It's definitely up there however what little I played of Project Zero would also be up there as well. The only other contender would be System Shock 2. There's something unsettling about hiding from your former crew mates that are hunting you down but still have their minds so you can hear them psychically telling you they are sorry every so often and to run away.

Some of my fave PS1 games are:

    Gran Turismo 1 & 2
    Porsche Challenge
    Dancing Stage (series)
    GTA
    GTA London

and some others which I can't think of atm. Yes I do like my racing games and dancing stage :D For a guy that has lots of PS1's I don't have any particularly great games for them :P

Agreed, Dancing Stage sucks. DDR from japan has the better soundtracks, none of that boyzone crap.

Boyzone in a dance game? Not exactly the kind of music to get you pumped up to jump about is it?

What next, Cat Stephens to Street Fighter IV?

That's the actual character select music for Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It's become a bit of an in joke in the fighting game circles. If you watch MvsC2 tournaments they use the dreamcast version of the game but boot legs that have the music hacked out of itand replaced with better music because the music in the game is so bad.

I cant believe this thread has gone on this long and nobody has mentioned Die Hard Trilogy. Its my favourite PS1 game by a country mile, the amount of time I pumped into that game. Good times

I think I remember playing that in a mates, was it a light gun game? Time Crises kind of jobbie?

I think I actually have Colony Wars (could be Vengence, unsure as of now). Have very fond memories of it when I was younger, and still looks great. But my god that intro is pre, unadulterated cheese today.

There was another game I really loved, some kind of alien invasion game. You piloted a ship through various locations on Earth wiping alien ships out. Cockpit view, think it was out on the 3DO too, and had loads of FMV sequences...ring any bells? I remember one mission was in Cairo I think :o

Soul blade - "transcending history and the world" - great opening sequence and game - woka woka

Someone said Die hard trilogy, agree, great game.

Driver 1 was fantastic, first intro of the qualification criteria to proceed into the game, remember the car park driving test? And the presedential run at the end, fantastic stuff.

The early verisons of the syphon filter series.

Die Hard Trilogy has dated terribly. The third person die hard 1 section is awful, the die hard 3 driving is really bad as well and gets very repetitive and the lightgun game is ok but not a patch on Time Crisis.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,890 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I bet you didn't play it for long and won't go back to it. Can't believe you liked the third person sections though, they were terrible when the game was released.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 168 ✭✭justbrian

Another die hard trilogy fan. I still enjoy the first part in the building it's mindless fun. Same for the driving section. Not so mad about the light gun part, as don't like that genre. Overall it's a fun little game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,633 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Like the lightgun section but the on-foot section was always awful.
The driving game was backward even at launch, imho.
I never understood the amount of attention it got, back in the day.

Once again though, the Die Hard 2 light gun scenes were excellent, a nice alternative to the Namco light gun games that kinda had a monopoly on the scene.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,890 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Die Hard Trilogy got great reviews when it came out. 3 games in 1 and it wasn't a bad movie license. It's a game though from the era when 3D gaming was finding it's feet and it really feels like it. the framerate is also criminal if I remember correctly. I thought the driving sections would have remained good fun but the frame rate kind of ruins it and it feels outclassed now by crazy taxi. They are still fun but it gets repetitive after the 3rd stage. It's not bad but it's not great, I'd never call it a classic and I wouldn't recommend it because it's not going toget played other than out of curiosity. Die Hard Trilogy 2 got hammered in reviews though.

Can't beat the best Die Hard game though. I'm sure ciderman loves this one :P

    Oh wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭Scavenger XIII

Saw a friend randomly play some DHT there a month or two back, was hilarious.

The driving section in particular had me in stitches, wanton vehicular manslaughter, nuclear cars, flaming pigeons, what the hell is going on?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,633 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

    Actually, I have that!
    Dynamite Deka isn't it?

You see you "assume" I know nothing....

Don't really mind the evolution of the brawler, I mean I love Batman AA and the likes of Bayonetta, Mark of Kri and so on, just didn't like.....
I don't really want to type them in again,

Batman Returns was great though, I may have mentioned this before....

Some of my favourites on PSone would be:

    Duke Nukem 3D
Doom (can be got with Doom II also on the disc)
    Twisted Metal
    Twisted Metal II World Tour
    Wipeout 2097
Final Fantasy VIII (yip, I said VIII, not VII :P )
    Tomb Raider
    Die Hard trilogy
Worms (only really worth it for multiplayer)
    Bloody Roar II
    Command & Conquer
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater II
    Descent
    Grand Theft Auto
    Tekken II
Time Crisis (only worth playing if you can get your hands on a Gcon45)

Edit: Almost forgot to mention Metal Gear Solid. Still the finest game in the MGS series.

