Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    and when the[y] beat Ghana.

They didn't beat Ghana. It was 1-1. Penalties don't decide who wins a match, only who advances to the next round.

I reckon the top five is pretty acurate, after that the rankings are total bullsh1t. Burkina Faso made the top 50 ffs.

England in the top ten is a funny one, given how poorly they performed in the tournament.

I know yeah, well when they drew with Ghana then advanced via penalties.

So you are saying that regardless of how you got to the semi-final they shoud get over 3 times the points that Ghana got.
If they did much better in the other games they played since the rankings were last published, then yes. Also, the rankings give 2 points for a penalty shoot-out win and one for a shoot-out loss.

Are you for real? Its quite clear these two teams are very, very closely matched but one gets 254pts and the other gets only 74pts. That is ridiculous by any stretch.
You don't seem to understand how the rankings work. It's nothing to do with how far you get in the tournament, it's all about results. A win in the group stages against Mexico was worth more than beating Korea in the Group of 16 because Mexico are ranked so much higher. There's a regional multiplier that means a match involving a european team is worth more than one involving an Asian team. It's also a rolling 4-year time-period, with different weightings for periods within those 4 years, so Ghana may be losing points faster than Uruguay.

All the details are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifa_world_rankings#Current_calculation_method

If there was a 74 pt difference in the points gained I would think its fair enough but 180pts because you escaped from extra-time and won a penalty shootout? Like come on.
So you want to base the rankings on the last match played?

I like the ELO rankings alot better. They just seem more logical, or at least in that there's less WTF in their placing of teams. Also, they place Ireland higher:) Just a pity they have no bearing on the international game with regards to seeding :(.

The Faroe Islands storming up the rankings to 117th under Brian Kerr. Watch out Luxembourg!

It's like in (almost) any other sports. Exception being figure skating or stuff like that. Not gettin' any points for style, result is all that matters.
