    Hi All,

Myself and my girlfriend are discussing whether we could leave our jobs and depart for Oz(Sydney) early 2011 for 1 yr +
I previously had a 1 yr WHV but let it expire. I really want to go through with it this time - We would travel for approx two months brfore settling back to working .. hopefully .. .. .
Due to the current climate it may be a foolish decision to pack up and leave jobs so I would really appreciate any info in relation to the following,

    1) What is the current jobs climate like. % unemployment is low at 5.2%..
my friend in Sydney says there was a bit of a slump but work has picked up. Are there any location that work is easier found.

    2) Are there any new restrictions in place that prevent Irish WHV holders from working in the civil/construction industry.

    3) In relation to sponsership, is it unlikely yo get sponcered before leaving for australia and how many many years does sponsersip entitle you to stay in the country.

Thanks for taking the time to read this,:)

    Regards, Mick

The last cycle of good old days are long gone but there is still work out there but you have to be sharp to get it, in Sydney there has been a shortage of big Civil Projects last few years partly because the current NSW Labour government are a bunch of F*uckwits and shelved everything .....that is why they are back in the black 3 years earlier than expected. Its hard to know whats going happen in 2011 but definitely 2012 onwards I reckon there will be a big increase in work its all down to the planning at the moment.

I know people who have been here 20 years and they say it goes around in cycles where you have 3 years of a lull and then 3 or 4 years of concurrent massive jobs.. it all depends.

Didn't know there was any old restrictions.

Depends on what your occupation and trade is?

If you are a Doctor or Nurse you should have no problem get sponsorship before leaving for Australia.

457 Sponsorship can be up to 4 years or you can be sponsored for ENS (Permanently)

I can only speak of Melbourne. I am here 5 months and out of work, living in an apartment so it's not a holiday.
It has been quiet the last couple of months in the run up to the end of the financial year.
I am looking for office admin work, 2+ years experience in Ireland. I also have a Mech/Manufacturing degree, but not currently looking for work in that, almost all of those jobs here are scarce and 50+ kms away from the city or you need citizenship.

OP, bring enough money with you for a few months of not working.
Skippy will not be waiting for you at the airport with a pot of gold as some people might portray here on boards.

Almost all recruitment is done through agencies and they are 10 times worse than Ireland. They don't include their number in the job ad (which is fine, easily looked up) but they also don't include their name so that makes it impossible to follow up your application by phone.

My wife on the other hand had no problem getting interviews, but she has over 10 years experience in what she does, and she is Australian, which is something I am not.
With the GFC around the world, a lot of Australians are or have returned here to work, they are getting priority in my opinion.

I liked this one and actually a good point, sometimes I wonder why people post about immigration checking for the $5000.

Really proving the minimum monetary requirements for the WHV is not as big an issue as running out of money after 2 months... I read in another thread someone said he was told it was pish... he must have been told Skippy was going to give him a sub on arrival.

    Cheers Mandrake.
I have 4 yrs experience working as a civil eng specialising in water conservation and water metering projects. Hopefully Australia is prone to water shortages. I will do more research - there are a few utilities companies that I may be able to contact directly and discuss sponsorship.

Ya might be in luck, Sydney has been on water restrictions for years. Do your homework and you might be get something alright.

There seems to be alot of construction work here in Perth at the moment, if your a smoker bring your maximum 250 duty free cigarretes allowance with you as cigarretes here are $14/€11 per 20 pack for Benson and Hedges, other brands are up to $17.

    Hi Mick,
Hope this helps...(all from a Melbourne point of view)
    1. I work in Health care, I was on a working holiday visa initially and I missed out on alot of potential jobs in Melbourne because of this visa mainly due to the 6 month per employer restriction it imposes - I did get a great job however it is located an hours drive outside of the city. To be honest, many employers are put off by the WHV (in professional fields) as it just doesn't really demonstrate that you are willing to commit long term...this is just from my experience. My partner, a chippy, worked for the initial 6 months in a bar...then started carpentry again...however as he does not have transport/tools...this has gone against him really...many employers in his area expect you to be well set up (again...more $)

However, we all have to start somewhere :o- just bear in mind that it may be hard to find the perfect job in one of the cities - you may need to look further afield/outer suburbs.

    2. The only restriction I know of is that you can only work for the one employer for up to 6 months.

    3. Re sponsorship..I am now sponsored by my company:D, went from a WHV to 457 visa without too much trouble...again its a job outside of the city (an hour isn't too bad:rolleyes:). If you were flexible about location you probably wouldn't have any trouble getting sponsorship from outside Aus...bear in mind though a rural city/ town in Aus. can be so far from anywhere!
A friend of mine, a geologist, has moved to the outback for sponsorship...well paid mind you :)

Sorry I can't be more specific re your industry. My brother is a civil engineer in Dublin, so I know how tough things are in that field at home.

    By the way...
I have 4 yrs experience working as a civil eng specialising in water conservation and water metering projects. Hopefully Australia is prone to water shortages.
This sounds very promising...there is a bit shortage of H2O here :)

I wish you all best! Any further inquiries..don't hesitate to ask :)
