Rental out the country seems to be shot at the moment.
Is your area any different, as in are there houses up for rental for a while.

are you wondering what areas or where to look to find places to rent?
check out daft.ie and the galway advertiser for places to rent.

These are previous threads on recommendations
    http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&q=moving+to+galway+site%3Aboards.ie

If you travel a lot then close to a main road is important, Doughiska would be good in that sense but is kinda far away from the city.
My suggestion is get a map and drive around the areas and get a feel for them, then look again on daft/advertiser.

This is your chance to get to know your new city, be a tourist.
    Btw, Newcastle would probably suit.
