    Hi folks,

I'm interested in learning computer science and programming, but I'm unable to attend a university full time at present, and all close part time (non-university HND/HNC etc) courses are unsuitable with my work hours. I only have basic high school maths (i.e. no calculus etc), but should have no problem learning. I have two questions:

    1. Is Open University okay? Are there any other decent distance learning courses?

    2. What books etc should I look at first by way of an introduction and/or to get me up to speed on the preliminaries (including the maths)?

    Cheers.

Hi, I have spoken to lecturers about distance learning courses before and they have always said that the Open University one is the only one that they would trust.
Also if you are looking for books
http://www.easy-share.com/1909089310...ley%202008.pdf is a great book, there is also a collection of free books here:

I would rate the open university, that being said I've just moved to the University of Liverpool (MSc) because their program suits my situation more. Studying with the OU means you be pretty much working on your own, if its a four year course your doing you may find it difficult to keep yourself motivated.
