Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi guys,

just looking for a bit of advice regarding a mountain bike. I have a budget of €600 give or take. I have a bike in mind. Spec im looking for is a hardtail, Hydro disc brakes, lock out front suspension with at least 100mm of travel. as I said I have a bike in mind but im looking for your advice.

Im new to off-road/trail. My road bike is XL (61cm) and spot on for size. my inside leg is 34" and Im 6"3.

I know mountain bikes are sized different, and was advised to go for a L 20"/21" as you dont want a oversized bike for off-roading or so I was told by many bike shops. Iv tried the L and it seems fine but again im looking for your advice.

    Regards
    B.Mac

I bought this and am very happy with it. Fork isn't up to much but its as good as you're going to get for that money.

The fork on this bike is a Suntour XCM V2. Very heavy, noisy and not very comfortable over really rough stuff.
However, it does the job for now but I can't imagine it'll survive many more trips to Ballyhoura.
It will be my first upgrade.
Other than that its a perfect bike for a beginner. Very upgradable.

Is it simply a case that you get to know the good and bad brenads of each?? Like for me looking at a bike as a novice, how could I tell if it is something worthwhile or not...??

Not trying to be smart but usually the price tells all. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/SearchResults.aspx?Search=suntour+fork

As I said, on a 650e bike you can't really expect too much.

maybe go to madmtb.com or epicmtb.com and ask for mtbr advice?

for 600 you'd pick up a great 2nd hand mtb!

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replys, in the end I went with the bike I had in mind which was the GT Avalanche 2.0 2010 got it in a L as I felt the XL would be too big for trashing around the trail, and I have made the right choice. I have had it out a few times already and it feels spot on for jumps, hill climbs, descents and the real rough stuff.

Looked at the trek, specializes and lapierre I found this to be the best value mid-range hardtail as I picked it up for €550 down from €620 so Im very happy with it.
