Disappointing WC Final. Reflects all that is poor about football.

This will be my overriding memory of the final, diving, histrionics, cynicism.....a sport that is being slowly killed from within. Thanks be to God for the Championship.:pac:

The commentators and their "victory for football" rubbish is getting annoying. Spain played well in 1 game in the entire tournament, scraping through with set piece headers and penos! Is this their 4th 1-0 in a row? Arsenal from the early 90's!

They only scored 8 goals in the entire thing, it's kind of sad! 8 goals in 7 games!

There was a questionable free, which i think was a free before the spanish move to score.

And he missed a stonewall corner not too long before that.

And should have sent off Robben and De Jong

As a Dutch man I would like to re-iterate I said on another forum:

We were an absolute insult to football, absolutely gutted tonight, more over about the way we approached the game.

Well done to Spain they deserved it .

All we were was a bunch of thugs, and I feel Howard Webb did a great job its a pity he didnt send off more, Petulance and Thuggery does not win you the world cup.

Happy for eZe where ever he is tonight enjoy it mate!

Odds are divided by 5...not too bad if you had Forlan though!

Divided by four - Betfair just paid out on Forlan at a quarter of 75/1. That and backing the draw in the hurling has saved my Summer's gambling.

Villa and Casillas are the 2 players that won Spain this tournament. Without them Spain just would have been passing sideways for an eternity and probably conceded what Casillas saved in the Paraguay and Dutch games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭Vincent Vega

I don't get all this Iniesta hate.

    The guy is NO cheat.

He is just a quick footed player, who wrongfooted the sloppy dutch challenges many times in this match.
    And they were booked accordingly.

Considering ultra defensive Portugal got 7 in one game that's poor.

Has any team ever won 3 successive big tournaments? Perhaps that is the next marker. I suppose they are young enough to still be in the favourites in 2012.

Delighted for Spain. Wish I was back in Madrid right now. :(

Fabregas made a big difference once he came on. He was central to their creativity in extra time. Why didn't he come on earlier? Casillas should have been MOTM as he made two important saves at the right time. Iniesta just gets for being the goalscorer, though he did well.

Spain weren't as good to watch as they could have been but they had to adapt their tactics in the last two games. Football is both a technical and tactical game, as this World Cup has demonstrated greatly. They tried to play football the right way but when teams made it tougher for them, they adapted and got through it.

Delighted for the likes of Casillas, Iniesta, Xavi, Piqué and Villa. Some great players who thoroughly deserved to win it. In particular, it was great to see Casillas at the end. You can see how much it means to him and this is a guy who's won practically all there is to win.

Yeah, they had cheaters in their side, as did the Dutch. I reckon most of the sides had cheaters in there, except for the likes of North Korea. This side of the game doesn't bother me so much. It's not nice but it's up to FIFA and the authorities to clamp down on cheating in the game and encourage better behaviour. As long as they continue to not do it, then players are going to go on doing as they do. It's a sad state of affairs.

If only Celtic had more players at the World Cup, it would have been a better tournament.

We seen when Braafheid came on, it changed the game. Evander Sno should have been starting as well.

Can't wait for the first Old Firm....:D

    Terrific from Spain.

It sure is a victory for football. The movement and passing was unstoppable. Delighted that football won out.

Holland were absolute thugs. They didn't deserve it in the slightest.

Well, they didn't win the Olympics or the Confed Cup, though I'm sure most people wouldn't consider those to be major tournaments.

Yeah, I got my payment for Thomas Muller. Sneider getting awarded that Melo own goal cost me €140

Except for dejong and van bommel(and no surprises there) i thought the dutch were competitive. Tackling is still allowed for now. Robben's honesty(first time i've ever said that:rolleyes:) could have cost ye when he stayed on his feet when he could have dived for the peno. The spanish are a cheating cancer to football:mad:

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,537 ✭✭✭joseph brand

    Congratulations Spain. Well deserved.

I don't understand people moaning about Spanish diving. What else are you supposed to do if a team is just out there to try break legs and chests?

Holland are a disgrace, although I feel sorry for Robben and Sneijder.

Van Bommel and De Jong should be escorted out to the nearest police station.

Xavi and Iniesta are great to watch. Top class.

    Viva Espana. :D

Dissapointing game, happy that Spain got the result though. The Dutch were a disgrace. Obviously their game plan was to try and kick the Spanish off the pitch. So at least that plan didn't work out for them.

So glad Spain won that. It would have been a travesty for football if Holland had edged that one.

Ah delighted for Forlán. One of the most honest players you'll ever see. If only he had arrived at United a few years later and he could have been a real force for them. What a man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭yahoo_moe

They have said that this was an awful advertisement of football and blamed both teams. Spain were the lesser of two evils tonight.
If you think they've focused enough on Spain's faults (not football-wise, but attitude-wise and in terms of rule-breaking), then grand - as I say, everyone has their prejudices and either mine or yours are getting in the way here.

Spain were absolutely the lesser of two evils, but I just think it's being oversimplified big-time into a 'goodies' and 'baddies' story.

Of course not. RTE is the most biased commentary and analysis possible. I would say even spanish tv like spain less:rolleyes:

Disgusting result for a disgusting team, Gutted for Holland, they played hard and in the 2nd half when they played well they were great, Spain typically only won on half attempts and while we spoke of Greece in '04 this takes it to a new level. Holland were hardly dirty their ""tackles" were hardly nothing and the referee single handedly handed Spain the title, if Holland had 22 players the ref and fifa would still have handed Spain the title. It was the worst tournament ever but one Ireland could have done well enough if had we not been cheated by Henry.

For me Holland and Germany were the true winners having defeated both Brazil and Argentina respectivly.

A sad day when a few lads built like 14 year old boys can play like this and ruin a world tournament.

Roll on 2014 and Brazil and the Copacabana where we will see some real football and maybe Ireland might get a chance to go.

Holland are becoming the Jimmy White's of football.

Ha HA HA, Liam, we all know Xavi is a fantastic player, but most of his passes are not forward ones.
