It was their intention that you request craftsmen to do materia attaching for you (there's even a particular request for it).
This was probably a strategy since as a craftsman you're shafted almost every other way (worthless prices for stuff you make).

Eventually you'll probably end up with a situation where craftsmen will start putting up their sweat 'n' blood crafted HQ equipment, materia equipped and ready to go like a delicately produced wedding cake.

anyone having problems past 24 hours trying to play the game, I keep getting logged out and only the Japanese server list is refreshed each time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭swirlser

Doesnt seem being completely out of the loop has hurt me here - even tho the game got great reviews and lots of positivity in general, just a month in and people going a bit meh on it o.O

Had no internet for over a month and RL just way too hectic to play much of anything, so Ive not yet ventured in! Excited to get going soon tho ;)

And yup, GTA is a thing, big fan back when it was a simple top down (!), hardly played a few hours total of 3/4/exp packs (gotta be honest, thats how little I payed attention ^.^), but with the press 5's gotten, I know Im gonna go in and check that out - also the last several https://www.humblebundle.com/ packs have had some great content, Ive just downloaded over a dozen games - SO much to chip away at!!

Not had any problems over the weekend - longest wait was 3/4 mins for a queue of 12 on Odin.

I just can't get motivated to grind fates from lvl 47-49 for the next story mission, would probably be finished the story by now if i was bothered but just really not arsed

Feeling a bit lost now on where to go with the game. I'm level 32, initially ACN and unlocked the SCH job. I tried healing the next story dungeon, Brayflox's Longstop, but had a miserable experience ending in a wipe. Don't know whether to blame the tank(it was a pug group) or my healing.
Not sure what to do with myself. If I want to go down the SCH route full time I need to grind a few thousand GC seals to reset my stats so I can put my points into Mind, since I was putting them into Intelligence as an ACN. Then I would want to run through all the previous dungeons a few times to practise my gameplay skills, and probably do Haukke a lot to gear up. But I'm not sure I enjoy playing SCH enough for all this. Or that I am physically capable of the micro needed for proper pet control, since I have been playing. I could always go level THM instead and play SMN, but I feel like I'd be letting myself down playing a mindless DPS class that is not valued anywhere as much as a tank or healer, no matter how good you are.
Also, general social anxiety problems are flaring up from playing the game. While I want to be a good healer(and take advantage of shorter DF times), I'm not sure I can mentally handle the responsibility, especially at higher level and endgame. When we wiped at Brayflox I just Alt-F4'd the game, blaming myself for the wipe. That kind of experience makes me consider dropping the game entirely.

It is a really fun game though. It has problems. but I think the biggest thing I would like to change is to make leves give more exp, so you can do them instead of FATEs. I can't imagine that the way areas like Aleport or Costa del Sol are dominated by roving bands of characters killing FATE mobs in 1 hit is what the developers intended. People should be playing dungeons or doing leves for exp when they run out of quests, but it seems most people don't like playing with others in the dungeons and just want to get through them. The way the game suddenly forces you to play with others in three consecutive dungeons for story progression is poorly handled I think. I know personally it just put me off playing for a while until I built up the courage to do the dungeons.

Sounds like your taking the game a little too seriously. If it was genuinely your own lack of skill that caused the wipe then by all means take some time to do another role for a change or get some more experience in the healing role doing other things.

I've not healed a group yet in XIV (or played it at all since 2.0 even). But, if it's anything like other MMORPGs, then these scenarios happen from time to time. You mention it was a PuG - been in a million of those, sometimes meeting skilled players who are a joy just to play with and sometimes (slightly more often!) meeting idiots who don't know how to play their class, understand an encounter, or how best to aid the entire group. Those bad groups are part of rolling the dice going into a PuG, and poor players often don't even know the cause of the failure but will loudly express it was someone else's fault.

Still comes back to - it is just a game. Play it if you enjoy it more than it stresses you (tanking and healing come with *some* stress!). Maybe try join a guild/company/whatever it's called in FF, that have a similar play style and approach to the game you do?

