Congrats on passing your exams to date fea :). Tell me do you find it easier to take stuff on board now that your are a mature a student than when you were in secondary school?

i'll be 31 in march and im waiting for a degree course to be put up online to see if I qualify for it but incase I don't I plan on going back to do my leaving cert again and gets the peoper grades points so I can have a wider choice of courses then. Not so many out there that let you in purely on the basis of maturity :(. I wonder will it be easier to study and take things on board as a mature instead of the 18 year old who just wants to start making money which is what I did .

    Hi Gareth,

Lovely to meet you. The one thing that mature students have that other students may lack is that we want to be in college, we want to educate ourselves, we (mostly) enjoy what we are doing and want to put the time into our studies. I can't compare what I am doing now in college with what I did back in my school days, for one, its that far back I'm not sure I can depend on my memory :D and secondly, its a whole new ball game for any mature student who has a hectic family to run too. Worlds apart...

Not sure what you mean about the choices for mature students, but most of us just applied through the CAO for a place as a mature student. The colleges reserve places for just us !!!! isn't that great???!! :D

I'm deliged to see so many more of you doing so well on here, this is really fantastic. Keep up the great work everyone xxxxx

Hi Hairyprincess - thanks for your post smile.gif. I've applied to do the Bioscience at Letterkenny but I really don't think I have a hope in hell's chance of being taken seriously because I only have my FETAC 5 and no leaving certs. I also have no working experience of science to strengthen my application as a mature student. Yet last year I taught myself Junior cert. physics and chemistry and I am now working through the Leaving cert. physics syllabus to get me up to scratch. I did the Biology as part of the FETAC. I'm also doing Leaving cert. maths through local VEC. Is the access course you are on focused on science subjects or is it just a general access course to get you up to scratch for 3rd level? Can I ask what course it is you want to do at Letterkenny after the access? I've gone for the FETAC 6 at Sligo because I feel I have a better chance of getting on it as it bridges that gap between the level 7 and FETAC 5. In year 2 of the FETAC I can specialise in Enviromental, Pharmaceutical or Biomedical and then I can apply at Sligo to get into the 3rd year of one of those degrees.

    Hi Fea,

Lovely to meet you too :). Im on the CAO but I can't find anything in relation to applying as a mature student other than nursing/midwive. You mean they might consider you without the leaving cert results even if the course requirement says you need passes at LC level in math, english and Irish and nothing about mature students?

That is what is holding me back you see plus Id really love to go to Killybegs cause thats where my wife will be next year again and il be moving up to her with our dogs. If I don't get onto that course because of LC results I see my only option as going back to do the LC again n that will take 2 years . Il be 33 when thats done then another 3 years in college 36 entering field .

At least I hope to be entering the field im interested in the wife says they won't let you fail at kilybegs there is a guy on her course who has trouble reading and writing and the tutors help him out alot. You hear of some colleges where they just let you off and if you don't pass its your tough attitude.

You need to find the college /course you want and then look at their policy as regards mature student application. If its a third level course then most of them have mature student entry which does not necessarily require a Leaving Cert.
The national courses database http://www.qualifax.ie has information on most courses in the country including entry requirements for all categories of student including mature applicants.

Yep Gareth, what Paperclip said ! check out each college, 23 = mature student so your clear there if your already in your 30's. Each course has different requirements so its best to talk to someone on the campus, I'm sure they would be only too glad to help you out. I go to WIT and they held an information night for mature students only which was really helpful and they cleared up any queries I had.

Let us know how you get on xxx

It is a general access course, covering maths, writing skills, study skills, computers- MS Office, HTML, technical workings, Business and Science. We are just getting started with the Science in the last few weeks and it's very in depth, very intensive.
The Sligo option does sound like the better option for you alright. Although, you could always apply to do the Access course in Letterkenny in case you don't get Sligo. There would be no harm in registering your interest anyway. I think it would be hugely beneficial to you, considering you don't have the Leaving Cert. You may struggle jumping straight into first year, especially doing Science, as it is quite Maths based.

