Grinding noise when starting car?

Hi guys, I drive a 2003 VW Beetle with 60,000 miles on it. About 90% of the time when I start the car I hear a grinding sound, it lasts 2 seconds. I've never had a problem starting the car, it always starts fine it's just this noise that's bothering me. I think it could be the starter sticking or something but I'm clueless…

Same thing happens to my '90 Micra (in fact, it was a common problem on those Micra's). It's apparently starter motor not engaging the flywheel properly. It's nothing serious, although it can be quite annoying at times.

On a VW I'd guess that it's the starter motor bush that is worn - usually you hear a grinding noise as the starter disengages.
