A friend of mine in UK asked me via a chat proggie

"I need to talk to you!!! I'm shopping for a DSLR what do you recommend? I can't spend much so I'm hoping to get a versatile one that comes with a lense.
I'm looking at nikon sony and canon but i want high pixel count and preferably a tilt screen cause I shoot wierd angles.
This will be my first so I need a basic one
    Preferrable under £400"

    ty for all replies.

I'm not sure what other DSLRs would fall into that price point and have a tilting screen but the Nikon D5000 should meet their needs. I'm sure there'll be many more recommendations for Canon/Olympus etc to follow.

Edit: Actually just doubled checked and the D5000 falls outside of their pricepoint.

Just outside his price range @ £449, Sony A380 -

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Alpha-A380L-Digital-Camera/dp/B002A9JDK2

It's got everything he needs. Sony Alpha cams are easy to get to grips with, a tilting LCD screen, nice resoloution and of course, comes with a lens :)

ask him what he means by high pixel count or why he needs it.

    He is a she...
TBH I'm a bit hungover why I just slapped her request here...
I think the Sony would be grand for her.

and Basterder sure all newbies love their high pixels.....we can't change their way of thinking.

D5000 is good too, I'm sure she will have to stretch if need be...

Olympus E-600 from Currys. These were around €350 a few
weeks ago. I don't know if they have any left. The E-450
    is another option.

    The Sony A500 at £430

Otherwise the obvious choice is the Nikon D5000, but it will
    be over budget.

Dropping the requirement for a tilt screen opens your options
to include the most popular entry level DSLRs like the
    Canon 1000D, Nikon D3000, Sony A230, A290......

Ok thanks all, all these left on her page....

If like me, she likes to crop shots a lot in PP, then the higher pixel count is attractive for the price. I'm still on yer old 10mp and that's grand for now. Not a necessity to have higher mp, but a nice bonus I guess.

The new A290 probably has the same 14.2MP CCD sensor. You can pre-order
    from Sony at £399.

That doesn't have tilt-screen though does it? It doesn't mention it on that page. Not much difference in price, but looks like the newer one is gone back to the older, better, more comfortable, chunkier Alpha design - like my A200.

I don't think it has. They would surely mention it in the features list.

This will be at the bottom of Sony's DSLR range fairly soon. I reckon
the price will drop quickly after it is released.

I'd take a look at www.simplyelectronics.net and the Sony Alphas. I got a great price (and free delivery) on my A550 last December and I think their prices tend to be very competitive. The A550 is not a true entry level but has a high pixel count, tilt LCD and lots of features, but for a beginner can be set to full auto mode to start with.
