Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

hi, please help... I've recently joined a photographic society but feel i am way out of my depth. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where i would maybe get a photography class, helping me with even the basics.... I'm in the Laois area.. Thanks..

you can learn a fair amount from online tutorials ...youtube ... or loads of reading websites.

playing around with yer camera works too - take a pic, look at your settings..... adjust your settings...take another pic....see what difference it makes to the pic.

first, i'd suggest maybe having a chat with your photo society people as most clubs will be very accommodating to newbies and of all hobbies with photography you will find people only too accommodating to share what they know. Also they may orient a course locally (for newbies) if you talk nicely to them :) (perhaps even will have one in the archive just waiting for the moment)

As for courses, try the institute of photography - they're Dublin based but run short courses for people as well as night time courses over longer periods.

Stick around here too - you could do much worse. Ask as many questions as you like on the forum. There will always be helpful and interested people about here :)

I'd agree with AnCat, if you want to do a course then Dave McKane of the IOP is a good man to get in touch with. I know a few people who've done courses with him and all seemed to find them very interesting & helpful.

i'll +1 this, cos this is how i learned; from reading my dad's practical photography magazines (which i originally started reading because this was back in the day where they had a lot more bikini and nude shots than they do now), and from trial and error. once you understand light and exposure, you've basically won the battle.

My buddy is doing a course in D1 Studio in town, she's raving about it. Apparently it's very hands on. They take to the streets during the 6 week course. I plan on doing the intermediate course myself there. Will post my review when I do it.

would you be the Paul Kelly to whom www.d1studio.ie is registered to?;)

or maybe it is just coincidence??

A sad effort at spam if this is true!

I'd go with PCPhoto on this - seems most amateurs go this way (at least for the initial part of the learning curve). Lots and lots of info in lots and lots of resources on the interweb. You might source a couple of books to get you going - search this forum for recommended books.

I was in your position last year - green as grass - and took the above advice. Would need to do specific courses to advance from here but I definitely did not need to do a course for the basics.

    Good luck!
