Nikon FG-20 Light Meter Issues

Hello folks, I was recently given a Nikon FG-20 by my parents as they no longer use it and I have an interest in photography.
It's a very basic old SLR, the only electronic thing on it is the light meter which is powered by two button batteries (the details of which I'm not sure)
Anyway, I replaced the batteries and the light meter worked for a few seconds but no more..
I'm wondering has anyone else had this problem and how did you rectify it?

That was my main problem.. Kept overexposing a lot of the shots..
A manual is indeed a good thing to have. Thanks!