(Oh, and don't diss dps'ers! May not come with stress, but any decent player appreciates having someone that can squeeze every drop of dps out while not overstepping threat/aggro lvls ;)

Brayflox is where dungeons start to pickup in difficulty e.g. mobs start to hit harder, tanks need to be able to dodge, etc. If you could heal in the previous instances then I don't think it was your fault, and no need to worry if it was! I can relate to this playing as War, especially on the first run or two, but feck it! No point in worrying about it :)

Patch 2.1 will increase the Exp earned in dungeons, so that should help things. Have you tried crafting/gathering? It's fun and might take your mind of other things for a bit! One thing I used to do was keep my Smn and War at near the same level so I could run a dungeon on Smn first and then brave it on War. I did eventually stop this, but it might be something to look into?

One other thing, try and join a free company that has some friendly, but go for one that doesn't have 200+ people in it would be my advice.

So I'm back playing this week after a 3 week absence.

Having a ton of rested XP helps, but I'm finding I'm breezing through the levels. I've also joined a friendly FC on Odin, which seems to be well populated and has a few Irish on it, so that's really adding to the sense of community.

Game wise the mechanics have definitely taken a step upwards in complexity. I've just hit level 43, and the last few dungeons have introduced some complex mechanics in - OK not WOW level in WOTLK or anything (sorry that's my last WOW benchmark), but challenging none the less. Sunken temple is a total bitch - I'm glad I got it once, no desire to go back there again.....

I'm hopefully going to hit 45 tomorrow and will start my AF quests, then onwards to 50. I haven't found myself short of anything to do, I ran into a queue to get online yesterday evening, place is still well populated (although well spread out at this stage), and the forthcoming patch looks like it will address many gripes (including more XP from dungeons).

Its still very early day (2 months now i think), but still very much enjoying it, and looking forward to 50 to kick off HM instances.

Well I decided to log in and queued up for Brayflox, and the group I got beat it the first time, though we wiped once on the end boss. Got a nice hat from the loot. I ended up playing for a few more hours after that, so engaged with the game again.

I also realised that there's no reason I can't just level SMN and SCH simultaneously and thus be able to queue as DPS or healer if I need to- they both use similar equipment and both level at the same time, as they're just ACN jobs. SMN also makes the solo content much easier than trying to main as SCH. So I'm currently taking a break and levelling THM instead for a while to unlock SMN. I will be putting all my points into MND though, so by default I will be better at healing than DPS.

Brayflox is a good place to run a few times and get the nice gear (Battlemage set looks incredible, but took me about 20 runs to complete set :(, also good practice dungeon for more complex mechanics.

I just hit 45 so going for my AF now..... gogogogogo

Got my first four pieces of BLM AF. I do look pretty bad ass even if I do say so myself..... And the quest is mercifully easy. The horror of running around Garlaige Citadel in FFXI looking for coffers is a distant memory.....

I loved that place. Actually the reason I was about to give could be applied to so many place in XI!

But I do have great memories of easy exp by the door and then when it came to venturing in, the door further in required a key or something? And once you got on the other side it was all business, needed some good player with u and using the different magics to sneak around, I hope XIV has somewhere that gives that feeling.

Ahh yes the good old days. Using sneak and invis to get past a load of mobs 5 levels higher than you. Then both of them running out before you are clear, but they are skeletons and aggro to magic if you recast. OH MERCY!!

Do people recommend this game on consoles? I plan on getting the PS4 release.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭TheBandicoot

Might work better on PS4 than PS3. Control wise it's not a problem, you can use a controller just fine and have a keyboard attached just for chatting. I've never had a real problem, and the leader of our FC plays exclusively on a pad and is on Coil Turn 4. As long as you're serious about learning your class and customizing the controls to suit you and then practicing with them to develop the muscle memory, noone you play with will mind/know.

I think the real problem is the PS3 is not powerful enough to run the game when it gets busy, long loading times, entities in the world like other players or mobs randomly not appearing, that kind of experience. It might be better on PS4, wait for it to come out and make a decision then.

