting the ball in the goal.

It's poor form from him but a yellow card is ridiculous

Double standards in the game showing again. He was well within his right to waste some injury time when nobody was closing him down, the same way keepers do it by holding the ball at their feet until a striker closes them down.

If I was him/the club I would be filing a complaint. There's no way that should be a card.

Schalke were 2-1 up away to Augsburg. They were playing against 10 men. It was the 93rd minute...

..And they throw it away. Richter equalises and they are now 27 games without a win.

I like Favre but he was on thin ice. The real tragedy was the missed opportunity to take the title in his first season. It was there for the taking.

Who's the favourite to succeed him? Hasenhuttl?

Marco Rose apparently. He has a release clause they can activate in the summer.
