Bob and cede are doing well. We've moved house which is why no new post. He seems to like it, South facing window and plenty of flying place, cede still stares at the wall so nothing new there. Looking out for a female goldfinch but they seem to be rare enough in ireland anyone know of any can you pm me or email at iamfromcork@gmail.com .Thanks

Cool to think that Bob has been with you for over a year now. Given how long a goldfinch can live in captivity (and in the wild in some cases), here is to many more birhdays for Bob (and CeDe of course)

Not the Best of Pictures,I'll post a better one up when she settles down. She's has taken Bob's favorite spot for sleeping and he seems to be scared of her lol. Cede couldn't care less.

oh yes, they have CoCo is the boss now. Bob is running away scared. She pecks at him and terrorizes Cede too. Bob is going bold on his head because Coco is pulling his feathers out, they're having big fights everyday. But Coco is thriving with us. She's got very lively, jumping around the cage all day, pulling stuff apart & eating non stop. When we got her she was just sitting on the perch on the same spot all day, all puffed up and sleepy, eating very little, it didn't look good at all. We give them millet and other seed sticks to pick at and lettuce/dandelion leafs for greens, birds enjoy tearing them apart more than eating lol.

and by the way CeDe went missing today... Where's is CeDe!??! oh, there she is¬



in the ensuite bathroom upstairs. naughty, naughty. we're trying to keep windows closed in the house.

Is that perch inside the cage in post #213 rigid, or bendable. Where did you get it, and what was the cost? Would it be suitable for outdoors? I have two feeder poles outside my kitchen window and it might be a nice landing area.

you can bend that perch the way you need, it's made of separate pieces with joints, you can take it apart and put it back together in different shape if needed. pity, I don't know where to get them, this one came with the cage when we bought it (2nd hand).

Hey , Bob and cede are doing well. Have a question about the female goldfinch Coco. She keeps puffing herself up and siting in the bottom of the cage or nest, found her under the press on the microwave today hiding, is she sick. Thnaks for any help

I wouldnt be as clued up as others on here, but I have to say that doesn't sound good to me. Puffing the feathers up, hiding behind things and sitting at the bottom of the cage are signs of illness. I'd get the goldfinch to the vet asap and see if anything can be done for it. If money is an issue, you could always say thats it's a wild goldfinch. Think im right in saying vets treat wild birds for free. Best of luck anyway, fingers crossed.

Sounds like she is ill. Best thing to do is keep her in the cage and in a warm location in the house. Keep the heating on. Take her to the vet that specialises in birds or small animals. Most normal vets deal with dogs, cats, rabbits, etc and don't have much experience with birds.

I don't think the vets would be that stupid. They would know from it's behavior that it wasn't a wild bird. If they found out somebody was trying to rip them off they would give the owner's a heavy bill.

I don't think it's behaviour would give it away seeing as it's puffed up and not moving much but no doubt its plumage and feet would be in better condition than a wild goldfinch which would probably be noted by the vet. I havnt looked at the videos but if it's ringed then thats obviously a givaway too. Anways, hope the bird gets better.

This has all been fascinating especially when the Goldie was fed the wrong food. Goldfinch breed later than other finches because the feed their chicks on under ripe seeds

In the spring the Goldie will hugly benefit from being fed dandelion clocks and chickweed every day. Rowan berries to nibble on in August and September will improve the blaze colour. You could try red pepper pieces in July before the moult starts. Thistles when they turn to down will be very popular.

A daily bath will help the plumage.

First i've ever heard of this mark, coco is tagged and so is cede, bob was found half dead on the ground and the aviary person told us he was to use to humans to be left into the wild,(edit)

I think folks would appreciate it if you could provide links that are valid for the Republic Of Ireland though, rather than just saying they need a license.

I know under UK law (and I think it may be similar in the ROI, but am open to correction on what it is here) that any rescued native finch that cannot be returned to the wild is exempt and Bob certainly falls under that as he was hand reared from such a young age.

Also under UK law probably the most important thing to be able to prove with any non rescue native finch that a person may have is that the bird was bred in captivity and was not taken from the wild. Normally this is proven by the closed ring put on the capivity bred bird's leg when it is young. Coco has such a ring on her.

Well it would seem that all is in order for Coco then as she is in the ROI and is a ringed bird. Did not think you were being nasty in any way though, I just thought that if you had a link for the ROI that it would explain your point a little better for folks and then they would see where you were coming from.

Sorry to say ,but Coco died today at 1 o clock. We got her a heat lamp ,she enjoyed herself for her last week but she was almost 8 years old .

Doesn't look like they miss her.Got him new finch seed mix which he seem mad about. He's taking over the nest again ,Coco was in charge ,must of been an older Bird thing ,she never took any notice of him and kept flying at him puffed up lol .Got them a new cage a few days ago , so i can just open the top and they can fly around and perch on it so they seem pretty happy.

That is sad to hear about Coco. But she lived to a good age, and was well fed and cared for during that time.

Delighted to hear Bob is going strong, and that CeDe is still there with him.

Bob's story has been one the nicest things I followed in years, and I can only offer my fondest thank you to you for saving Bob and for sharing his story on here for all to follow.

Here's to plenty more updates on Bob and CeDe.

I came into the house yesterday and notice that Bob was sitting with his head pointed in the air and there was Blood on his neck. Looks like he lost quite a bit of Blood and was shaking ,i don't think he's eaten anything since last night and he's just sleeping, lethargic, not moving or waking up without shaking, should i take him to the vet to see is there anything they can do ,he stopped bleeding but it's getting a bit worrying maybe i should try to hand feed him ? .

We got a Female goldfinch a few weeks back called her Sandie , Bob Doesn't seem to fond of her and She never Settled down always Flying like mad.

He looks he may pull through, the vet said the first 24 hours are the most important and to feed him sweetened water. he started eating eggfood later today by himself so he's doing better but he can't move very well or fly much. The next few days will tell.