The general consensus is that a installing a ssd hard drive on the ps3 will solve a lot of performance issues. The PS3 just can't cope with loading many many files from the hard disk demanded by games like FF14.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭TheBandicoot

Yeah, that would work too. But I think if you're going to invest in an SSD you may as well just save up a bit and upgrade your computer. I suppose if you have a laptop only it's a different story.

I'm still enjoying the game, the FC I was in had some drama and fell apart, joined a new one which is extremely laid-back and social. I'm at 48 now, eager to get to 50 so I can complete my AF gear set. Play a couple of hours every night after work.

One thing that worries me is the two final story dungeons, which I understand are full of cutscenes? I fully intend to watch all of them my first time instead of watching them in the inn, but apparently some groups get annoyed at this and will go on without you? Anyone have any experiences of this? I have heard this is less of an issue than it was at launch, as they have made WP a more attractive dungeon for getting tomes, so there will be more first-time players doing the dungeons than people grinding for tomes. I've also had zero problems in any dungeon so far with cutscenes, people wait for me, I wait for them, nothing is ever said.

No-one I know grinds anything other than WP for tomes, and maybe the odd AK. Having said that I skipped the scenes in CM and Praetorium when I was running them first time, as you do still get some people running others through, and they get a bit antsy if you delay things. Once the 2.1 changes come out, I understand you can select 'story mode' in duty finder rather than grinding, so you should be grouped with people who want to watch the CS. Although you may well be waiting longer, as people might prefer to go for a quicker run - the cut scenes are quite lengthy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭TheBandicoot

Fair enough. Might try to time the runs to do them with other people from my FC, I know some of them are coming up to their first 50 as well.

Even if people get antsy I'm not going to skip the scenes. They are a part of the game after all, and like you say since you shouldn't be grinding those dungeons, everyone should be in the same boat. If you are trying to rush through it, tough, do a different dungeon.

Well I did both the dungeons this evening and it was pretty bad. In CM, everyone but me was grinding it for tomes, they did a speedrun avoiding lots of enemies, never explained any of the mechanics to anything, and were overgeared so everything just melted. I was left behind while I was watching the cutscenes but it didn't matter, no one was taking any serious damage for me to heal so I just felt useless. Felt pretty bad, like I would have got the same experience by just watching Youtube.

Praetorium, started out that way, tank and a bunch of the DPS tried to run past the enemies in the first few sections and moaned when others in the group watched the cutscenes. After 5 minutes of whining in chat and us telling them not to look for a speedrun/grind in DF, they got sick of us and left. We had no problems getting all the way to the second to last boss with just one tank, when one joined. Once the speedrunners left I actually had a pretty fun time, we watched the cutscenes and the other tank took the time to explain mechanics. Prae is a fun dungeon. But it exposes you to horrible members of the community.

Well, I'm finally back in as of today :o

Drowning in quests, figuring what I'm meant to do with bags jammed with "dated" gear....

Not liking what I'm reading here about CS, one thing I loved about FFXI is the level of manners thru most of the community. CS's were rare enough, but if I remember rightly, there were no icons or anything to show u we're watching one and it wasn't like everyone was at that point in the storyline. So u could enter whatever that bone tower was called while in an exp party and someone looked like they were just idle a few mins. No one ever said anything, it was understood what was happening and it was all good.

You can other hang on to your old gear so you can use it for levelling other classes and give it to a retainer(which will you get later by following story quests if you don't have one yet), or you can convert it to materia(again, follow quests to unlock that), or you can sell it on the Market Board.

The way it works is the character goes idle and their health bar in the party list changes to "Viewing cutscene". But if even one person skips the cutscene they can keep on playing, start the boss battle, etc while the cutscene viewers just stand around. That's what happened to me, we'd reach a boss arena, a scene would play showing the boss arriving or whatever, I'd watch it, then by the time it was finished I'd find the rest of the group had already killed the boss and had left me behind as they moved on with the dungeon.

