Not really. I think that's a case of looking back with rose tinted glasses to be honest. Season 1 was very inconsistent overall. Season 2 was better but the show only really took off towards the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 with the killing of John Boy and then the Siobhan rape/killing of Git. IMO of course.

Ah in fairness there was Hughie with his cue ball and madness:D It was more interesting IMO, S4 has been snail's pace, every episode has had about 15mins or so of decent drama.

It's a lose lose situation, If they have a fast pace they would get accused of repeating themselves, If they build a story up it's not fast pace, With the guards following their every move they can't go all guns blazing

The writers have gone a different route, If they end with a bang in this season, Then they were right to do what they have done, If not then they will need to rethink how they go about S5

It has still been great tv and edge of your seat not knowing what is going to happen

I would reckon this season ends with Nidge and Fran both getting arrested. We'll have court cases and heavy time for at least one (probably just one - Fran) of them next season. That'll take us inside the prison system. If the murder of Linda leaks, then we'll have hits ordered from inside prison.

Fran of course will be taking over the moonshine business in the Joy. His attempts to get Horticultural Studies (specialising in the growth of fungii) on the prison curriculum will be viewed with interest.

Ye reckon the boys stick to the script? op throw in their own bits?

There is definitely some improv... Remember the nightclub scene when Fran says to Siobhan's friend 'are you a ladybird or a dirtbird?'... They were Peter Coonan's (Fran) own words - according to said ladybird/dirtbird's brother

Anyone think season 4 is a bit forgettable compared to the other 3, I certainly haven't been as gripped. Can't put my finger on why, perhaps its the pace or the lack of drama.

Missing Darren more than you thought?

This is one wee flaw I'm finding. The ra (RIRA, CIRA, whatever faction Lizzie etc are meant to be in) don't hire random hitmen. In real life Wayne is either a sworn or prospective member of the IRA splinters, not a hired gun like has been shown (if I was hiring a gunman I would go better than a 16 year old who poses for FB photos and YT videos of him shooting cats with my illegally held sub machine gun). My mate knew Alan Ryan to say hello to via relatives, for a well known example- he might have taxed drug profits, but as regards actually taking the stuff, or running with the dealers, he despised the whole game. All real republicans do, if they could make such massive profits from any other racket over night they would shut the drug trade down, but they can't, so they tolerate others dealing and using products, even recreational drugs, that they have total disdain for, if they can tax it. I just don't think Nidge would recruit a kid like that.

They are meant to be against loyalists too but a story i heard from a lecturer today would suggest otherwise.

He knew a business owner up in the North and one day the IRA extorted a few grand from said business person.... "or else the place could take fire some night" so the business person felt they had no choice in the matter then to pay them.

Then a few weeks later the UVF called in looking for a few grand "or else the place could take fire some night" .

The business person told them "i cant pay you i havent a dime ive already paid the other crowd a while back". The UVF man replied "Ah thats fine.. as long as you paid one of us"

Now thats probably not exactly personnel the core groups of each organisation but i wouldnt take anyone that promotes themselves under the ira/uvf banner as exactly what they say on the tin either.

Both of them are not and never will be a legitimate army and nor do they behave like one.

I just came across this while on Youtube. Hard to believe he is Nidge Weasel. Plays the part very well.

Who was the guy nidge meet in his car about half way through episode 5. Nidge give him a chunk of change and said might have a job for him.
I don't recall the character from any previous seasons including season 4. I wonder what relevance the scene was?

He was the driver of the money van during the Tiger raid.

I really felt for JP when Hughie was in his garage looking for a go in the car!

'Can i have a spin in your car JP??'
'Ah no your ok Hughie thanks'
'What ya thanking me for!?? Can i have a spin in your car or wha?!!'

I love season 4 every bit as much as the other 3 but it is different. More cops of course, and no Darren! And Tommy is not the same Tommy for now at least! Here's a review of the 5 episodes and how they compare to other series:

Episode 1: A very good opener with lots of action and compares very favourably with the openers from series 1 and 2. However, the season 3 opener remains the best opening episode ever and perhaps one of the best Love/Hate episodes ever.

