    Heya!

    I'm a German student currently studying abroad in Dublin. Because upc is not available in my apartment (there is an upc tv box though) and eircom is charging an extremely lot of money (because of line rental + broadband crap) I hooked up with Imagine WiMax.
    So far, the connection speed fluctuates a lot. I keep an eye on that.
    Currently it's at:

    1505876590.png
    with
    pingtestu79s.jpg

    I got the 7 Mb package so that's awful. Two hours ago the speed was at 4 Mb. I don't think I'll get maximum speed here in Dublin (7).

    /e
    The HUB got all 4 lights on btw so best connection.
    /e²
    After turning off Steam (haha), I got this:

    Not much better...

    Three is like a floating gassy corpse this past week, south Dublin.

    Google services very ropey, along with local sites like boards.ie. Sites that use Amazon hosting or off site comment management are not working properly either.

    ===

    I can't load the speedtest website.

    ===

    Prepaid. I feel like I should have burned the money instead..

    Almost 4am, should be off-peak

    Think that's the best to expect from Imagine in Dublin.

    Im having problems accessing certain webpages like fantasy.premierleague.com and a few others. did a bit of trial and error and it seems the public ips that three have starting in 92.XXX are causing all this (never used to before). It was rectified partially by switching to the 178.XX private ips but the speeds on that ip set are rubbish and to top it all off they are set as strict nat to boot.

    Any similar experiences?

    three need to get their act in gear :mad:

    Easy answer to the fantasy.premierleague.com issue is that they have ICMP replies switched off on their firewall and I bet you are using a B260a or a Dovado router, that hardware on the 3 network hits issues with sites that don't respond to ICMP requests that are used by the client PC to work out the best MTU size.

    You can use ping and the don't fragment switch but Sponge Bob sent me this link a while back for TCP Optimiser at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php which makes Largest MTU testing a lot easier. If the Largest MTU it recommends is not 1412 then thats when you have problems.

    I gave up today.

    Boxed my Dovado 4GR and dug out my Huawei E585 and stuck it up against the window. I'll find a way to DD-WRT the E585 signal to the rest of the house, mooching about for a Router at the moment..

    1511611481.png

    Happy enough with that, normal browsing and email.

    There seems to be an extra layer of FUD & Fiddling going on at Three, because with congestion, sites eventually work, but from the various threads here and on the Ask Three forum (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1367), things just seem to be 'broken', for a group of customers dotted around Ireland, with somewhat similar symptoms.

    Woeful http issues for the past week, eBay, Google, Amazon. No response.

    I had a service that often topped 400 kb\sec, but that hit a wall with the introduction of the iPhone\All you can eat offers.

    Used to work perfectly until yesterday and then alot of main sites would not load so they must have altered some form of configuration on the network end. i use 3internet due to its open nat. the MTU has never been an issue for me before. default MTU for a b260a is 1500...

    I tested 1412, 1464 and 1472 MTU with the router but with no success. Below is a test with the router @ MTU of 1500

    speedtest.net MTU test below

    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1500 bytes -> ..fragmented
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 750 bytes ->bytes=750 time=212ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1125 bytes ->bytes=1125 time=217ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1312 bytes ->bytes=1312 time=199ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1406 bytes ->bytes=1406 time=199ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1453 bytes ->bytes=1453 time=199ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1476 bytes -> ..fragmented
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1464 bytes ->bytes=1464 time=198ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1470 bytes ->bytes=1470 time=199ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1473 bytes -> ..fragmented
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1471 bytes ->bytes=1471 time=208ms TTL=54
    Pinging [68.67.73.20] with 1472 bytes ->bytes=1472 time=208ms TTL=54
    The largest possible non-fragmented packet is 1472 (1500 - 28 ICMP & IP headers).
    You can set your MTU to 1500

    Tried loading speedtest.net via the browser again and that is not working either. this site has been unavailable since yesterday as well. itv.com and comedycentral.com as well as others.

    here is a temp solution - expat shield gives you an uk ip address - ive tested it personally and it allows you to access the sites you cant at the moment :) ill post this same post on the other two threads so as to give a short term solution for ye folks with issues :)

    http://expatshield.com/

    Please let us know if it helps so as this temp solution is verified - the ads are slightly annoying tho lol

    Thanks for testing

    That all seems very strange, can't test atm as 3 is down yet again (but with the distance to the mast and the fog here its not surprising). Anyway I still have the screen open with my results from yesterday and for 68.67.73.20 (speedtest.net) it comes out as 1412.

    When I tested fantasy.premierleague.com the test responded "The host you've chosen does not accept ICMP Pings" hence my post. Just checked from my ISDN conntection and get the same result. When I test many of the other testable links that have been posted as being problamatic I have had the same results of "does not accept ICMP Pings" from my 3 connection and ISDN connection. Path-MTU-Discovery relies on a specific ICMP feature which is why I think that it may be the root of the issue somehow?

    So the question has to be is your result of 1500 part of the problem or not? I'll test without a router and with the dongle straight in my laptop this afternoon and see if I get any different results.

    btw Testing my local network client to the 3G router gives 1500 which is what I'd expect.

    OK so my bad about the max MTU tests :o

    I looked up some of my previous tests using a dongle and forgot to add on the packet headers so ICMP+IP headers gives 1412+28=1440 MTU. Thats still 60bytes short of warlikedaves "perfect" result of 1500.

    Anyway just been out and tested with a E220 and a E180 and the MTU result I got from the TCP Optimiser test was "You can set your MTU to 1440"

    Back at home while writing this my connection to 3 using an Edimax router and a E180 gives me the MTU of 1412 which must be something to do with the crappy router however it does work fine and doesn't suffer from the same problems as B260a users have.

    fantasy.premierleague.com still times out no matter how I connect and only occasionally responds to one ping request.

    Cheers Will for the help. The issue seems to be ok now at the moment from my end anyways but due to no change that i did...ive had the same ip for 3 days just to see if any changes occured without me refreshing the ip and connection.

    What kind of signal are you getting @theothers?

    Not sure why its been different for you - the nature of mobile technology is unreliable in its very nature - cheers for all the info about MTU by the way.

    The b260a never gave me any issues to be honest but it seems others are suffering from issues with it. three and other companies need to put proper investment into a standardised 3g sim router. the router with a usb stick port would be a quality product that they could do as well.

    there isnt many 3g routers of note out on the market for the moment :(

    It's 10GB's at the moment. I dont know if there are packages to allow more, maybe an extra 20 quid per month for and extra 10 - 20 would be possible

    Finally managed to get rid of three after having to resort to comreg. Even though I had a 7 day cooling off period under Irish law three didn't see it that way. Biggest shower of cowboys I ever dealt with and will never sign up to them for anything ever again.

    Signed up with meteor this morning and first speed test I did I managed a faster speed then I ever obtained with three even though I was with them for 2 years on different contracts.

    Will have to see what speed is like during peak hours but so far very happy with it.

    I used to be getting 0.02Mbps with three for about 12 hours a day and they kept on telling me their BS for months until I got comreg involved and managed to get out of contract without any fee's.

    I'm now with meteor for the last month and a half and its solid. Never get below 5Mbps download speed and any hour of the day including peak time. Delighted I left three because they are cowboys.
