Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It will go to either David Villa or Sneijder.

    Schweinsteiger deserves a shout too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,521 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    Robben and Ozeil impressed.

All Forlan's goals involved the ball fooling the keeper - harsh I know.

Surpised not a single Brazilian. Vittek could have been worth a nomination too for scoring four for the Slovaks. Honda was excellent as well.

    Why isn't David Beckham there?

That seems like a bit of a dig at Messi, no? Like a really sarcastic nomination.
There are no defenders at all but apart from maybe Lahm it's hard to disagree. It's a depressingly mediocre list, all things considered.

I have money on Holland to win outright and Villa for the Golden Ball since May, hopefully both come in

    Lucio?

Its a **** list. I think some players are only there based on reputation

Suarez of Uraguay should be on that list, but isn't for obvious reasons.
Robben - love the guy but shouldnt be there
Messi - played well but not well enough to be on list
Van bommell - absolute monster in midfield - should be a shoe in to win it imo

Golden ball or Golden boot ?

    Two different awards.

    Villa, Sneijder or Xavi.

IMO anyone else will make a mockery of it completely.

the likes of Fucile, Perez and Alcaraz can feel hard done by.

    as can Lahm.

yeah, he's been dead handy at sticking shoe's in this world cup.

He and Juan knocked themselves out of contention by letting wee Sneijder plant a free header, I reckon. That's the lousy thing - a keeper or defender makes a mistake and no amount of good tackling makes up for it whereas a striker can miss five sitters and get nominated on the back of a sweet volley.

I think he his "overzealous" behaviour in the last game or two probably detracted from his overall form.

Either way, and I know he goes too far, it was a welcome respite from people dropping like flies all over the place.

They seriously need to sort the football out, goals like the ones Forlan has socred this WC kind of disvalue traditional technique.

    True and a pity

    Iniesta, for monetary reasons...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,287 ✭✭✭davyjose

    Schweinsteiger would be my choice.

oh, and by the way, a lack of Muller is lol-tastic.

It would be Villa for me, regardless of whether he goes on to win the WC or the Boot,

I just think he has been exceptional, especially since he has been hanging out on the left more, and even more so considering he was playing with an unfit striking partner for most of it so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

Think Lahm deserves to be there. Hmm its between Schweinsteiger and Schneider for me

Does anyone have the list for the young player nominations?

    Mueller
    Ayew
    Dos Santos

Poor list as these things generally are.

I wouldn't have much of an argument against Xavi, Villa or Lahm winning it. Would have said Schweinsteiger before the semi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

Has to be Ozil for me. Amazing talent.

You mean the "Mueller award for best young player, also named Mueller"?

    I think Mueller's on it.

Thomas Muller would be my choice. From that list either Iniesta or Schweinsteiger.

Mods, any chance of a poll?

For me it'd be Iniesta. Superb player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,622 ✭✭✭✭CSF

    Sneijder defo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 700 ✭✭✭Prufrock

    Forlan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,979 ✭✭✭Vurnon San Benito

    More than likely Sneijder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

It'll be Sneijder or David Villa. The one who wins the final on Sunday will get it.

I think Ryan Nelson was the stand out defender at the World Cup which says a lot about the standard.

Hernandez should have made the young player shortlist instead of Dos Santos!

Christian Karembeu was one of the judges on the panel so if his judging ability is anything like his footballing ability or lack there of it explains a lot!

He was a very good footballer in his time!

    Sneijder for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭seadnamac

Before the semi I would have said Schweinsteiger all day but now I'd have to give it to Villa.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭CorkMan

Villa was top scorer at Euro 2008 yet Xavi got player of the tournament, I think the same will happen if Spain win the tournmanent,

    So? Xavi deserved it.

For his grand contribution of a match and a half...or for signing for United? Yes he got 2 goals, one offside and one against a defence with their minds on the next round.

Gyan is only there as a sympathy vote. He is a terrible player.

As already pointed out Mueller not being there is laughable and of the list I would like to see Schweinsteiger get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,014 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Imo Dirk Kuyt is the most startling omission from that list. Muller is another shocking omission. Gyan and Ozil should not be on it imo. Messi shouldn't be either.

just keep in mind villa missing a penalty...and the elbow in the face on the hounduran...

Went with Schneidjer as I think he is the single most important player to any team in this years tournament, and he has 5 goals to boot.

I would also have him up there for the Ballon D'or.

I disagree, I don't think Uruguay would have made it out of the group stages without Forlan.

Effectively it is down to Sneijder and Villa. If it wasnt for them their respective teams would not be in the final. Personally whoever plays best in the final deserves it. Thus far it really is hard to separate them and will prob come down to which team wins so really Villa will get it plus I hope he bags a goal for the Golden Boot award too.

Iniesta was class the other night but he's had a few poor games.

    Shouldn't be on that list.
