Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The next big thing in compact digital cameras?

Reading an article on Wired about using Leica/Canon/Nikon lenses on Sony's Nex3/5 compact digital camera with APS-C (half frame) sensor.

Will it only be a matter of time before somebody brings out a relatively inexpensive compact full-frame camera, with a range of adapters to match? It would be some rival to Leica's M9 and would be my choice of travel camera.

This is an interesting development as the Sony lenses offered with this system appear to leave something to be desired. No auto-focus could be a problem though.

There's a new review of the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 up on Dpreview - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/SonyNex5Nex3/

why would they? where does the extra benefit lie - in a bigger sensor, or in the features foregone in order to get it in at a particular price point?

I would love to own such a camera. It would be a more affordable equivalent to the Leica M9. It would be more inconspicuous than a big DSLR + lens, and perfect for bringing on a night out with friends, or street shooting.

i can understand the appeal of a full frame SLR - but i don't see why a compact is going to be necessarily better for having a full frame sensor, given the extra cost it would entail.

You'd get the image quality of full frame in a compact camera. Low noise performance would be one of the advantages

Or they'll possibly keep sticking more and more of the megapixels onto baby toenail size sensors, cause nothing says buy me like 42 megapixels and 57 xzooms...