Episode 2: Usually, episode 2 can be one of the quieter ones but definitely not here. We see Fran and Noelie in a bloody fight and then Noelie attempt a hit on Fran. Along with a similarly exciting second episode from series 3, this is the best second episode of the series thus far.

Episode 3: There is always that tense, suspenseful episode in the series where there is an eerie calm before the storm. Great episode for sure (with Tommy's life in the balance with Fran and saved by Nidge's bargaining skills: the Nidge Weasel side of Nidge at his best! And a display of OTT violence from the cops on a prowler) but the honour of best 3rd episode belongs to either the series one with Hughie's treatment of the traveller Martin and Darren the hitman's initial hit!; or to series 2 where Nidge pipe bombs Fran's/Linda's place.

Episode 4: a very season 3-like episode (it compares very much in style and substance with the season 3 finale with Nidge doing a deal with Tony and the Dano/Lizzie/Wayne team chasing him and ultimately with Wayne joing Nidge, Lizzie descending in violent rage against the poor driver of the car she crashed into, and Tony wasting Dano). My favourite season 4 episode so far with plenty action and suspense. In series 3, episode 4 was one of the quieter ones and was a kind of episode 3-like building episode in series 2. In series 1, it was of course the finale. Season 4 had the best episode 4 though overall and felt like a finale and it was of sorts.

Episode 5: a good, suspenseful episode. If episode 4 had the feel of season 3 then this episode brought us back to season 2 complete with flashbacks from it and all. We get to see Linda and Darren once more too in footage from that season. Episodes 5 generally tend to be good and we recall that in season 2, this episode saw the demise of John Boy (I was a little worried that the traveller could have killed Nidge in the fight/shootout this time and cause a massive upset too!!) and in season 3, we see Nidge at boiling point and whacking Tommy. 3 great episodes.

Episode 6: The finale for season 2 was indeed a quieter affair than that of seasons 1 and 3 (both of which featured Darren getting shot at the end and plenty of suspense to get us to that place: Nidge doing deals with the IRA in season 3 and Hughie's volatile actions in season 1). Season 2's finale was really episode 5 with episode 6 putting the Luke substory to bed and setting up Nidge as gang leader and King Nidge for the next season. Episode 6 of this season will be quite like season 3 in some ways and could leave us with something like a revenge attack on Nidge's residence and the safety of his son, wife or himself in question to be revealed in the next episode.

He was the driver of the money van during the Tiger raid.

I was actually wondering about this man and also the father of the tiger kidnap family and whether they would feature again. Every character is in there for a reason I know.

If L/H gets an American version, who will they substitute in for travellers and IRA?

The US version would be very interesting in who they'd substitute:

The first and second series would focus on regular gangsters much like the first 2 Irish seasons. The third would introduce substitutes for the IRA. These could obviously be some kind of so-called 'Islamic terrorists' like al Qaeda involved in importing weapons (and/or drugs) to carry out or fund another for another 9/11 type attack. The fourth would focus on the travellers substitute which could be bikers, new age survivalist warriors, etc. Bringing the cops in would make it like 100s of other US series of course.

Of course, we have to be careful here. The above drug dealer/gangland/terrorism theme all has been already done to death in the US with series like The Wire, The Sopranos, Miami Vice, Breaking Bad, etc. not to mention all the Hollywood films.

An overlooked aspect of Love/Hate of course is the dog fighting. I know that this is very very prevalent in rural areas of Ireland bordering our cities. You would even hear it being organised in pubs and I heard people planning it 4-5 years ago without realising what it was they were planning until later when the ring that organised it was smashed.

Many of the members of such rings are often drug dealers, part of organised traveller crime gangs or ex IRA. What we get to see in Love/Hate is mild and no animal is hurt in it but one can only imagine what it is all these 30+ people in the circle are watching (if it was real life) and all the money that is being placed on the dogs.
