    Heya all. :)

I thought I'd make this thread so we could all say hello and get to know each other before we start UCC in September - that way at least we wont feel so intimidated and nervous (or maybe that's just me :P ).

I accepted my first choice course today to study Arts at UCC. Planning on studying English, History, Latin and an unknown fourth in the first year. I was originally wanting to do just an English studies course, but the other Uni's were too far away and re-locating wasn't an option... (married + mortgage ).

Anyhoo I'm up in Mallow and will be commuting to Cork (which should be fun -.- ) but I have heard a rumour of a free park and ride car park near the Uni, which may lessen the pain.

I'm really looking forward to starting Uni... wish it was next week, but I'm sure the last few weeks will fly by. Can't wait to stock up on stationary supplies lol!

So let us know what you're going to be studying, where you're from etc and how you're feeling about the whole "mature" student label. :D I'm only 27, and don't feel so mature as yet, but still, being surrounded by students that are going to be about 10 years younger will be a little freaky!

    Hi All,

I received offer of my 1st choice UCC also today, General Nursing.....absolutely delighted :D. Married with 3 kids and living about 5 miles from Bishopstown so commute won't be a problem just the parking!!! But if I have to, I can park at my Mum's house in Bishopstown and walk from there. Really looking forward to it but nervous  also about my ability to study after such a long time. Did my leaving in '85!!!!

    Hella

I’ll be going to do Sports Studies. Pretty excited but a bit apprehensive. 4 years seems like a long time. Worried that I’ struggle with the work. Haven’t done anything like this for nearly 15 years and wasn’t the best then :o

I’m moving to Cork from Dublin. Haven’t sorted anywhere to live yet. Hoping I’ll get somewhere nice. I’ve shared in Dublin and a few other places for years so shouldn’t be too bad.

Now hopefully I’ll get a grant or else I’m pretty screwed.

About parking I found more info on that free park and ride for students which might be of some use to you :)http://www.ucc.ie/en/build/commuting/parkandride/

Hi all, deelighted to get an offer for Arts ck101. It's a huge step forward for me after 3yrs of recovery from injury-- pretty daunting after quite a few years since I was last in the books-- I'll have to give up the random punctuation and the creative spellin!-- I've heard there are writing workshops on offer--Does anyone know if they are before the term starts or during?

I've an idea I'd like to do psychology as a major in years 2&3-- Has anyone asked the department if there is a paticular combination of 1st year subjects that are "good for the portfolio"??
obvious ones like Sociology and Philosophy would be in, but what about Maths:eek:!??
I'd rather do something spurious like Geography as I've always been a bit of a mountain man.
    Any thoughts?

I'm a mature student in UCC and just finished first year. You can't do psychology as a major in second or third year Arts. It's only available as a minor. I think this is because there's a seperate BA in Psychology. So, if you continue on with psychology you can only do it as a minor. If you want a career in it though, after the 3 year Arts degree you can do a 2 year HDip in psychology which converts your Arts degree to a psychology degree. Then you can go on to do Master's and specialise.

Ahh, so the number of psychology graduates is restricted to the favoured few who got on the 'applied psychology' course-- well done to the four of you! More professional restrictive practices- seriously though, those that achieved a place must have worked exceptionally hard for it.
Anyway, I'll be the bloke in the psych/soc/phil lectures moaning about my gimpy leg-- look forward to meeting you there.

Just wondering if anyone knows is there any other info days etc in UCC or is next thing registration?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 98 ✭✭December

I haven't heard anything about another info day - but there is this upcoming:

    From the UCC website (http://www.ucc.ie/en/study/further-info/mature/importantdates/details-103245-en.html)

06.07.2010: Incoming Mature Students offered "Transition to University" Workshops
Mature Students who have been offered a place to begin an undergraduate degree in UCC in September 2010 will also be offered the opportunity to attend a "Transition to University" Workshop before the college term begins.
All Mature Students who have accepted their place via the CAO will be written to in the next two weeks with information on the workshops including the various dates offered and the content of the workshops.

Oooh and just found this about our registration and orientation dates:

Sorry for the double post, but I found another good link today that I thought you may be interested in; so you can figure out your timetable and future work hours (like I've had to do) :D

    http://timetable.ucc.ie/1011/default.htm

I found it best to choose the department and search for your subject that way as by searching via programme it can get a little confusing. :p

    Hi all
starting ucc in Sept doing arts (politics and religion, not sure of other subjects). I'm probably one of the more mature students (mid 50s) but hopefully will fit in with all you young ones. Any one else doing arts? doing politics and religion or the transition thing on the 5th?

I hope we will all get acquainted as the year developes

    Mike

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 90 ✭✭sex panther

hey im doing psych aswell!! Cant wait to start! i live in the city already bout 30 mins walk from ucc im investing in a bike, all the students go in and around ucc, college road etc but if ur not up to living with the madness that is 17year olds, maybe city center? or even blackrock, or douglas they are nice except if ur driving into college parking is supposed to be hard to find, one lady said she has to get there before 8am to get parking, so maybe somewhere nice in the city center?

Hi, I've just enjoyed the first day of the orientation workshop. great buzz.
I asked my group (blu) if they posted on boards-- non admitted-- I put people on to it.
I smiled to my self when no one admitted to being the "sex panther"
I'm guessing one originally joined for other boards-- Clubbing??

We spent the last two days wandering around campus with our "tour guides"
It was great to get to recognise a few faces on day 2 --it's well worth going to-- just to have relaxed chats with people on similar courses/modules-- Do get "stuck into" them on your thing-- you'll have a good bunch of new buddies even before the first day of term.

You do know it's illegal in Nine countries as it's made from bits of real Panther?!!

    Hey Steve

I was at that workshop as well. I'm guessing by you name that you're the guy who said he was Welsh. I feel a little more at ease about going back to college after the 2 days. Now just got to organise everything for my move to Cork.

    Hi GSOIRL,

Your going into ck116 yes? just to make sure I have the right person...I am attending workshop next week but I am missing orientation and registration and the first day of term as I will be on holidays...Was the workshop good help to you...is it boring and repetitive or is it interesting?

Being a cork local if you need any advice on areas to live down here just ask.

  • Registered Users Posts: 234 ✭✭GSOIRL

    Hi 2Mature

    Yep I'm doing CK116.

I found the workshop mostly useful. It was good because they told you about all the help that they offer mature students. Also gives you a brief description of what is expected by the lecturers for essays, exams etc. The tour was pretty rubbish. Still don't know where most of the buildings are. Overall worth doing.

Hey guys just wondering when ye were applying as a mature student did ye have to send an academic transcript of results of a previous degree? Would the degree certificate not do?
