I have a new phone (Nokia e52 from O2 with NO installation cd). I downloaded NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en version 2.2.0.0.

    When I run the installer, it fail's and list's 5 possible option's:

    1. Please make sure your firewall and anti-virus software settings allow Nokia Software Updater to function.
The Nokia Software Updater applications can be launched separately, connecting directly to the Nokia servers. If there is a firewall between the Nokia Software Updater application and Nokia's servers, the firewall needs to be configured as follows:
    • Port 62716 over TCP: Used for communication between Nokia Software Updater and Nokia Services servers.
    • Application nsl_host_process.exe: Used for connection between Nokia Software Updater and Nokia Services servers.

    2. Check whether the ports used by NSU are in use by other applications.
Nokia Software Updater uses port 62716 over TCP. You can perform a port scan on machines, specifying predefined port ranges. One port scanning application is FreePortScanner, which you can download by following this link. This tool uses TCP packets to identify available hosts and open ports, services associated with these ports, and other important characteristics.
    1. Step 1: Close Nokia Software Updater.
    2. Step 2: Run the FreePortScanner application.
    3. Step 3: Specify the following scan parameters:
    1. In the IP Address field, type the localhost address 127.0.0.1
    2. Make sure Show Closed Port is not ticked
    3. In TCP Ports, enter the range 62700 - 62750
    4. Step 4: Press the Scan button.

You will be provided with a list of all open port numbers on your machine.
If port 62716 is being used by another application, you should change the port number to range 62700 to 62750.
    • Step 1: Click Start, selecting Run.
    • Step 2: When the Run dialog box appears, type \Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Service Layer\A and press the OK button or ENTER on your keyboard.
    • Step 3: Edit the file nsl_config.cfg in Notepad.
    • Step 4: Replace 62716 in the line <root_port>62716</root_port> with an unused port number from the range 62700 to 62750.
    • Step 5: Save your changes and close the file.

    Start Nokia Software Updater.

    3. Disable network connection sharing (administrator rights required).
    • Step 1: Click Start in the taskbar and go to Control Panel.
    • Step 2: Click Network Connections. In the new window that opens, select your network connection. This can be a dial-up, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), or cable broadband connection. Right-click your network connection's icon, scroll down, and click Properties. Then click on the Advanced tab.
    • Step 3: Untick the box next to Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection, in the Internet Connection Sharing section.
    • Step 4: Click OK > OK to close the Control Panel window.

    4. Reinstall the Nokia Software Updater application.

    5. Search the NSU forum pages, if necessary.
If these solutions didn't help, please consult the Nokia Support Discussions Board and Phone Software Update FAQ pages, where you can find additional information related to Nokia Software Updater and phone software updates.

Not sure about 1 as I don't think I have a firewall, just running AVG free.

Tried 2 but the FreePortScanner program won't report anything.

Anything I'm missing for point 2?

    Any other suggestions?

    Sorry for the long post.

    Have zone alarm running.

However, FreePortScanner is working, when I click to show closed ports, all within the range show as closed, while unchecking it shows nothing.

So what ports can i use for the installation to work?

Found this option eventually. Still not completing installation.