Don't get me wrong, I never had any problems with cut scenes until the last two dungeons. In all the previous ones people were very courteous, never said anything, generally they would take the time while the scene was playing to type a boss strategy into the chat, that kind of thing. The problem only really becomes apparent in the last two dungeons, which are 8mans(everything up to that is 4man), and which drop currency which you need to buy end game gear. So you get people who just want to do the dungeon as quickly as possible and get the currency. That conflicts with people who are following the main story, are doing the dungeon for the first time, and either get pressured to skip cutscenes or just ignored. It creates horrible drama.

If that thing another poster said about adding a "Story Mode" checkbox to the LFG interface in an upcoming patch is true, great, that will solve the problem. Or the people who want to grind should not be using the dungeon finder, they should be forming their own parties. Or they should be grinding other dungeons that are not part of the main story. Because the current setup just left a really bitter taste in my mouth after a levelling experience I had really really enjoyed as part of a great game.

It will, altho I see that creating a different problem. You want to grind loot a lot more than the one-off watching of CSs, So doing a dungeon for the first time with story mode checked will result in very long wait times. I hope they add it, but in such a way people can check both - hopefully the result would be not too much of an increase in wait time.

You get a free trial month afaik with a new account (fairly normal), no better way than to try it out urself and see. I'm not back playing long, but it is massively improved from its 1.0 launch state. While there is plenty to do so far and people seem to enjoy the current end game - it doesnt feel as addictive as previous MMOs, which I think is a good thing, means I can happily take some months out here and there and let some content get added without feeling like im missing out. Sub is 12pm, less if u go for longer subs (11pm with a 6month sub). Does seem like a lot, especially when you see what you can get for the money else-where. PS+ annual costs less than 5 months sub and you get shedloads of games - Im well on my way to filling a 750gb hd in my PS3, vita has long since been full (32gb card). Amazon/greenman/steam sales can get some great stuff for cheap and ofc humblebundle, the one thats up right now is stupidly good value. Orcs2 is a lot of fun and thats just 1 of a half dozen titles in that current bundle.

Sure I bought it as a game to play over the month long christmas break i have from college.. so perfect timing to try the free trial.. 12per month is pretty expensive.. yea, i have a 500gb harddrive but its hard to connect to psn in college so i havent bothered with PS+ yet although I've heard it can be really good!

Anyone still playing? Tried out the 2.1 patch content?

Plenty to do now with all the new content but you have weekly lockouts on the Crystal Tower Gear too which can be frustrating when you are a tied to the RNG that is this games drops at times! Iv done Bahamuts Coil Turn 1 -4 for 4 weeks straight now with not seeing 1 WHM piece...

Still playing, got reic+1, CT chest and pants and rest DL. Mainly doing things with my FC these days, need to get started on Ultima and Mog King this weekend. Generally log in on weeknights to do CT for the 50 myth tomes.

Real problem with the game is the economy- it is completely broken now that everyone is trying to raise money for housing. Nothing sells anymore and as soon as it does, people undercut it in hours and ruin the market.

There's a crafter in my FC who's spends more time crafting than playing. He raised the 25mil for a medium house by providing FC with spiritbinding crafted items and selling materia. It's a complete waste of time though cause houses are pointless trophies ... Money is also pointless since there is nothing to spend it on. So economy broken not a big deal.

What servers are you guys on?

Im on Excalibur bu thats a Legacy server where the original 1.0 players are but can still pick it. Unfortunately from what i can tell those that are playing from boards we seem to be spread across 3-4 different servers so no real community. Probably worth jumping on with one of the guys anyway.

I'm waiting until the PS4 version. We should all do a check to see who's playing it then on boards and get the Irish contingent together!

Yeah, I dont think we could be much more spread out if we tried lol!

Ive been meaning to write some thoughts on this, but wanted to get some end game in first. I kind of went about things backwards, I got several crafts to 50 first, then caster classes (white/black/scholar) to 50 and a gathering (bot) to 50.

I started this thread hyped as f***. Gave V1.0 more time than I should have. Once the novelty wore off, a brief state of denial followed until I eventually accepted it wasnt happening. I was happy SE came out and acknowledged the game wasnt up to scratch and they would go back to the drawing board.