Final Fantasy VIII was one of the biggest let downs I've ever played :(

Such a let down I haven't played it again since release.

Have any of you guys ever played Alundra? I've had it sitting in my collection now for a few years and still haven't played it. From what I remember it's along the lines of Zelda?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,890 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

There's so much wrong with FFVIII. The story, characters and broken battle system are really bad. I still had fun with it though. It's fun. Like FFVII for all it's flaws I can't deny it's a very enjoyable game except in the case of FFVIII there's way more flaws.

O1s1n: Alundra is fantastic, definitely worth playing.

I was just about to post about Alundra.

I bought and played it when it was first released, having saving up for about a month before hand. It's a great game, very like Zelda: LTTP in terms of graphics and gameplay but still a good game in it's own right.

It has a big enough World Map that gradually unlocks as you get more items to break the boulder that was blocking that bridge etc...
There is a lot of secret stuff to go for and I really liked the soundtrack at the time... but I only played it once so can't remember much of it now.

The story is about a chap who can enter people's dreams which made for interesting dungeons/ levels. So yeah it's worth playing.
Also I loved games that came with a free map, which this did :D

btw it never got a sequel. That's right it never got a sequel.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,500 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

btw it never got a sequel. That's right it never got a sequel.

It sure did get a sequel (Alundra 2: A New Legend Begins) but that was a 3D affair so maybe it was worth forgetting (never got around to playing it). Was made by Activision rather than Psygnosis (according to the boxes anyway).

From what I remember of Alundra (The Adventures of) it was well worth a play.

Cheers guys! I'll give it a go after I finish my current run through of LTTP. Taking me a little longer than I remembered. Just the final dungeon to go!

Also have to play Minish Cap though.

Hmmm. Minish Cap on the luas to/from work, Alundra when at home. :D

Ones I loved, but no one mentioned.

Allied/Panzer General: Looked brutal and was already dated at release, but I found it incredibly addictive. If you don't like turn-based point and click war games, jog on.

Rage Racer: Once you figure out the drifting part, this game just gets 2x more fun than it usually is. Best arcade racer on the Playstation.

Jonah Lomu Rugby: This blew the pants off all other rugby games of the day (probably because there weren't that many!), but was still incredibly fun and much different to the usual boring soccer games.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo: Best puzzle game on the Playstation, easily.

Dino Crisis: It's no Resident Evil 2 and admittedly is a rip-off of the series, but I found it a whole lot of fun. Make sure you avoid the crappy sequel though!

Fade to Black: Unforgiving to say the least! The controls were awkward too, but once you got drawn into this game, it was hard to stop.

Formula 1 '97: One of the few games that was able to provide the depth of a Formula 1 simulation, while still being fun to play.

    Chris Kamara's Street Soccer: Joke!

    Ape escape
    Tombi

    You all rememebr tombi right?
    tombi_ps1_01.jpg
The ps1 gave you an extremely long demo of it at the time, but the game get's a whole lot better. There's nothing quite like it. It's basically a psuedo 3d platformer/rpg.

I'll agree with these, all copies of Doom on the PS also has Doom II built in.
    Wipeout 2097 is awesome.
Worms is great fun alright, even in single player though.
Descent is fab, the sequel is as good if not better.
GTA on the PS was a feature of some argument but I also thought it was great.
MGS is, well, MGS, brilliant, I played in japanese and still loved it!

Need For Speed on the system, with the exception of the second one was a great racing series.
    V-Rally was good bouncy fun.
Gran Turismo 2 was a revolution.
But so was Toca Touring Car!
    And so was Driver!

I loved Ace Combat on the PS, played on hard it was excellent.
Assault Rigs also has a special place in my heart.

Fade to Black, the Flashback sequel, I loved that, had it on PC and PS, better on PS, nicer graphics, finished it back in the day.

    Parasite Eve was good too.

Tekken 3 was the most fun I've ever had with a fighter.

F1'97 was the best F1 game I've ever played, can't wait for that to hopefully change with the Codemasters game this september.

I loved it as well but my god has it aged terribly. I think people should avoid this one unless they are willing to look past some very basic 3D, awful controls and frustration.

Parasite Eve never got an EU release but the sequel did.
