Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was just nipping to the shop to get some milk. i changed down a gear as i was going up hill. All of a sudden i felt and heard something nasty, i went to take a look and seen a spoke lodged in the derailleur at an angle that no derailleur should ever experience. Now bike bike is a 5 year old road bike that was pretty much entry level when the brother bought it. I don't want to spend massive money on it as i plan on flogging it as soon as i can afford a semi decent entry level bike that's built for someone my size. As i'm a n00b to the world of cycling i have some questions. Can a new spoke be put on my wheel cheaply or is the wheel now a gonner? And, if when i get a wheel of some sort back on the bike and i discover a lack of geer changing, is it hard to fit a second hand derailleur onto a bike? (using the web for guides etc...)

Also, can anyone recommend the best place for repairs in galway city, I don't want to pay a fortune as i'm broke, but of course i'd be willing to spend money on a good job, i just dont want to be shafted.

    1. Looks like a broken spoke - no biggie, any bike shop worth it's salt should be able to put in a new spoke and true the wheel for you as a cheap and fast job

    2. Derailluers are reasonably cheap at entry level so a replacement one won't see a big dent in your pocket if needed (may not be)

    3. All things being equal and the state of the wheel being an indicator - clean your bike; it'll thank you for it by working better, have less wear on the drive train and probably be easier to sell when you decide it's time to upgrade

did that spoke pull through the rim ? or did the nipple break

anyway you'll need a new rear dropout (if its replaceable ) or the dropout straightening as well (the thing the derailliur attaches to will be bent after that)

just did the same myself and had to get a dropout alignment tool

spoke should be easy enough to replace if the rim isnt damaged

local bike shop will sort (tools and jigs needed for that amount of damage)

cheap new derailliur can be had for less than 20 quid - depends on what spec you got there
