Just watching on realplayer about plcs, I know they're great but why do more people not seem to consider them? It's such a real option and takes loads of pressure off.

I would but there is no need as I'll do science if I don't get the points for medicine and also there is no direct route into medicine from what I'm aware from a plc.

    I'd prefer a degree tbh

It's a way to get into a degree!

So is the leaving cert though... I do think they're a good idea for people who want to get back into education and whatever but I don't really see it as an option

PLCs are handy for getting into colleges if you didn't get in after your leaving, they have good courses and that aswell but nothing I'd be too interested in so far.

They're also a good idea for people ...

... who are unsure as yet as to what they really want to do, and would like to try a "smaller bite" at something e.g. one year instead of committing to a degree

... who didn't get the points in the LC (many PLCs have linked / alternative routes into courses at college) or need to prepare specialist portfolios (e.g. art) and so on

... who are interested in areas which aren't really addressed by college courses

... who feel unready to move away to college.

For some people they are a really good option, they may not suit others.

In general, though, it's always worth being aware of all your options.

I just thought they were worth a mention seeing as they're another really valid option for most people.

    Roll on the Summer!!!
    +1 !

I agree about the PLC courses btw, I'll certainly be putting one down as my 2nd choice (do you even apply to them through the CAO?) incase I don't get enough points for my first choice, because there's only one thing that I want to do.

Ya I'm kinda going through a weird phase of NOT wanting to do medicine, my parents really want me to have a better life than they do. As to what that may be...your guess is as good as mine! So it could be PLC land for me too, give me the year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭Chuchoter

I have an English essay to write. Does 'the current political system has failed the Irish people' refer to the governments management of the crisis or the whole parish pump/opposition etc thing.

Are they both doctors? And maybe you should consider that. If it's your passion then obviously do it, but if you're just like oh, I think it might be cool, or it pays really well then you, with both of your parents being doctors, know better than anybody that you should think it through a lot!

I'm the same as you, I had been set on medicine for a good bit but now I don't know if it's worth it, it seems like such a stressful life. I'm thinking long the lines of biomedical engineering/science or radiation therapy now......

Thats weird, I've nearly been thinking the same thing to some extent. I saw a few courses at the TCD open day I'd never thought of before like biochemistry and medicinal chemistry which looked interesting and so much less stressful. The major issue is though, if you do medicine, you are a doctor. Obvious career path. If you get one of the other degrees, who knows where you end up, working for a pittance in some lab.

Yeah I see what yu mean, I haven't done much research yet on other lab courses so I'm not too sure what the career possibilites are like. I think I can see myself staying in health science though, it's really the only thing appealing to me now!

I want medicine aswel. But I've been thinking if I don't actually get it I can't actually think of anything thing else that I'd be good at/want to do. :/ Apart from male modelling... but apparently I'm not hot enough >.<