Hi Hairyprincess - again thanks for posting. I think the access course is definitely a good option for me aswell. I actually went to uni many, many years ago and passed my first year with good grades but had to drop out 3 months into the second year due to financial reasons :(. But! I feel I could study at that level again - just abit rusty :D. Still got all the communication, teamwork, microsoft office, essay writting skills as well as the motivation and discipline. Oh I got a diploma in Business at 35 too. The maths doesn't seem so bad. I'm doing the leaving cert. maths (Project Maths) at the moment and once you get your head round it the maths/formula for leaving cert. physics seems OK too :). Anyway hope your enjoying your course and it helps to get you where you're trying to go. I will def. register interest for the access. How do I do this? Is it through the CAO or do I need to contact Letterkenny? Thanks again Hairyprincess.

lost everything.....job...family....health and soon to be house so felt like the end of the road is my only option...

Your story sounds all too familiar to mine, the only different was, that I had started college and in the same week, lost everything. Well, marriage within days, then everything over the next few months but the good news is, I'm now half way through second year and that means half way to my degree :D

Trust me when I say this, if I can do it, you can too.

    GO FOR IT !!!!!

Pick that course you've always wanted to do and just tell them, 'thats the one I want' and don't stop til you have it. Its your life hun, you have to put it right for you. Best of luck and give us a shout if you need cheering on or a kick up the rear end to keep you going :p (we're good like that haha)

Contact your nearest college or wherever it is has the course you want and they will tell you what you need to do.

I know here in WIT they have an open night for mature students only which is the first thing I did and I got the ball rolling from there.

    Best of Luck xxxx

It sounds awful what you've been through - but I read your post as a new beginning, not an end. Please now concentrate on yourself and really push towards the goal you want to achieve.

What about me! I'm 41 and want to go into science. At my age! I've only ever done office/retail/bar work all my life. Your a different person at different stages of your life and I woke up to the benefits of learning and all the doors it opens to you as a result quite late on in life. But - because I'm 'mature' people have made stupid comments like, 'Oh learning gets harder as you get older' and 'What's the point at your age'. 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' etc etc. Or they only focus on your school achievements and not life experience. I am going to make a go of this and yes sit with kids half my age and even if I do well I will have to compete with the kids for the jobs - and yes ageism is out there - even though it's suppose to be illegal. And - at the end of it all I might get nowhere, but at least I tried. I can't emphasise this any more - YOU ONLY HAVE 1 LIFE - don't let anyone tell you what they think you should be doing with it. Start with deciding what it is you want to do. You say cooking. So do you want be a chief? Look at what qualifications you need to achieve to do this and contact local colleges, nearest IT's to you. Work from the top - level 7 - and downwards. What do you need to get to get on that course and so on. Speak to VTOS - look at their website - They were really helpful and pointed me in the right direction. And good luck - keep posting.

    absolutely !!!! Agree 110%

Its your life, nobody else can live it for you. (Some do try, but you have to let them first.)

On another note, I'm half way to my degree, which is my goal at the moment. I'm like a child counting down the weeks lol Today, I met one of my course leaders who proceeds to tell me that I need to get my head in gear and start to focus. On what says I? thinking I'm only after getting my last lot of results from the Christmas exams and I thought I did ok in them. No, says he, you need to start concentrating on your Masters.

I'm left standing theres scatching my head. Masters??? isn't that like something only REALLY brainy do??? I'm not brainy, these kids in my class earned like 1000 points to get into this course and none of them are talking about a masters. What is that man on about? I'm still scratching my head LOL

Fair play to you TaytorKing for considering furthering your education. It's hard to get a grip on things when there is so much going on around you, I've been there so I can relate!
The one thing I will say about cheffing is you need to have a very thick skin, a kitchen is a very pressured place, you need to be able to take criticism, and be able to work independently and as a team under pressure. Also the hours are seriously unsociable.
I'm not trying to put you off, but it's important to be aware of everything with your eyes open.

was self employed for yrs so pressure isnt a problem....suppose theres different types of cooking....younger people might want to get to the top of their profession while i'll be happy to work,go home and veg....steer clear of all the crap that can go with work.....i'm caught between cooking and doin health & safety,i like H&F but not sure where that would take me......tks for the advice hairy.....
