Stuttgart in germany will be the first town to introduce a gun tax of E100 a year starting in 1.1.2011 .

as far as i understand the mayor has the power to do this and its per firearm .

After a quick look at the German version of boards.www.waffen-forum.de
They are already mobilising in Stuttgart to counter this.
Well frankly not surprising as Stuttgart is a Green city as is its mayor.
Not to mind the city thru mismanaged finances is broke!!
[Would this now make some sense why Gormless Gormley&Co want a directly elected mayor? So then the mayor gets some legislative power, and if he/she is Green....???]
Ever since the last shooting in Winniden the Red /Green colation in Germany has had a regular hop off gunowners on a weekly basis almost.Worse was that it was some local CDU clown who came up with this crackpot idea. The usual rubbish is being trotted out, less firearms ,less crime, blah ,blah.Trouble is;due to german gun laws this will create more black guns than actually liscensed firearms. The law abiding Germans not registering their guns you cry I hear? FACT!! There are TWICE as many illegally held firearms in Germany than legally held guns. And not by the criminal pouplation either.

When you get your liscense in Germany, you have it for life! so you can walk into any gunstore and depending on your liscense wether it is for sport shooting, you can purchase any reasonable amount [usually 10]of long or hand guns suitable to the disipline you shoot.[IE you shoot and are a registerd bench rest man,you can buy any gun revelant to benchrest, but not an IPSC pistol.]
As a hunter you can buy as many long arms of any length and mag capacity of three shots!!! and fill up your house with ammo as well. But you are only permitted TWO handguns!!
As a sport shooter you have unlimited mag capacity in your rifle or handgun.
So off you go and purchase the gun and walk out of the shop, the onous is on YOU to register and have the details of the gun enterd on your liscense by a dept of the local county council within 14 days!! Yes the sale is registerd, but there is no cross referencing..yet.
It's worse if a shooting relative dies,if the guns were black in the first place and you inherit the gun collection, the authorthies can only re register you on the previously liscensed guns of your dead relative. However the authorthies cannot confiscate the firearms either!! You can still keep them but cant fire them or use them.
So it is quite possible that Stuttgart wont make as much money as thought and push more previously legally held guns into the black market.
