Just noted there is an www.apdt.ie . Is this affiliated with the UK APDT. How does one join. Is there a system of checking out trainers before they join ?

The members have already been assessed and accredited by the UK APDT. :)

They (the Irish APDT) are in the process of setting up an accreditation for Irish dog trainers but the association is in its infancy - only launched at Pet Expo in Dublin earlier this month. ;-)

Just been on the UK apdt web site and note that 4 of the Irish founder members are not members of the UK apdt and strange that 4 of the other qualified UK apdt members seem to have nothing to do with the Irish apdt. Is this a closed shop:eek:

Possibly just logistics?? No point being a member of UK apdt if you are in Ireland and vice versa, I'm only guessing though :p

    Hi all,
I hope the following post helps to clarify what APDT Ireland is all about, and answers some of the questions and comments raised here.
APDT is an international organization, the original APDT having been founded in the US by Dr. Ian Dunbar in 1993. Since then, branches of APDT have been formed in many countries across the world. APDT Ireland is the newest branch, launched in July 2010. Whilst APDTs across the world support each other in sharing the same ethics in dog-friendly dog-training, each branch is independent of the others. It is not necessary to be a member of any other APDT to become a member of APDT Ireland, and all members are welcome to be members of any other APDT as well as APDT Ireland. Whilst some of our founding members belong to other branches of APDT, each has been independently assessed by an external assessor for APDT Ireland.
Our members belong to many and varied groups that share one common goal: to foster the canine/human bond through education, and to promote the use of reward-based and dog-friendly training methods.
APDT Ireland will be inviting applications for membership from September 2010 and welcomes applicants of any gender, nationality, ability, religion, and social background.
All suitable applicants will have a written and practical assessment, and success will be determined by a panel of qualified assessors.
All application procedures and assessment protocols will be made public, and will be available on our website www.apdt.ie as soon as all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed .
APDT Ireland is proud and delighted to have as our patrons internationally renowned behaviourists, trainers and authors Dr. Ian Dunbar, Andrea Arden, Kelly Gorman Dunbar and Professor Peter Neville.
APDT Ireland is committed to giving dog owners in Ireland the assurance that their APDT Ireland-certified dog trainer will practice ethical, dog-friendly dog training using positive, reward-based techniques, and are knowledgeable about scientifically supported learning theories and their practical application in the training class. Dog training should be fun for both dog and owner, and all of our members will have this ideology at heart!

    Many thanks,
    Maureen

Hi there, thanks for your interest.

All of the founding members of APDT Ireland were externally assessed by Andrea Arden; her details can be found here: http://www.apdt.ie/history.htm
Andrea is a world renowned positive dog trainer and helped to develop the first APDT in the US. Andrea will also be consulting with Ian Dunbar about our assessments.

Detail of assessment procedures will be posted on our website as soon as we begin to accept new applications: http://www.apdt.ie
