As a newbie to cycling (i.e 4 months) Im currently up to approx 40K per cycle. I do on or two hills, not too much. (Grange Hill is one if anyone is interested, left at grange cross on the back road to Killumney). Im doing it on a ****ty enough steel mountain bike as I save up to buy a road racer. But out of interest, how long would it take ye guys to cycle a route like Cantalach's?

About an hour. I am actually Fabian Cancellara.

I've never timed it. In fact, I've never done that exact route in one go - just different bits of it at different times in the context of a longer spin.

I gotta check out that hill tomorrow, I have cycled past that so mant times...

Having recently moving to the north/east side of the city This is the route I have been using to go into and out of town, nothing major but two nice climbs.

I must have cycled past the turn off for it hundreds of times but always assumed it was just a private entrance and never thought to go up there until reading this thread
Same here, but in my case I was in a car, never saw that hill tho !

I did my first Cat 1 (ahem cough) climb today, here , and its a toughie, well for me anyway (just back to cycling) and on a hybrid. I was in the small ring in front and 2nd last on the back, next to granny ring.

Killahora is a tough ba$tard of a hill. If you're to believe the gradient mapping on the website the steepest section if 16.9%. Quite short though.

It certainly is - this one - is shorter but I think it's a tiny bit steeper.

Did a loop of the two last week. My legs didn't forgive me for days.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 238 ✭✭ajk24

I'm not sure if it is considered tough but 3km for 127m gives about 4.1%. Did it 3 times this morning in preparation for the vee c
    hallenge on Sunday

I start pretty much all my rides with that hill. It certainly stands to you - I'm much stronger on drags as a result.

Timed myself and best so far is 9:28 from the Frankfield lights to the roundabout.

A friend regularly does the Kenmare - Caha pass - Healy pass circuit, and says it's a great ride, though as a novice it seems like a tough one to me. Gotta get back to West Cork soon.

It can be very foggy/misty so have LEDs flashing. But it's one of my favourite cycles and I never tire of it.

Couple of good climbs around Glounthane alright. Practically any turn off you take is good for the legs - at the old Ibis, the church, Killahora and yours - called priests hill? Came down it last weekend, fairly rough surface at speed. Less of an issue when you're grinding up it!

For anyone attempting Killahora for the first time, you go through a chicane on the way up, once out the other side you can see the road turn left up ahead, if you can make that turn you've everything done, it eases off again.

Yeah, we done this route last week, one or two short but steep climbs in cobh so added that in with Killahora and Priests hill...

The legs wont forgive you with attempting them all at once though :D

I just did it now and I can tell you it's a toughie! I started and finished from my place (Douglas Road) so the total distance was more than shown on the map, coming in at 61.65km. Anyway, in answer to your question, I did it in 2:24:34 which works out at 25.6km/h average. My GPS reported the total climbing as 1,120m.

I cycle alot of these roads on some of my trips, this one looks great. Might try it out Wed, looks great!

Just a heads-up for anyone thinking of going over mushera soon - there's about 1km of new surface (loose marbles!!?) on the Millstreet side of the summit - made for an "interesting" descent last Saturday.

    Take care!

Interesting to say the least. Tonight i faced my nemesis(didn't make it the last time heading west) and bested her... Twice. went as far millstreet and back to ballincollig. 82km. Didn't factor in a very strong head wind on the way out and got caught with fading light. Will not make that mistake again

found a new one today down around the county bounds - curragh mountain. take a left turn about a 2km before millstreet (the turn after the sign for the curragh mountain - go figure). about 6.5% avg for 4km but some real kicks included. it was a cat 1 in last years tour of ireland.

you join the cork-killarney road again at ballydaly. 5km back to millstreet and mushera again. total of 2252m ascent in 135.5km for the day.

Ballyhooley via Carrignavaar is a nice spin. Not killer climb but hilly nonetheless.

Yes thats a nice climb, leave ballyhooley heading towards glenville/carrignavar over the bridge, straight over the roundabout, you r then heading up into the nagles. To add to the above though once u have finished the climb after a few km take the 1st right which will send u back round the other side of the mountain heading towards killavullen, basically keep turning right, u will come to a very strange V in the road again go right, it gets steep here, after that u r up into the woods and seriously flying down a road/boreen to killavullen, turn left out of killavullen heading to glenville/carrig for some more climbing (but this time a lot easier).

Gordons Hill near Mayfield is very steep and very short

Church hill in glanmire is pretty steep and shortish, as is Barnavarra Hill.

Top half of Patricks hill is nasty for a very short climb (with a road on it !)
    :)

Yes there are a couple of lovely climbs around the Fermoy/Ballyhooley area. Here's one I tried the other day, I wasn't sure it was even possible, ie. it might have been just a laneway or dirt-track, but its actually a road, but a rough one (but at 10km/h it isn't too bad :o). It gets really steep towards the top, something like 10% for a kilometer.
    Route

Here's one I must try also, it has a fierce gradient though:
    Gradient
    Max grade: ~20%
    Avg grade: ~10%

Myself and AJK attempted Temple Hill yesterday. Unfortunately we met a car on the way down so had to abandon attempt. How convenient....

