As good as the ST is, 165mph is a bit exaggerated.

as for 150mph in the Golf, thats just plain ridiculous. A 'chipped' 130bhp (I'm assuming thats TDI??) is not gonna come remotely close to 200bhp. My own car is considerably closer to 200bhp, and isnt shaped like a block, and I'd be delighted if it hit 140mph (I can't really tell cos the speedo only goes to 110mph).

Agreed considering a GTI is 200 BHP and it only does 146mph if VW can't do it I doubt he can

i would believe this done 140 mph in ould boys 130bhp passat not chipped or remapped had boot down for about 5 mins on m1, hit that going down the hill towards dunleer heading north, on the same stretch i done 150ish in 320d remapped to 185, i know clocks dont be exact but their not that far off

No its not ridiculous, my TDI Octavia 90hp was able to get up to 210 easily enough. Its definitely possible i'd say anyway, saying that I wouldn't attempt it without the correct Tyres.

I'd be more worried about the Tyres than anything at those speeds, most people have H rated tyres which are only rated to 210km/h, 10-15% above that and they can explode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Tea 1000

The Passat would have a lower drag coefficient than the Golf though, which makes a bigger difference than weight at those speeds, so I don't believe 150mph either.
However, I reckon the chances are this lad had 18" wheels on the Golf too, which would add a few mph, probably up to and over 10mph at those speeds.

Your "speedo" says 115 which in reality it's overeading.

Of course, if you filled up with rocket fuel on your way to work, were going downhill and a had a strong tailwind behind then maybe, just maybe.

I don't think anyone has posted an accurate speed then, i'm merely stating that the car can achieve that as an indicated speed as stated by one of the previous posters.

As I said i've driven it at an 'indicated 210' whatever speed you think that is you can guess away yourself ;)

if your mate was in the car with you and you driving why would the picture have an angle to the right on it , were you in a left hand drive car ? also its quite clearly light out...why are your fogs on

The quoted top speed in a standard ST is 152mph, with many reviews claiming they got 155/156mph on test drives. Add in a remap and 160mph wouldn't be too far away and it could read close to 165mph on the speedo with inaccuracies.

You'd want a big long straight* to be getting that top end though

Don't get you, your meant to turn them on when theres fog. Its a flat area around these parts, quite common around the Autumn/Winter times of the year.

In my own car, fastest I've ever driven was 175kph.
There was a genuine reason for that speed though.

I was in a friends car years ago as a passenger doing 130mph/210kph. An old 88' 735 BMW.

I just don't believe any of the claims from any of the diesel owners who are claiming such huge speeds.

Keithclancy...your picture doesnt back up anything, so not sure why you posted it. It reads 115mph. Why would you take a random picture of your speedo unless youre pushing on? Is it not that the picture you posted is the actual top speed of the car? After all, it is only 90bhp. 210km/h is about what my own car is capable of, and I have a good bit more than 90bhp.

@Draffodx, I wouldn't doubt the ST is going to be capable of 165 with a few mods, but the poster who said it, just said 'in his focus st', so im just going on the assumption that its standard. It was more the golf comment i was picking up on anyway...150mph in a 130bhp golf.

I didn't take the picture. The Indian lad who was in the car with me did. He took photos of all sorts. I assume he took the photo as he pointed out he'd never been in a car travelling at over 50 miles per hour before.

And for the record as long as you still have 250 meters visibility its still safe to drive at that speed, if theres a restriction they'll recommend it via the motorway information signs, but you still have to have your fog light on.

Christ almighty, Vans, people carriers and allsorts can travel at that speed, just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean its not possible.

    My point was:

    1. Its possible the OP was travelling at that speed as indicated by his speedo.
    2. Its not only about what the car is capable of travelling at, but at what speed the tyres are rated at.

    Jees .. boards .. Foglights .. go figure :)

Ii couldn't care less if you had fogs on, off, or pointing skywards, but come on - 250 metres visibility and you think it's safe to do 115mph? You need some serious schooling on the real world of driving in public. At 115mph you're doing almost 52 metres per second. That's less than 5 seconds to when you see as far as you can in front of you to react, brake and come to a complete stop.
No friggin wonder there was a 50 car pile-up on the M6 back on that foggy morning a year or two ago.

