    What a stage.
    Well done Roche.
Hushovd deserved that free ride from Saxobank after yesterdays bullsh1t.

Vino dropped Contador. What an ass wipe.:D

Vino looking as strong as he did when he tested postive for someone elses blood. Looks like he is up to no good again.

Cheats should not be allowed back in

Roche up to 11th in the GC, nice.

Vino is some scumbag alright, ditching his leader like that

Andy Schleck's odds must have dropped now for an overall win - I know it's early days but still

Calm down. he was 10th on a stage. I agree that bans should be permanent but no need to be stirring it up either.

Roche up to 11th in GC

A Schleck now has 31 seconds on Contador. Armstrong another 50 seconds behind

Yes, Contador was positively bulling as he crossed the line. He'll be one angry little man on the Astana team bus.

Agree with previous poster about an unexpectedly exciting first week of the Tour. I normally ignore it and wait for the first mountain stage, but this has been highly entertaining stuff for a change.

Ya 10th on an epic stage. Showing fierce power. He was never really know as a classics style rider but showed it today. How can he still be so strong??? Looks jsut as strong as when he was doped.

Just shows how bad the testing is. I hate the guy. Such a cheat

Vino didn´t drop Contador. It looks like Contador punctured in the last kilometre and decided that rolling home on the flat was quicker than changing the wheel.

Ah, makes a little more sense. Still though, no need for Vino to be out in front with the hammer down.

Vino's push was smart. Alberto flatted (2kms togo), so will be given the time of Vino's group. Therefor, the faster Vino went, the better.

Evans doing well. Great to see. I think he'll win.....or come second again!

Terrible way for Armstrong to lose time. Hate to see that.

Thor is a big winner today. If he can finish in one piece, the green jersey ought to be his. Only Cancellara could take it from him, Kelly-style.

Geraint Thomas is a rider to watch for the future. Hell of ride. Same goes for Hesjedal.

    Great job by Roche.

    Good pics here.

Contador was brought to a stop by the crash while Armstrong got through. Surely that would have been unfair to Alberto to lose time that way(had LA not punctured) !

Edit; refering only to time gaps between AC and LA.

I thought that rule only applied to crashes, otherwise there's an incentive not to push out for the final 2k

    he looked strong today .

Would he not have been with the Contador group if he'd gotten Popo's bike though? Sorry was at work and didn't really see what happened.

I've just noticed that the festival of San Fermin begins in Pamplona tomorrow. Can't help but think that it would be safer to be running with the bulls than to be taking part in this year's Tour de France!

I've been trying to hunt down the stats to compare the injury rate during the Encierro with that of Le Tour 2010 but alas, I'm lazy. If someone else wants to take up that tangent be my guest!

Some phenomenal rides today. In particular Evans and Contador. Roche Wiggins and Thomas did very very well.
Would liked to have seen Ryder stay away. Any way pretty exciting stuff.
I thought that Lancie baby did very well today spart from repeated punctures.

While Hesjedal, Hushovd, FC all did well, chapeau must go to Contador who despite his size was at the business end of things and didn't look out of his debt.

Vino was always a classics rider. WOn Liege Bastogne Liege about 5 years ago. Amstel gold even before that.

I'd go so far as to say that when he moved from classics to GC rider is when his problems started. (and again I'm not condoning him)

Lots of great rides todays. Evans showing his all round ability again. Thomas showing he's a bright future. COntador and Schleck with great rides for two slight frames. Even our own Roche hanging in there impressively. Hydersal cold ened up in top 10 GC too

Was with Tmobile when he won those classics. They had a big blood doping programme. Google to see it. your knowledge is pretty poor. The man was a cheat back then as well and looks just as fit now. The man has no place in cycling anymore. he is a disgrace.

Photos of the guy looking very very easy when everyone else suffering. Disgrace

I've seen it written somewhere, though I don't know if it's true, that LA never once punctured during his seven TDF wins. He was, in fairness, due.

I still dislike the man, but I'll admit that riding back on to the bunch to limit his losses was pretty badass.

I think the biggest winner today was Cadel Evans. Those seconds he got over LA and AC today could be very useful and I think he'll take at least as many of Schlek in the TT in Bordeaux. I'd bloody love to see him win.

Great to see Nico up there among the super elite too. If he is to get a good GC he'll need to get all the seconds he can on those kind of stages where there are bunch splits as he'll inevitably lose time on mountain finishes and the TT. I still think I'd like to see him give the leaders a few minutes and free himself to go for a stage win, but if he (and his team) have decided that GC si what he's there for then so be it.

Great stage though. This is going to be a great tour.

In response to Armstrong's "sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail" comment, somebody posted this comment to the Cycling News Facebook page:
Sometimes you ride like a contender on the centre of the pave, other times you ride like a noob on the sketchy verge. And sometimes you start the stage with appropriate box section alloy rims and other times you lose two minutes after having to take one off one of your teammates.

Why does LA have "UNITE" written on his wheel?

Was I the only one looking at that deep section carbon and thinking that it was really tempting fate to write that on it? surely it would snap in two.

The stage results listed on cyclingnews.com and letour.fr have Contador 20secs down on Vino's group. Not sure Vaughters is correct on that.

In hindsight I may have been a bid hasty in condemning Vino. I had just seen the incident and thought he was doing a repeat of the Giro ttt. (Btw I meant Vino was an ass wipe- as opposed to Contador.)

I don't think Vaughters is right either. In the heat of the moment though, if he wasn't sure, the (probably) correct call was to tell Vino to drive on imo.

you were only allowed to take bikes from the team car or a team mate you werent allowed to take bikes from a (non-riding) team member at the side of teh road (cancellara did this in paris roubaix after the last stretch of cobbles) there could be a motor in it !

I don't know if there was a ban on bike changing yesterday but it would make a certain amount of sense. In the absence of such a ban they could just change to a specially set up cobbles bike at the start of each (or the longer) pave sections.Just a thought.