Yes, thats the spin down to killavullen in reverse from what I described in earlier post ! Ballyhooley-Chimneyfield(nice scenic ride)-Killavullen via poor road in Woods (effectively a big circle around and mostly up Knocknaskagh, and then back to Glenville more or less doubling back again on parallel road (ignore the detour at Cappagh which I couldnt/didnt wish to find at that stage!)

Went round up priests hill tonight and it was pretty tough, will try killahora tomorrow perhaps. Not planning to do them both together yet :D felt tougher than the nearby barnavarra hill and church hill in glanmire.

I will just looked at it on mapmyride, and it looks the same degree of difficulty as seskin hill, which I found a bit tougher than Priests.

Here is a nice enough route
    45miles 1000M climbing.
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/46636063

I think I'd do it in reverse next time though to make the most of that peak around mile 15.

Or another one in the same area but got lost
    1300M climbing
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/45617537
The climb at mile 23 is nice!

mmm you are interested eh ! Whats that in ? My recent heart attack cycling up Kilahora :D A very tough ride for me, only saving grace it wasnt too long, but long enough at that gradient ! I had to get out of the saddle for a good part of the way using 36-25. Not quite as steep as the top part of Patricks hill, but close.

    Next up, Temple Hill :)

Is it substantially worse than Patrick's hill? I've done that one on my fixie (46-17.) Discovered muscles in my lower back I never knew I had.

    I attempted Temple Hill today....

Cycled out in the wind and the rain with my thoughts focussed on making sure I didnt spend any more energy than necessary to get there.

So, came to the first ramp, straight off the main road, straight into my lowest gears (36-25), and standing up immediately. Wind was at my back though. Got round the corner and starting to breathe hard, cleared the top of the first ramp, starting to gasp. Aha, it starts to level out and a chance to catch some breath, but heh whats they I see up ahead, a bl**dy wall of tarmac rising up ! Oh dear. So start to climb steeply again, up out of the sadde. I am absolultely blowing now and pushing hard on the pedals. Get round the corner and it eases off a little, but looks like 100 yards of road to what might be the crest. Wasnt prepared for the steepness to keep going for so long. My feet feel a bit tingly like theres a bit of a shortage of good blood getting there, maybe thats just the wet socks ! Get about half way up, and...oh no...I find myself getting off the bike. This wasnt the plan. S88T. So I push the bike the rest of the way, and get back on and start cycling home back round down towards kerry pike.

I get my breath back and start to think of the excuses, too big a lunch, too many beers last night, shouldnt have tried it the day after Kilahoura..Then I think, there was wind at my back, rather than have to wait for another day, lets go and have another go right now. At this stage I am soaked to the skin and then think no lets be sensible dont want the old ticker going ballistic again. I get back to the junction next to Temple Hill and think ,f**k it, lets give it a go.

This time I go as slow as I can go, and get up the first ramp out of breath but ok..ish. Make sure to go dead slow on the flattish bit to get some semblance of strength back into the body. Still dont like the look of the wall of tarmac ahead. Here we go. One step at a time. I get round the corner and try to ignore the fact I only made it half way up the next bit last time. I know what to expect this time, and know the top is not that far. So after ignoring the pressure building in my temple, lo and behold I make it, ready to hoop and holler but cant actually get any noise out.

    Happy days :)

Much much tougher than Patricks hill, Seskin hill, and Killahoura by the way. Although its a bit difficult to be completely objective without a bike computer.

Temple Hill is just a tiny bit less steep than Patrick's Hill but it more than makes up for this by being much longer. It's only roughly half the length of Seskin but much steeper (avg ~16% vs ~11%). On the Sean Kelly Tour, I climbed Seskin seated all the way but I was standing on Temple Hill last night.

I took a detour (for a laugh!) this evening as part of a 40km spin and all I can say is wow, it's steep, and so is the other side, now they're only 500m or so but I was standing for the entire wee hill (& 'gasping for air' quite heavily also) :o

well done ! According to map my ride, the first bit from glenabo rises 410ft in 0.33 miles. Temple hill is supposedly 410ft in 0.5 miles and that was as steep as I can imagine. I shall have to cycle up to Fermoy and give your ride a go:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

A bit of advice on the climb, the surface isn't great, and there are a few dogs to be found aswell, but you will be going slow enough that they probably won't bother you :D
    Temple hill is .........
    ........very steep also !! :p
I say that because I took a detour today (on my way to Lee Valley) to check it out, and oh boy does it rise sharply. While you're up near Fermoy also check out (if you haven't done already) Richmond Hill (it looks like a 45 degree ramp!!) and also the longer climb up Strawhall.

Think I went the wrong way , turned up left following a sign for Fermoy golf club. http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/fermoy/677128484177172926 Still a very good climb though, a good training climb i would have thought. Bit of a dangerous bend on the other side descending after the gold club though, where you cant really see whether the priority is straight on or to the left. Fortunately I went left as two cars came round the bend.

Will have to come back to check out the steeper route and perhaps richmond hill as well.

Today I went up Richmond Hill/Straw hall in Fermoy,
    http://www.mapmyride.com/edit_route?r=326128674360463699
circled round via Glenarusk (nice little climb there too): http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/fermoy/207128674317686555
and then back through Fermoy over to the main climb up Glenabo (this time the second left and not the first to the golf club)
    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/ireland/-fermoy/156128674353024803

was kind of expecting worse for Glenabo. I think not as tough as Temple Hill or Killahora ;)