I decided I'd give the reboot a little time before trying it out, knowing I almost certainly wouldnt be giving this MMO a 3rd chance. Towards the end of November I was reading a preview on patch 2.1 and figured its time I gave FFXIV:ARR another go :)

The game is pretty unrecognisable, almost entirely for the better. The cities havent changed much apart from zoning and npc's, but as for the rest of the world, they hit delete and started fresh. They needed to and what a great job they did! Every ability and spell has been messed with. Theres quests galore and a storyline that runs from the moment you arrive til well after you have hit the current level cap.

    The good:

A long and well structure storyline that will send you all across the world, reward you with items, money, exp, and unlock dungeons as you go.

There are dungeons! (Silly this even goes on a list, but in 2010 there werent any!)

Convenience exists in ARR. Decent options to let you search for or create parties. Or queue for cross-realm instances.

Encounters are well thought out and enjoyable.

UI is no longer a laggy clusterf***.

The inventory has been very well done. Each equippable slot has its own storage space, and entire gear sets can be created and selected with a single click.

Level sync is well utilized, allowing players above the specified level to take part in FATEs and dungeons without being way out of whack in power.

A perhaps novelty achievement - but fun all the same, you can buy a house (and furnish it) as a free company (guild). It's actually good craic! It serves as a nice hang out and adds an extra layer of bonding to your FC mates. We got one which neighbours to 2 other FCs we are friendly with. Complete with sex dungeon and all (perverted lot!)

You can use your mounts to fight along side of you and they are actually useful. Complete with own skill tree and armor (aesthetics only).

Aesthetically pleasing. Armor, environments and effects are all done to a great standard.

    The bad:

The game is too solo-centric (pre hitting cap anyway). In XI you were pee'ing against the wind trying to do anything beyond level12 by yourself. This game took the direction of being more friendly to solo play but didnt seem to know when to stop. Open world quests can be done in a group but you cant share quests, and even if you and whoever you have teamed up with have the same quest active you will be basically doing it as if you were alone - appearing on the other persons screen as if you are interacting with nothing. Most (possibly all?) quests which are instanced as part of either the story or class-specific must be done solo. And a big kicker, they introduced daily dungeon roulette's in the last patch, which can only be done solo - hopefully that will change!!

Most optional quests are very dull. Its a kill X amount of Y, talk to A, B & C, or collect items off the ground. At level cap, you can do daily faction quests which attempt to vary in style, but its nothing to write home about. While every MMO has some form of this, ARR doesnt even attempt to pull it off with any flare or variety.

Classes feel watered down (!). Not to a disastrous degree, but you can feel like maybe a spell or ability is missing.

The cross-class system has been dumbed down to hell. XI had a real intelligence about it, and surprisingly even V1.0 had a better system :s

Some might find this good, but I think its a bad choice. The gearing path is out of whack. You get tomes (a form of currency) for doing high level quests and the daily random instances (as a level cap char). With these you can purchase the highest ilvl items in the game without actually having to go into proper end game content :S Basically you are given nearly a full set of gear from you class quest, pretty much handed to you at 45 and 50. There are 2 types of tomes atm, 1 which you get in ample supply which gets you ilvl70 (decent) and the other gets you ilvl90 (afaik the current top level) which is slower to collect (and has a weekly cap).

Thats the bones of it anyway. The game has come a loooong way and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys MMOs. Equally so to a new comer to the genre, the game holds your hand plenty. Even with its extra time in development, the game is still a baby as MMOs go. With that in mind, I would say someone who can play 10-12 hrs in a week would experience plenty with a 3 month sub. With hindsight, I would have taken the 3 month sub over the 6 month ^_^ But the game is growing and even with some breaks I'll be returning again and again Im sure.

I'd disagree with this. The game gives you the option to do as you please. I'm currently leveling my 3rd class (going to 4th soon I hope), and I'm doing it pretty much exclusively using the dungeon finder.

If I wanted to play solo I could do so - quests, fates, hunting log, leves etc.

I find there is great flexibility.