Hmmm ... Did do driving lessons here, depends on the level of visibility but you know how long it takes to stop, also you put your foglights on so other people can see you, it doesn't increase your visibility by much.

But enough of the foglights, I believe foglight threads are banned on this forum anyway.

And on the pic .. you weren't there, I drive 40,000 km/year on German/Dutch motorways every day, if you drive with fogs on, break rules etc you wouldn't be long on the road, either dead or off it with heavy fines.

That pic was taken back in late 2008 I believe, had it lying around from some old email pics that he sent to me.

Seriously, chill out with the comments, either send it to the cops or gtfo :)

    Regardless, My original point being:

Its possible for most VAG 1.9 and 2.0 litre TDI's to do an 'indicated' 210km/h

If you were paying a bit of attention during the lessons you might have copped on WTF fog lights are for. They are for driving in fog, not so that other people can see.

Why don't you just put your hands up and admit it was a mistake on your part instead of digging an even bigger hole with Indians, Dutch motorways and fuok knows what other excuses you have?

    Port reported bijapos.

This is hilarious .. 1 blurry pic, one poster does a CSI on it, then someone comes to the conclusion that it was daytime (even though the headlights were on) and then the angle of the photo was in such a way that it would have to be taken from the right and not the left.

I can't even fully remember that day, as it was almost 2 years ago :)

No I didn't take the photo myself, I only carry a disposable in the car and my work phone at the time didnt take pics.

Yes I normally travel at that speed, its not 'flooring it'

The section of road it would have been on was either the A40 or A57 in Germany and I can only assume the reason I would have fogs on would be because there was fog, I wouldn't use fogs if there was someone for it to affect, however I would use them for the cars coming at much faster speeds from behind as they may be travelling in excess of 250km/h.

The motorway is closed in the middle so you can't dazzle any oncoming traffic.

It baffles me this this forum is full of reverse trolls, does Gaybo have multiple logins or something ;)

    The point people are trying to make to you is this;

    You are either

    a) driving at 115mph in fog which is irresponsible and dangerous

    or

    b) you are driving where there is no fog, but you have your foglights on, which is irresponsible and dangerous.

If you have lived in Holland / Germany for any length of time you should know that especially in low lying areas, banks of thick dense fog can appear almost out of nowhere even if there is no obvious fog in the immediate area. Those fog warning signs weren't put there for fun, you know. For example, I narrowly missed a now infamous multi car pile up on the A16 near Breda that claimed 10 lives and 28 injured and when I drove through that area only 5 minutes beforehand it was as clear as a bell. They installed new state of the art fog detection and warning systems there shortly afterwards.

sorry, i didnt actually mean to lump you in with that statement. i know the effects that hill has on a car...i managed to get my old 1.3 mitsubishi mirage to a ridiculous speed on that stretch once (no idea what it was, cos it was well off the clock), but the car was not capable of aynthing near that speed in general.

They have them in alot of places now, the Belgians have the 3 teken, 90km/h rule.

The Nord/Zuid-Holland/Utrecht/Zeeland regions are much more prone to dense fog as they are quite close to the coast. Brabant/Limburg it doesn't happen that often, if there is theres an Alarm on the motorway.

We had the Noodweer alarm go off a few weeks ago , awful lot of damage, few people were killed in Germany, two of the main motorways into Germany were closed, the A57 had a pileup with a few cars, a truck and some trees, they had to close the other side of the motorway to crane everything out as they couldn't get emergency vehicles in.

Always check http://www.traphic.nl when I head off in the morning
and http://www.verkehrsinfo.de/ when I head home in the evening.

209kph on the M1 in a Passat diesel.

Could of done more too, but I felt it was fast enough. Just one look out of the side window and the thought of hitting something at that speed gave me enough of a freight to drop back to normal speed. Then after slowing down I looked out the window again and realised I'm f00ked really once I'm above 70kph

That speed was recorded on my satnav too. The speedo was reading something mad. My MPG for this speed was about 28mpg :D

I took a bigger engine diesel car up to 150kph last week. It just cruised along nicely. I reckon some of the big engine cars could do 200kph easily and in a moderately comfortable way.

215kph between Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. Felt great about it until a CLS went past me like I was in reverse!

Was on an ICE at full pelt too. Very impressive. Especially because I was having a beer that was poured from a tap at the time. Shame it was Becks though. Of all the fine brews Germany has to offer, DB chose that.
