Pub tournament brainstorm!

Ok, i'm posting this now just to gather ideas and suggestions about a pub-style tournament/session that has been mentioned for ages but can now be put into action.

I recently bought a piece of equipment that will allow for a setup where the players will play on a monitor while the rest of the drunkards watch on a projector, all while the game is direct recorded by sisko

    Here are my current thoughts:

While i will be able to book the pub across the road from me for free, i'm not yet sure if the room itself is ideal. However, the fact that it would be free to rent is ideal as this will be a fundraiser. As for the date, i'd like to do it inbetween infernos so that people from outside dublin might be able to attend without breaking the bank two weeks in a row. Also, after August 16th/17th i should officially be Dr. animaX so this will also serve as a celebration for me :D

So i'm interested in your ideas and suggestions. What night would be best, friday or saturday? What date? Can you suggest any other possible good venues? Would people be willing to travel to this and stay the night (book a hotel together)?

It would be great craic to have a good turnout for this and i'll make decisions that will maximise the turnout.

    Get HYPE!

    Good man Dr Top Tier.

Sound great, I'd be well up for it.
Saturday probably would work best, allowing for the savages that live outside of Dublin to get here, (Belfast is also a city, so the Norn lads are excluded from that slur.)

I take it you're opting for a single screen set-up for the hype?

A nominal entry fee, part of which goes to fundraising and a small portion for a prize pot, 'cos even if it's only a tiny winners prize, having cash on the line makes it much more competitive.

Why not Saturday week as a starter (24th July,) as Doc is before this date, and Inferno and SvB after this.
As it's not a loss maker, no reason to wait ages for it.

I'd be for a gentlemans kick off time around 4PM, allowing for everyone to get there and also a good hour to start boozing.

Lets all head into town[city center] afterwards like good gentlemen in search of nurse for our top tier doctor. 24 Suits, if and only if there is a plan for afterwards.

    Can't go the 24th.

    **** fighting games.

Yep, single screen setup is best for inclusive atmosphere. Might take a while to run the thing but hopefully nobody will have to bring their own sticks so we will save time by not having a lengthy change-over.

24th July might not give enough time for people to plan for it. Though i forgot about SvB, definitely don't want to clash with that. Also, i could (read should) be busy for the next couple of weeks preparing for my thesis defense so would probably like to do it after that is complete. Thats not stopping anybody else from running a similar thing in the meantime though!

Early kick-off is a good plan. People will also have to keep in mind that the alcohol will be more expensive as this is not an off-licence jobby.

Yeah I was hoping we'd do this before inferno 11, even a small one. Would be perfect to use as a test for both direct recording and commentating.

Maybe run a bigger one later after inferno 11.

    But whatever everyone wants.

Really look forward to something like this alright.

    gonna put this out there.

    How about a tag tournament.

How about a non random tag tournament?

    something different.

Only if me and Chopper get to be Team Discovery and Team Channel :pac:

An idea I had before was to do a replication of the Royal Rumble. You have random fights against people and you are knocked out if you lose 2-0. If you lose 2-1 you're saved (represents holding the top rope). Keeps going to last man standing. Could go on a bit long so perhaps limit it to three saves without a win.

    Winer stays on
    2 vs 2
    Roseball
    no blocking [just FADC]

What exactly do you mean by this?!

Sounds fun, would depend on numbers of course (run on one machine).

A 2 v 2 Terry but we get to choose our own teams. funny names etc.

There's problems with this idea- people might get left out, someone no doubt on the day will be missing a partner- but you know, just thinking something a little different and fun.

Cool. When you said "tag" tournament i thought you meant something like being able to tag your partner in after losing a fight, so that he might save the set!! I looked too deep into it

That would give me a chance to resurrect team AzzamaX

    2v2 is always good fun.

What about an old arcade style thing, winner stays on 50c to join.

There's been talk with me and some of my work colleges about organizing a tournament in one of the cinemas in town (won't mention which one... yet).

Only problem is that the venue will most definitely not be free. But if I can show that there'll be big interest for it then I might be able to pull some strings. Maybe not necessarily for this tournament, but for a similar upcoming one. 15ft Ryu anyone?

perhaps but we would need a big crowd and everyone paying a decent amount to take one go ? might not be worth it

Could this be swan cinemas by any chance? I've seen their facebook page and stuff and they seem keen to have game tournaments but they don't give much detail when it comes to capacity etc. At an event like this we might only get 20 or so people

I still haven't forgotten about this! (apologies for resurrecting another old thread!). Hoping to do something after SVB.

Thing is, i was thinking of doing something different to make a change from the usual tournament (now that infernos actually have atmosphere :p)

But of course, if people want the usual then I will do that.

Here is a tournament stipulation that i've been thinking of: we run a 16 man double elim tourny but whoever you're drawn against, you have to use their main! (People will have to explicitly state a main before entering, if it's not obvious)

Pros: would create a lot of craic and memorable moments! Rewards people who use a lot of characters. You all get to use rufus :P

Cons: tournament could be a bit uncompetitive and random. Not so fair on those who specialise in one character.

Could also have a rule whereby if you lose a match you can take a chance on a random select. This could be useful if you have absolutely no idea how to use the other persons main. Or if this is unpopular I could allow you to go back to your main if you lose a match. This means that the set has the possibility of ending on a main vs main match.

Any ideas on this?! Too silly? Would you attend if I did something like this?

Cool, my main is Dan for the record

edit: How about a team tournament?
